PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

One caveat though;

They must have real faith in their Remote Play tech for this shit. Like, unequivocal faith.

Cause if it's busted, they're busted.

Also; that Gaikai acquisition looks like the smartest goddamn thing they've ever done if the likely scenario (them putting it on this too) comes to pass.

And someone needs to buy OnLive like nowsterday.
must be like shield aka work great.

The negative people in here.. My guess is you guys already own a vita? I can see the value being slightly less If you already have something to play Vita games. Then again that would mean you own vita carts so??!

I don't know, I don't get the hate for this at all.

That's basically my point. It's a similar situation, just reversed. I don't see there being particularly less reason to make Vita games now because of this, when if anything I see this as increasing the potential audience for owners of Vita-compatible devices.

I never said there will be less reason to make less Vita games, I said there will be less reason to make less exclusive Vita games.

We will see how many new Vita exclusives are announced in the next year. If I was making a game that had to work on a TV with DS3 I would make sure it worked on a PS3 as well, thats all i'm saying.

So this thing will let me:

Play a large portion of digital PS Vita games
Play a large portion of digital PSN games that are already compatible with Vita
Play a large portion of digital PSN PSX/PS2 games that are already compatible with Vita
Play a large portion of digital PSP games that are already compatible with Vita

What PS3 games have been ported to Vita? Any chance I'll be able to play Last of Us on this one day?

I wonder if you will have to pair up the controller. Could be a pain in the ass if you can't keep your PS3/4 controller paired up to your main console and this.

I was never interested in the Vita, but with this deal, the Vita TV in an opposite boat if it all turns out as well as it sounds, I might actually purchase this. PS+ has given me cheap Vita/PSP games anyhow, so this may give me a chance to actually use that library.

I think really the Vita functionality is to get people immediately interested in the device with tech Sony currently have available.

The major selling point is the remote play.

If this thing takes off people who buy a PS4 might not be willing to shell out for another console if they have one unit in their home and able to share it with other tv's.

You might think twice about shelling about $500 for an Xbox when you can share your PS4 with every tv in your house.

That's pretty huge. Sony will not sell as much hardware, but they may stop you from thinking about another company's and they make their money on software obviously.

I think Sony is making huge steps to put themselves in the lead this next gen even making little sacrifices to do it.

A good emulation solution would be: L2+L-Stick for rear touch
and R2+R-Stick for front touch. With cursors/pointers shown on the screen of course.

I was about to type this, but you made it sound much smrter. I'm pleasantly surprised at Sony's forward thinking on the hardware. The "surprised" should of been bolded.

That's a very apt and well thought way to put it.

Is there a black one? or only white???

Also... touch controls emulated? can't we use the DS4 touch features or even the vita for the touch control?

You're starting to see Sony's strategy here - they want you to use their services and play their games but have the choice on where to play them.

At home on the TV - PS Vita TV

Away from home - PS Vita

Without your Vita?
PS Vita Phone

I see playing vita games as an extra on this thing. The major selling point is PS4 streaming and net content.

The Vita can't play PS2 games, and I would say no chance at all of it playing The Last of Us.

Hey you know what this means right? the Vita TV is the first home console to have PSO2 on it

That's nice that there's a fallback, but they should patch those games anyhow :)

I don't recall a required camera use for Uncharted? There was just the little tilt-aim thing you could do but that was just a frill...?

It has those terrible hold-the-Vita-to-a-light-source sequences.

There are other sections of the game that require the use of the Vita's special control features, which seem to be in place strictly to show off, sometimes grinding the game to a halt. Using the touch screen to do rubbings is somewhat lame, particularly because there is no skill at all too it. The same goes for the "Cleaning off old tools" minigame. The worst offender, however, is the invisible ink puzzle. At a point in the game, you find a parchment that you must hold up to a light to be able to read. This requires you to get up from what you are doing, and hold your Vita's camera up to a light to see the image. There are two reasons why this is detracting:

1. When I play games on my Vita, it's usually late at night, usually in bed. To solve this puzzle required me to get up, run to the bathroom to find a light that wouldn't disturb the wife and kids, solve the puzzle, and then run back to bed to carry on. The puzzle can't be skipped, so in the off chance you are playing Uncharted in an unpowered fallout shelter, at this point your game would be stuck, until you ran out of batteries, and then wouldn't be playing again. It just creates a totally unnecessary break in the game play, just to show off a gimmick that is displayed much better in games like Little Deviants.

2. The game GIVES you the solution. It specifically displays on screen that you need to hold up your Vita to a bright light. Where is the fun in that? I would be much more interested if I had to figure that out myself, rather than be handed a spoiler. In completing the puzzle, there was no sense of accomplishment, rather I just felt like I was jumping through Bend's hoops.

Vita TV will be probably Gaika compatible for PS3 games (Vita TV pad is already DS3)

Wow, what a perfect solution! Not.

How Sony could release a set top box console, and fail to release a controller for it which is capable of adequately playing many of the console's games, is absolutely baffling.

The point of Vita TV is getting the Vita out as cheap as possible. If it requires a specific controller to play it, it will definitely be more expensive than $100. Sony choose to sacrifice some already released games to make it affordable and I'm sure every up coming Vita games will support Vita TV.

It's an interesting idea, especially if it puts PSP games on the TV, but I don't think I'm interested in paying $100 just to play Persona 4 Golden on my TV.

Maybe if they put out a) more Vita games I actuallly want to buy that b) I can't play on my TV via PS3.

I can imagine this being something my girlfriend could be interested in. She uses Netflix and hates the process of getting it onto the TV. She doesn't own any consoles. She might like to try games some time.

The lack of any announced remote control for this is disappointing. The oversized PS3 remote works fine, but this would be a good opportunity to make something more modern.

lol, I kind of like the idea, but it also confirms my feelings about the vita (that some of its games might be more suited for a home console)

Overall I'd obviously prefer if the PS3 could just be enabled to play Vita games. $100 is cheap, but I'm not sure if its worth buying for just 2-3 games.

WTF did I just wake up to?

Wow. Really didn't see this coming. This is like Sony's Gameboy Micro. (Kind of.)

When I woke up this morning I read the first page of the thread about the new Vitas, got sad about the lack of HDMI out, went back to the main page, clicked on this thread and literally said What The Fuck.

Not sure if new but saw this as an update on the following site: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/09/09/sony-announce-a-new-console-playstation-vita-tv/

UPDATE: We’ve been sent a few more details on the system from Sony.

There will be a system software update to patch in DualShock 4 support.
It can connect to other PS Vitas via ad hoc mode.
Two DualShock 3 controllers can be paired to the system, allowing for playing PS1 titles.
PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.
Will support “nasne”, a networked recorder and media storage device

It's weird for me to see Andrew speaking japanese.

Weirder seeing him speak Japanese and then being dubbed back into English.

There's touch screen emulation support. That's enough for Wipeout.

Wrong. Menu navigation won't be a problem. It's games that require touch screen use during gameplay that will be hard to make work.

Via google translate...

There was manipulation of on-screen "touch" and "flick" in Q. PS Vita, but how do you operate the wireless controller?

Thanks for the info.
