PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

So....isn't it reasonable to assume this could support the Vita itself as a controller so you can use the touch screens and camera? In other words, play the Vita as normal but have Vita TV spit the image to your television.

Yes, this was confirmed. So hopefully any games that require touch input can be played on Vita TV using the Vita as the controller.

This totally came out of left field, goddamn. I want one, I can finally play (some) of the PS+ games I have piled up for PSV at a reasonable price. I'd like a revision (or a pre-release upgrade, after all the sheet says the specs are subject to change) that supports 1080p but it's not a big deal.

House hinted heavily at it at the February event ('something something Vita living room experience'), so some of us did.

With everyone trying to position a cheap streaming box, probably with gaming capabilities, this was a smart move which could have been forseeable.

Although it is surprising that Sony actually came through with it.
Yeah, I can say it blindsided me! It's a pretty rad device--don't see how anyone can poo poo this.

They basically opened the Vita up to a ton of people who were not interested in it.

So they basically whittled the functionality of the Vita down to that size or is it just emulating it?

Does the regular Vita have any sort of HDMI out?
I don't believe. In fact, I know Giant Bomb has problems with the capture devices they try to use to get Vita footage.

If it had HDMI out then it wouldn't be an issue.

I think if anyone said a few years back that Sony, of all companies, would be the company most prepared for a no-console future for its gaming division, I think everyone would had laughed.

A full-fledged Vita, minus buttons, screen and touch-pad.

I didnt see this pic before (full back view)

Oh wow. That's a standard 5v Jack.

I could import a Japanese unit and have no issues whatsoever.

Like a lot of people, my TV is mounted and the power/HDMI cables are all buried in the wall. I'd much prefer to throw a $99 streaming box in my bedroom to remote play PS4 when my girlfriend wants to use our regular TV than unhook wires and lug shit around every few days.

If that were the only feature, I wouldn't buy it...but it'd be nice to have the native Vita gaming on a TV as well...

Maybe I'm just in better shape than you guys... lol OH well I don't get it maybe you have a more complex setup than me also.

If I am understanding what this is, then I want it! Would be great to have if I wanted to play a quick game while in bed and the PS4 is downstairs. Would be even better if I could do remote play over the internet. Traveling just got better.

Looks interesting and will probably buy when released in the west, but would it hurt to revamp the Vita's OS design a bit? Those bubbles on a big screen and controlled via remote seem cumbersome. Will definitely snag an
Premium
OG Vita before this replaces it in retail.

So I have a question,

Do people here see value in a $100 purchase if they are getting a PS4 but already have a Vita? I'd want to hear thoughts from that group as it's where I fall.

The lack of a touchscreen makes this kind of useless to play Vita games. Just looking at the games I have for my Vita right now, pretty much everything that isn't a port requires touch controls in some fashion.

I guess being able to stream PS4 will be the real draw here, although it all depends on what the lag is like.

True. If you expect Blu-ray quality from streaming, 1080p over wireless wouldn't work I guess.

Still, it would be nice to have the option when using a cable.

Anyway, it's not a deal breaker for me. Will get this day one.

And Blu-Ray is normally 1080p/24fps (plus sometimes uncompressed audio) which makes 1080p games that more difficult IMO. If you drop the 64-QAM signal to 16-QAM at any point during the stream, it would immediately go to a "buffering signal" pause.

I agree with their limits on 720p for game streaming. Makes the user end experience much more reliable.

The 544p , or even sub 544p VITA games resolution is too low for 1080p HDTV display, it might kill user's incentive when they really see VITA TV on screen.

Sounds cool but I bet it's going to fade into obscurity faster than you can blink

I think it'll suffer the same problem as the Wii U name wherein which average consumers have no idea what it is

I.E. Wii U is not a Wii Add on and quite frankly this is going to confuse them even more then that

Probably pick one up though

Yes, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Maybe that will be in day 1 so if you have a Vita you get full compatibly and can use that as the controller by default.

Sony officially has no idea what to do with the Vita anymore
Only y trying to expand the market. I can't believe you're missing the point of this. This is a 100 dollar Vita which plays your PSN purchased PS1/PSP/PSV titles alongside streaming video via any supported app and PS4 remote streaming for PS4 games/media on this thing.

is this going to be region locked? i want to use this with my ps4 in november and would import if the ps4 remote play function is enabled. i hope we find out soon.
If the PSV isn't region locked then I don't see a reason why this would be. Unless it's DLC like it is now.

Eh seems to be piggy backing the "home entertainment" thing Microsoft is doing, not a fan....seems like a Roku Box with less channels that plays PS1 games
