PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I never said there will be less reason to make less Vita games, I said there will be less reason to make less exclusive Vita games.

We will see how many new Vita exclusives are announced in the next year. If I was making a game that had to work on a TV with DS3 I would make sure it worked on a PS3 as well, thats all i'm saying.

Fair enough, but even then I'd still argue there isn't any reason to expect to see less exclusive Vita games - I don't think the mindset will be so much "I have to make games that will also work on the TV with a DS3" so much as "I'm making a game that's for a primarily mobile platform that also has living room support" - unless the TVita ends up being some lightning success and becomes humongous before a DS4 bundle can come to fruition, but I frankly don't see that happening lol.

And I'd think the whole thing is more about getting developer support on the platform in general, not even just for exclusives, but just to make sure games in general have a reason to show up there. If devs can be convinced that it's worth porting stuff like mainline CoD and FIFA titles onto Vita (And I mean proper ports, not the things it's gotten in the past lol), then Sony would have a system with a really strong argument for a streaming media box + mainstream game support.

And again I fully admit this is speculation straight from fantasy land - I'm just really interested to see where Sony takes this, but it heavily depends on how they end up pitching it to consumers.

Maybe this is what the rumoured PS4/Vita bundle was about. If when they launch this they bundle it with a PS4 at the same price as the Xbox One it could do very well.

The way I see it is if this sells a crapton more than the normal Vita, future games won't really take advantage of the touch screen/ camera stuff.

Which I'm actually fine with! All of the extra bits (bar a few touch stuff) has been generally more annoying than actually useful. More gimmicky than actually useful.

I also imagine the DS4's touch pad will eventually be usable for that. Personally I can't wait! Being able to play Soul Sacrifice with a control scheme that doesn't give my hands cramp is well worth it!

I hope this encourages devs to not put those dumb camera "puzzles" in Vita games anymore.

I about threw my Vita at a wall yesterday because one of the AC puzzles wanted me to point it at a bright light and I kept doing so but apparently none of my lights were bright enough, so it kept giving me the message.

This is cool and all, but they also could have just sold an HDMI-out cable for the Vita I already own.

Still, $100 to be able to play PS4 games in my media room without moving the console. That'll do, Sony.

Not sure if new but saw this as an update on the following site: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/09/09/sony-announce-a-new-console-playstation-vita-tv/

UPDATE: We’ve been sent a few more details on the system from Sony.

There will be a system software update to patch in DualShock 4 support.
It can connect to other PS Vitas via ad hoc mode.
Two DualShock 3 controllers can be paired to the system, allowing for playing PS1 titles.
PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.
Will support “nasne”, a networked recorder and media storage device
Awesome. I want Vita.
Tho is the system update day one or later for the DuelShock 4?

Okay, so I wonder if that means that, when the Vita is connected to the Vita TV, EVERY Vita game becomes playable?

I always thought that Sony would eventually use the Vita OS on other devices. At $100, it's an interesting device.

I'm interested in seeing how it does and if it is released outside of Japan. Netflix + Remote Play + Dissidia on my TV, and Gaikai down the road makes this a more interesting set top box to me.

So this thing will let me:

Play a large portion of digital PS Vita games
Play a large portion of digital PSN games that are already compatible with Vita
Play a large portion of digital PSN PSX/PS2 games that are already compatible with Vita
Play a large portion of digital PSP games that are already compatible with Vita

What PS3 games have been ported to Vita? Any chance I'll be able to play Last of Us on this one day?

None PS3 game will be ported to Vita. But, there is Gaikai...

"The cloud gaming services will provide gamers on the PS4 and PS3 systems, followed by gamers on the PS Vita system, with immediate access to a catalog of critically acclaimed PS3 titles,"
"These games will be streamed using Gaikai’s proprietary network technology to deliver amazing gameplay that is fast and responsive."

Pretty cool device, and at the right price-point.

Don't think I would get much use out of it, but I can see some people really using this. Great for streaming PS4 to another room/TV.

When I say less, I mean there really hasn't been much recently has there. That's why I think it was worth Sony doing this.

????

I want to know if I can plug in a Blu-ray upstairs in my media room and stream it to my bedroom TV where I don't have a BD player.

At that rate, you might as well just get a Blu-Ray player for that room, dude. I'm betting simply streaming it won't be as nice as just having a player there.

Will it remote play ps4 games in HD is my question? Hmmmm

720p I thought. It's just a signal, so there's no reason why it wouldn't be able to...

Okay, so I wonder if that means that, when the Vita is connected to the Vita TV, EVERY Vita game becomes playable?

Was wondering the same thing! Guess it adds even more fragmentation perhaps, but should be no reason not to support it? Then again, why not just play on Vita and stream the image to the device instead?

Also for around the same price as an Xbox One you can a PS4 and a Vita TV that let's you play and display your PS4 on another television.

Plus with PS+ you will have a micro console that will come with a collection of games for it before you spend an extra penny.

If this has wifi it'll be the perfect solution to PS4 remote play for me. I really like my Vita but hot damn I want one of these.

I have some concerns about Sony's strategy.

- Price, ok it's 99$ but it doesn't include a DS3. If you are targeting the same people that bought the PS2 during the 2007-2011 period, you have to assume they don't own a PS3 and therefore neither a DS3.

- Price of the Value Pack (DS3 included) is about 129$, getting real close to the PS3 price. With both consoles offering some of the same services you are going to create confusion among the consumers.

- And the name, don't call it PS Vita TV, most people will think it's just a TV adaptor for the current Vita, don't make the same mistakes as nintendo.

Wrong. Wipeout 2048 won't be compatible. Can you guess why? That's right, because it requires the touchscreen. For menus. This is something people just aren't getting. If a Vita game requires the touch screen for anything then it won't be compatible. Absolutely anything. Touch is required for menu navigation in wipeout, therefore won't be playable. Just like something like Super Monkey Vita. It may not use touch for the core gameplay, but the menu navigation touch requirement alone is enough to make it not playable.

Very few retail Vita games require no sort of touch interaction. The ones that don't are indies and games that are also available on PS3. If you want to play those games on your tv then buy a PS3 for a similar price point and also have access to loads of PS3 games.

The only way something like wipeout will be playable is if they take the effort to patch it so touch is no longer required. No third party is going to do that for any existing game and Sony won't do it for many of their games. For some it's impossible even if they wanted to, like Uncharted GA. About as many retail Vita games will be patched for use with Vita TV as PS3 games that were patched to be playable on Vita via remote play. Sony might decide to do it with a couple games just so they can say it's doable and have an extra selling point. But in reality that's all it will be. A couple of games. The rest of the library on Vita TV will be indies you can already play on PS3 and PS1 games you can already play on PS3. And PSP games, but in this day and age does anybody really give a shit about playing PSP games on a big screen? A small minority at best.

you can't do that with PS3 and vita remote play, so I'd guess the same limitations would apply.

Although if you have a few blurays, it is worth considering ripping them into a format that vita would be able to stream through its video app
