PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

The biggest problem right now is no touch screen. Quite a few games use it for random stuff here and there. The DS4 may solve some of those problems but I imagine the touchpad will still be kinda awkward.

Still, it's a perfect PS1/PSP device. Pretty ballsy move on Sony's part. Hope it works out for them.

Maybe this will convince publishers to bother getting the rest of their PSP catalog up on PSN. That would be cool.

But that's just it; for the "regular" people, it's a $100 set top box that will stream netflix and hulu and whatever, while also offering PSX/PSP/PSV games and acting as a port for a second TV to access the PS4.

The rendering resolution is important. If it only renders at a maximum of 540p and outputs 1080i to your 60" TV, it's going to make all that streaming stuff look terrible. It will probably make the PS4 look terrible, too.

If it is capable of rendering at HD resolutions for media and PS4 mirroring, it would probably be ok.

This is a good idea but I refuse to support's Sony's insane memory card prices.

If they ever let this thing use a USB HDD or something, it'll instant purchase.

Streaming at 24 FPS yes, which is what movies are.

Would you be comfortable playing games at sub 30 FPS? It would have to lock in the 5 GHz range transmission wise to this also IMO to achieve enough bandwidth.

And 5 GHz has more wall issues in the end then 2.4 GHz, so the range would come down a little for that bandwidth.

IMO they just played it safe and kept it at 720p to make sure that everyone gets good FPS for games.

EDIT: also add in wireless having packet loss and variable latency due to RF multipathing and other effects, and it gets a lot tougher to do high rez/high fps transmissions at a significant range to be useful.

Come to think of it, I had a hard time coming up with a suitable htpc streaming solution a couple of years ago @1080p, and 2.4GHz was the reason iirc. So I guess that is the reason for no 1080p.

Looks like a great Vita-on-TV box, but won't be a very good streaming solution for me anyway.

The only reason I've held off on the Vita is because of price.

Getting this setup for 150, and all the PS+ games I have on backlog already, I can definitely get behind this.

So DualShock 4 support is being patched in for February? So if I import before then I'd have to wait to remote play? (unless remote play works with the DualShock 3 too, but I want to use dat DS4)

I thought this sounded excellent, before even thinking about the touch compatibility thing.

Only to find out they had a whole compatibility list... Skeptical to say the least.

Seems great. I am considering getting one just to play the download PSP collection I foolishly bought years ago. Also wouldn't mind getting this and a year of PS+ just to try out Gravity Rush and WipEout 2048.

I don't see either of those games in the compatibility list.

Was thinking of getting a Netflix/streaming box, and being able to play some of my PSX/PSP/Vita games on it would be pretty sweet.

Wait does this play PS vita games natively or does it just stream them?

Also why would I stream PS4 games from my TV to my TV.

It literally IS a PS Vita. Imagine a PS Vita without a screen, in a case with an HDMI output. Bam, there it is.

And well. Lets say your PS4 is set up in the living room. Vita TV is hooked up to the TV in your bedroom. At night, you simply stream your PS4 to the TV upstairs. No lugging it up and down.

Holy shit.

I say this as part of the Vita is doomed brigade, but this could honestly be a game changer.

This is a $100 home console. This is not a handheld. People love cheap consoles. Sony just needs to get games on it.

I've not counted, but I'm pretty sure there are at least over 200 games you can play on the Vita.

Only problem with using this to stream PS4 to another TV is that the video will obviously be at the Vita resolution rather than the actual PS4 resolution.

Nah... seriously, if you have a half decent signal you net about 40MBit/s over an 802.11n 1x1 connection, which is more than enough for 1080p30.
They could just implement a 720p fallback option for people with shitty reception and no possibility to use a cable.
They probably just wanted to save a few bucks on the chipset, which is fine for a device like this I guess.

Perhaps this was answered earlier, but too many pages...

How will it handle Vita games that support/require the touchpad?

DS4, I presume?

Not sure if this was posted somewhere else, but what are the chances now that the current vita gets TV Out functionality? Pretty much nil I guess since it would trod on Vita TV?

So PS4/Vita TV bundle for $499? That would be amazing.

If it comes with a DS3/4 and memory card.

Did not expect the $100 price! That is a great price for this small device.

I hope it will have DLNA support as well, then it'd be perfect.

Plays them. It's a vita without a screen and controls. It streams PS4 games. You could steam your PS4 to a second TV in a different room.

You're right. It does support all PSP/PS1 tiles you can buy on PSN right now though and a lot of PSV titles with the support expanding once DS4 support gets patched in. There is huge potential and for 100 dollars, you are basically getting a screen-less PSV with all the functions including PS4 remote play for PS4 playback in another room.

So without combing through 45 pages of posts, has it been determined if PSN Network purchased Vita games work with this? PSN Network in general has to for PSOne and PSP games, so I don't see a good reason as to why it wouldn't for Vita games as well.
You will all set as this is basically the Vita without the screen that plugs into any HDMI port.

It would be cool if this was also a multimedia style device which can play a variety of different formats.

If you can set up streaming via PMS then it should work incredibly well. Or just do that via PS4 since I'm pretty sure it will support media servers and then you can stream that to the VitaTV.
