PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Why wouldn't you just move the PS4??
That sounds convenient, easy and worth doing every other day. I wonder why nobody thought of that.

Heck, maybe start up a service where people come into your house and move your consoles around when the TV is occupied. There must be some money in that.

I wonder the implications this will have on the Ouya moving forward. They're both identical in price, however the PSVita TV has the advantage of having a much stronger software lineup and a superior remote controller. Is this the final nail in the coffin for Ouya?

This is pretty sweet. Will it have Netflix and other online streaming functionality? If so sounds like the perfect cheap set top box for gaming/media.

Now this is a Vita that I would actually buy!

Pretty cool move by Sony. Who saw this coming?!

House hinted heavily at it at the February event ('something something Vita living room experience'), so some of us did.

With everyone trying to position a cheap streaming box, probably with gaming capabilities, this was a smart move which could have been forseeable.

Although it is surprising that Sony actually came through with it.

So....isn't it reasonable to assume this could support the Vita itself as a controller so you can use the touch screens and camera? In other words, play the Vita as normal but have Vita TV spit the image to your television.

If I moved my console from my living room to the bedroom, I have to reset ALL of the resolution and audio settings, and go through the hassle each time.

Can you honestly not see how just simply streaming the footage upstairs is far better? If not then this console is clearly not for you.

I honestly believe there will be a LOT of people buying this, only tyo get as Vita later on. Hopefully Sony will have woken up by then asnd stopped charging ridiculous prices for memory cards
right
.

Anyhow, getting one as soon as I can get my hands on it.

I wonder how long this thing has been in the pipeline?

Because if it's been there for a while, this explains the touchpad on the DS4 way more than anything else does...

Now you're just trolling, right?

No? I fail to see the logic behind this one function the device overall I like though.

Why on earth would you go through some weird streaming setup to another TV with a very strong possibility of network lag and compressed Video. When you could just pick up and move the PS4?

Nah... seriously, if you have a half decent signal you net about 40MBit/s over an 802.11n 1x1 connection, which is more than enough for 1080p30.
They could just implement a 720p fallback option for people with shitty reception and no possibility to use a cable.
They probably just wanted to save a few bucks on the chipset, which is fine for a device like this I guess.

I think bluray movies can go up to 54Mbps

So this is exactly what House mentioned back in Feb during the PS4 reveal.

It was something similar to "Exciting home integration"

So can this system sync with my Vita or something?

Not sure if this was posted somewhere else, but what are the chances now that the current vita gets TV Out functionality? Pretty much nil I guess since it would trod on Vita TV?
Yes, this is astually the best of both worlds. You have tiny box which plugs in as is portable while doing this with Vita would be clunky in comparison. I think they're playing this really smart by basically selling you a Vita for 100 dollars and a ton of upside with all your current PSN compatible purchases and PS4 streaming. Could create a pretty big boost to the SW viability with people not having to invest as much money in a Vita now but get the benefits of TV out plus support for anything that the PSV supports including PS1/PSP games.

Did not expect the $100 price! That is a great price for this small device.

I hope it will have DLNA support as well, then it'd be perfect.
I hope it does but you can still potentially set up something like PMS with PS4 and then stream that to Vita.

Bedroom PS4 woo woo! This is so bought. It would be bought twice over if I could get competent Internet at my cottage, would be amazing to play PS4 games up there during rainy/snowy days.

Sony would do well to make a PS4/Vita TV boxed bundle, I think it could do well if its benefits are advertised properly. 2 console for the price of one, Xbox One that is :p

Because this will stream from the PS4 it will have the Cinavia DRM. That means that it will be less useful as a media player. A GoogleTV or Roku box with Plex would have the same capabilities without the DRM if all you needed was a multimedia extender.

If the Ouya wasn't screwed before, it is now. I was definitely not interested in the Vita for $200, but $100 sounds like a much better price point for me. This sounds pretty good.

Holy shit, this could be huge. Streaming media device, plays Vita games, and effectively works as a PS4 "extender" for another room in your house.

is this going to be region locked? i want to use this with my ps4 in november and would import if the ps4 remote play function is enabled. i hope we find out soon.

Introducing the PlayStation Vita TV.

No screen.
No controls.
No touchpad.
No camera.
No microphone.
No Uncharted.
No Resistance.
No Gravity Rush.
No WipEout.
No LittleBigPlanet.
No Assassin's Creed.

It only does nothing.

Only $99.99.

Was thinking about this. Uncharted has integral parts of the game where the touch and the camera are required. I don't remember where the touch is required in AC, but I remember it was.

Still, if they get Gaikai running PS2 and PS3 emulation on this, it might be huge enough to get lots of folks to buy it and subscribe to PS Premium (new tier for PS+ for gaikai. Yes, I made it up myself.)

Like a lot of people, my TV is mounted and the power/HDMI cables are all buried in the wall. I'd much prefer to throw a $99 streaming box in my bedroom to remote play PS4 when my girlfriend wants to use our regular TV than unhook wires and lug shit around every few days.

If that were the only feature, I wouldn't buy it...but it'd be nice to have the native Vita gaming on a TV as well...
