PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

By far the coolest announcement from the conference personally. While ill have no current need for it, I know ill end up grabbing one regardless if it makes its way to the west.

Considering that they released an US price, I figure it will hit the west.

Way to alienate us Vita owners. Shits goin on Craigslist today...

A good number of games can't be played on it. GAF "professionals" are saying it would be easy to patch those games, but nothing has been said officially yet.

Interesting idea, if it's really 720p for PS4 streaming that's not bad, I feared it would only output 544p, does that mean some other services will also be higher than Vita res?

I'm having a hard time understanding this. Lots of people are calling this a brilliant idea. Really?

There's a reason why I don't own a Vita. The number of people in the market that want console like experiences on the go is small. I want original content built around the fact that it's easily portable and accessible.

Maybe I'm not understanding the product fully, but it sounds like it's just a device to play PS Vita games on your TV. Why? I buy a portable console with the intention of playing it on the go. Games built specifically for the device with the idea that it shouldn't mimic a console experience.

This just makes me even more confused about what exactly Sony is trying to achieve with the Vita. I don't get it. At all.

Guys, remember about a month ago there was thread about the PS4 being rumoured to be 8 November 2013 because someone in the know had a schedule that said new Sony console?

What if it's this?

Can I have the same PSN account on a Vita and VitaTV and play together via ad-hoc or online?

that way my kids could get access to all my digital games for no extra cost (and of course can borrow my cards)

Are we sure it's coming to the west?

Because it seems to me this is tailored for the handheld centric Japanese market to have then play vita games on their Tv for cheap.

This thing is utterly brilliant. Absolutely just brilliant.

I personally want both options. I play my Vita constantly on the go but when I am at home I can't tell you how much I wish I could just play it on a big screen. Its a brilliant move because the cross-play initiative already shows how much consumers want to choose their experience. When I was at home I played Gucamelee or Hotline Miami on my TV. When I was out I was playing on the Vita. That plus the ability for it to effectively stream your PS4 content to another TV while its being used as a media hub elsewhere in the house is:

BRILLIANT

I bought 3 PS3's just to be able to have one in each room streaming my content. This effectively negates that.

Everytime somebody announces an Android based TV console they always seem like good ideas and then you get to launch and they just seem to get everything wrong about them so I don't buy them.

Although this isn't Android compatible (Yet?) it makes perfect sense to me! It's a shame it isn't 1080p and I'm hoping that DS4 will be made compatible by the end of the year but I'm really liking what this seems to do. Nice price too but I want to know how well it emulates PS1, NeoGeo, PC Engine games before I commit to it.

This sounds pretty cool to me. Especially to play PS4 games on a different TV in the house.

I like hte way the offering scales for different markets

- for PS4 users, it is a cheap way to get 'another' console in another room of the house
- for vita owners it is a nice way to get vita games on a TV
- for those new to Playstation it is a cheap way to get to your netflix and access tons of older PS1 and PSP games

I know it would be a little adventagious for a two story home but wouldn't a powered hdmi splitter to another tv do the same thing for a lot less? I've had that set up with my xb360/ps3 being split between a livingroom tv and projector for the longest. Only cost $20.

And some people like the option of playing their portable games on a big screen. It's why things like the Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player existed.

Wipeout isn't compatible, probably since the menus are touch only. How dumb is that?

Well fuck.... Guess that idea goes straight out the window... :(
How hard can it be for Sony to let us use PS4 controllers to play those games though since it does have a touchpad?

Sony really made a smart move here. This has the potential to sell huge, if it is marketed properly. Ouya was called a killer console just because of the price tag and it is surprising to see Sony match it. It will also bring a whole new audience to VITA and potentially increase the support that it gets.

I wonder if this will influence developers to the point of them abandoning touch screen controls on new Vita titles.

Sony makes money on the software and not the hardware, the VIta TV could mean that more people buy vita games = everybody wins

I think that this looks like a neat device and I'm probably going to own one, one question that is popping up in my head is; how do you play vita games, do you use the vita as a controller since i don't really see a convenient (or any for that matter) way to have touch input to the vita tv.

I don't understand why some of the people who wasn't interested on vita is now interested on vita tv. It's just a vita without a screen and a tv output. The real problem was neither the lineup nor the memory cards' prices then, but the portability!

I bet it's as easy as switchflipping. ;)

You can add :

- for those who don't like handheld, it's a good way to have new games
- for those who don't play much/don't have much money, it's a cheap way to have a decent amount of good games

Pretty sure you can only be logged in once per device type. (Maybe even once only, havent tried signing into my PS3 and Vita at the same time)

Do we know yet if it's possible to use the same PSN account on the Vita box and the Vita? Can I basically "cross play" my purchases? Or do I have to buy new/physical?

A lot of people here are assuming Sony will improve compatibility and add games with touchscreen controls once it gets DS4 support, but there's not any proof of that. Personally I kind of doubt it, it would work, but not very well. It will probably be pretty difficult to accurately touch specific points on the screen since the touchpad is smaller than the Vita screen and you can't see exactly what you're touching.

This + PS4 = PS4 in any room of the house.

Also Persona and what not.

You can download your games on two Vita devices at the same time so it should be possible.

And some of vitas best games aren't compatible either.

I actually think for this to succeed they need to market the media features extensively to male it "my first playstation".

UMD slot would have made it god tier, but it's obvious why they didn't include it. Plays physical Vita games though.

Why didn't they? They could've made a luxury model with the UMD slot that'd cost more. The games are already compatible so it wouldn't be a big deal to make it happen.

Bought. Fucking dope idea. Cloud save your vita game, come home, put your memory card in your Vita TV and continue playing on the couch.

Remote play your PS4 to any screen or monitor in the house

Download games on Vita TV that you wouldnt have time to play on your regular Vita (Your uncharteds, JRPGs etc)

Stream movies and music unlimited.

Pocket PS1, with PSP and PS mobile support.

So many possiblites.

Sony have got me. I can see myself fully invested in their ecosystem now. Im going to have to think long and hard about an xbox one purchase, even late in the cycle.

Couldnt give a shit about the lack of compatibility with touchscreen and back touch games as I think most of them are pretty shit anyway. Not the slightest bit interested in tearaway.

I won't buy one, but if this makes the Via more popular I'm all for it, people on a budget who want a cheap console or a apple TV, Roku media box or Ouya can get this. If this becomes a success it means more Vita support from developers.

I've been logged into my Vita and PS3 plenty of times to download PS+ content on both at the same time. You're right about only once per device type though.

But some of the best games are compatible: Persona 4, Soul Sacrifice, Lumines, Ragnarok etc.

You can bet going forward they are going to be patched up or good to go from launch.
