PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I don't know how you can't be. Even if you aren't interested in any of the Vita components, it's a streaming box for PS4 games if you're planning on owning one.

For 499$ you get a PS4, and a remote play 'PS4' for the bed room or whatever.

But I already have remote play for whatever room I want because I have a Vita.

I wonder if it won't hurt the already poor Vita's sales. It seems like a pretty nice solution for those who want to play the few great exclusive on the system without ruining themselves (like Gravity Rush and Soul Sacrifice). I'm kind of worried about the lack of touch input, it might be less of a problem with the PS4 controller though. They can also put some shitty virtual touch input, like you hold L2 and there's a pointer that appears on the screen, which would allow you to point & click with a stick. That would be horrible, but could work for the few games that requires touch input for menus.

Vita TV and 2DS are both reactions to the changes in the handheld market. Interestingly, they both involve dropping the 'unnecessary' features in both of these devices (portability for Vita, 3D for 3DS).

In a world where Nexus 7 and iPad mini are fairly close in price to 3DS and Vita, while offering arguably more entertainment for the vast majority of people (including key handheld demographics such as children),
something had to change.

Nintendo reacted by repositioning the 2DS as a cheap, durable handheld gaming device. If they could, they would have created a modern Gameboy.

Sony realized that the market for Vita doesn't exist but the market for Apple TV/Chromecast devices is growing. This is a brilliant move, Vita TV offers a lot of entertainment value especially if you own a PS4.

The market punished Nintendo and Sony and they have learnt from their mistakes. I think it will show in the sales number.

This device and two controllers would be a great gadget for UK holidays, if it's pissing down get out the Vita Tv. should keep the kiddies entertained.

Cross-post.

Now all those who use their actual Vita to play Killzone: Mercenary online are gonna' get their asses handed to them by those using a Dualshock + monitor combo, no?

I don't get the hype here. Like at all. That being said, I already have a launch 3G vita and I think that might be why. Anyone else who already owns a vita underwhelmed?

Edit: Also, if you are impressed can you mention if you already own a Vita or not?

have a vita. curious how this all works, because this being sony, I expect many things going really wrong lol.

can't say im underwhelmed though. how can you be underwhelmed with something completely out of the left field?

What would make this device killer though is if you can just connect it to your ps4 as an expansion thing, so you can do vita stuff with all the ps4 goodies like streaming and what not.

It already has Music Unlimited for streaming, but yes, I'd imagine a big part of the success here will hinge on how well Sony gets media partners to support it with various apps.

The Vita needs at least comparable apps to the PS3 (CrunchyRoll, MLB.TV, HuluPlus, etc.).

Hulu is coming, plus of course Vita already has Video and Music Unlimited, Netflix, Youtube, etc.

I bet they will eventually adjust apps for TV format, maybe even for the launch.

Most importantly imho is that it is already DLNA compatible so you can stream via Universal Media Server to it, just like you can to your PS3.

Not sure if we are on the same page, I just meant it be cool if I didn't have to switch video sources. Control the device from the ps4 gui, as opposed to the other way around.
We probably aren't lol

Like playing Vita games on the PS4 instead of vice versa?

This could REALLY fuck up Apple's plans with Apple TV gaming

Brilliant move ... out of fucking nowhere ... yet it's so obvious in hindsight.

Damn Sony ... bravo 0_0

If I already had a vita I probably wouldn't be very interested in it. But since its only 100 dollars and I can play vita games I'm very excited. The only thing I could see that would be interesting to a vita owner would be the ability to stream your ps4 games to other tvs.

The ability to stream your ps4 games to other tvs is the only feature of this that think is enticing.... I will wait to see how well that works before getting one of these as an add on to my PS4 purchase...

It would have been great if they had a PS3 unit with this built in.

I still like and at that price it might be worth a closer look.

It has HDMI-CEC. If your TV or receiver is compatible, it should switch sources for you when you turn it on :)

This is incredible. Whoever came up with this is a genius. At $200, I had zero interest in the Vita. I've also had pretty much zero interest in the PSP. $100 and it plugs into my TV. Dang. They really know what they're doing.

I don't think that would make any sense. PS3 CPU is Core, Vita CPU is ARM.

HOLY SHIT THIS IS WHAT I WANT WILL BUY!

I like the vita games but I have no desire for a second hand held when the 3DS is sufficient for portable games. But this is exactly what I've wanted! Especially since as a PS+ subscriber I have access to so many PSV games. This is seriously incredible!

Yeah well at first any new piece of hardware is instant MUST HAVE but then once that initial wave passed over and I remember I already have a Vita and started thinking about it It really doesn't make sense for me. Only for PS4 streaming if I want it on my 2nd TV eventually.

I'll have to wait and see the final tally of which games work and which games don't because of the lack of a touch pad, but I'm definitely interested. I mostly play my handheld games at home, in the same chair where I play PC games and PS3 games, so the lack of portability doesn't matter to me. Plus it's only $100...my dream of having a dedicated Persona machine might become a reality!

As a Vita owner I'm totally stoked for this device. I can't wait to play some Vita games on the HDTV. Not replacement for the system but definitely something going in to my game room. I love it!

The extra $99 will "ruin" them? Then they shouldn't even be spending $100 on frivolous entertainment.

Did... did Sony just kill and save the Vita at the same time?

Buying the shit out of this when it comes to Europe. Please do not screw us over with prices, Sony.

I haven't posted on GAF for a week and won't be posting here for a while. I probably shouldn't even be here now because my intentions aren't all that pure.

Anyway, I'm done. My sister in law was murdered by her husband about two weeks ago and it's making me re-examine my life. I'm not leaving gaf forever (unless this post gets me banned forever)... but I need to get away from the petty squabling. I'm also sick of being the leak guy... and i'm also disgusted with myself that I enjoy being that person. I'm getting attention for shit I didn't do... I just have good friends in good places. That said, verendus sucks - he doesn't give anything specific and has been coasting off of what legit folk like myself have been posting. CBoaT is the greatest internet personality of alltime but he hasn't had a banner year and he clearly isn't a sony insider because it was logistically impossible for the PS4 to come out in October... so he was just repeating industry rumors. Not that I've never been wrong, because I have, and CBoaT is still the king. But I hate that i even care about this shit and compare myself.

Back to my break from GAF. I ain't mad atcha, I just need to not be in threads like this making posts like this. And when I do come back my days of being a leaker are over. I don't want or like the attention.
Just seen this, almost made me tear up. My deepest, deepest condolences. Besides the insider thing, I always thought you were an absolutely great poster here - and I hope we will see you again eventually. You will be missed :'(

I just don't get who this is for. A Vita for your TV that doesn't play some of the best Vita games. A PS4/Netflix streaming box for your other TVs that doesn't support 1080p.

They kinda lost a few PS4 sales from Richie Richs, but I guess it's ultimately more profitable in the long run.

Serious question: But what about my UMD PSP games? I have the PSP Component Out Cable, but will Sony ever take care of allowing me to have access to a cheap digital copies of my PSP titles I already physically own?

It would be cool if you could hook a PSP up to the Vita TV over USB to use as a 'UMD drive' to play UMD games.

Pretty interesting announcement in many ways. New vita hardware, new Sony console, new set top box, and new potential gaikai extender all in one.

I would love something like this from Nintendo that plays legacy Nintendo console and handhelds games.

Just showed this for my 15 year old:

"Oh my God, everyone will want one of these."

I am a lot older, and I can say that I want one as well. :D

I guess maybe more indies because more eyes I suppose sure. That is good. Just trying to feel out who this thing is for.

It's for someone who wants to buy an AppleTV for Netflix and Amazon streaming. Why buy an AppleTV for $100 when this one also plays a ton of games, web browsing, youtube, etc? Especially as a companion device to the portable that does the same thing.

Now I have no doubt that we will also see Apple TV's with game controllers eventually that plays your ipad games on TV. But not yet.

Too bad there is no normal audio out jack, it could have potentially replaced my Airport Express for streaming music to my sound system.

Not that im crazy about indie games, but the indie support for Vita should be insane if this takes off.

Yeah it seems like Sony is pushing a lot of indies to also release the same games to Vita as PS3/PS4. With this device, Vita support via software looks to be even greater so I approve.

I'm down for this, but not to replace my Vita. They did advise not all Vita games would be compatible. It's bullet point but shouldn't be the main draw.

Support in general should take off. Also hope that means higher caliber games at native res since devs will now need to account for larger displays than a 5" screen that masks a lot of shortcomings.

I wonder if that USB port supports wired controllers like an arcade stick. Would be nice.
I'm getting one regardless and I already own a Vita.

I was thinking the same thing. I've been dying to play some online Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX, and with a arcade stick. Pure Bliss!

Neat, but I can still play the vast majority of these titles on the PS3 I already own and presumably PS4. I'd just get a regular Vita if anything.

Though I'm still not sure how I feel about this, specially because of the proprietary memory card's prices I guess it is good to have options. It won't harm anyone, and could end up selling a few Vita games. which would be good to improve 3rd party support, so...

Nice.
