PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Someone please clarify this for me. This thing is essentially a $100 Vita console, right? Pop in a game and connect to the TV and you're good to go?

Also, would I be able to buy digital Vita games from my PSN account on PS4 and simply sync it this device and play?

How does the $100 one work? How do you control the thing without a controller?

You must have a DS3. If not, better off buying the bundle pack... or a cheap DS3 anywhere really

So, whats the memory situation with this? Is it using the same Vita memory cards? Is it known yet if I can popped the memory card from my vita into the VitaTV and back again without any issues?

Its got 1GB onboard storage. Its going to use Vita memory cards.

Its my assumption that we'll be able to hotswap our cards since its literally a Vita like our OG devices. This will make Portable to Console-TV gaming so freakin nice.

I'm confused, maybe I missed something. What about front and back touch areas? Front screen can be replaced by the touchpad with a DS4 (maybe some applications of the back pad can be replaced by L3/R3) but if this things will originally come with a DS3 I don't see how that's gonna work...

You buy a controller if you don't already have one. I think it's great that they give the option to use an existing controller rather than price it higher and put one in every box.

That's why there's a compatibility list.

Yes to all, and it has it's own store (or use the web store).

Well, it's a good solution to the vita problem for one. But it also lends itself to interesting usage. It's cheap, it can be hooked up easily to any monitor or screen, and it's small enough to carry around. It's basically the perfect "bring it to work and no one will notice" device, lol.

Also, this will make it easier to stream vita games. =o

If the PSP and PS1 support is good for this when outputting to a TV, that make it absolutely perfect.

Do you think this thing will be big in Japan? Or is this more suited to the western markets?

I read that only PS1 games on the Vita TV support local multiplayer. Is that true? I'd love to see some Vita games getting local MP support, but I'm not holding my breath.

Have they stated if this can play Vita games off of Vita memory cards? I have plenty of games on my 8 Gb Vita Memory Card from PS Plus.

It'd be awesome if you could get multiple Vita TVs on the network for LAN play.

whoops - misread a bit

A two player PS1 game is shown in each video (devil dice and tekken 2)

the box supports 2 bluetooth controllers from the spec sheet

a vita can be paired to it for ad hoc multi (1P on TV, 2P on Vita)

I think Sony is going to really mess up the prospects for this product because of the following:

- Low amount of build in memory. 1gb is not enough and buying expensive proprietary mem sticks for it kinda defeats the purpose of a cheap box.

- No remote included, it could have been a good Apple TV alternative. I know for a fact that non gamers do not want to control media functions with a Dualshock. A cheap remote included would have helped here.

- DS4 should have been the standard controller for this, NOT the DS3. The DS4 lets you use many of the PSVita functions, the DS3 does not. There would be far better compatibility with Vita software.

It's a great idea with half hearted execution. It will be something hardcore gamers will eat up but will not be the mainstream hit that it could have been.

IMO they should have done the following:

- Wait a year until Gaikai is ready to stream PS1/2/3 games.

- Included a cheap remote, DS4 and at least 8gb of memory built in (+ support for standard SD cards and external HDDs)

- Work with various streaming services to get a ton of them on board for launch (like the Roku app store).

- No PSVita card slot, all digital.

- Name it PlayStation TV and market it as a box that does media streaming, PSP/PSVita/PS1/PS2/PS3 gaming and PS4 remote streaming in one box.

MS take note. This is how you add extra functionality to you gaming device for $100. You make it optional and you make it actually useful.

One thing that annoys me is that the bundle with the controller should have come with a PS4 controller. They could have improved compatibility with the touchpad.

This is a crazy idea, but it's also pretty brilliant at the same time. It's perfect for someone like me who has been building up a library of PS+ games for Vita and PSP and has been waiting for the system to get a model with HDMI out.

Honestly, I was just going to wait until Sony discontinued the Vita but now I think I might actually get this instead. It's a perfect impulse buy and might actually breath some new life into the Vita.

Here is the important thing, can I just put the memory card from my Vita and use it without all the account crap? I want to be able to play P4G on the go then use this when I get home. I want to transfer my account easily.

For people asking about Vita as Vita TV controller, here:

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/09/09/sony-announce-a-new-console-playstation-vita-tv/

It says this:

UPDATE: We’ve been sent a few more details on the system from Sony.
  1. There will be a system software update to patch in DualShock 4 support.
  2. It can connect to other PS Vitas via ad hoc mode.
  3. Two DualShock 3 controllers can be paired to the system, allowing for playing PS1 titles.
  4. PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.
  5. Will support “nasne”, a networked recorder and media storage device.

I think 4 implies exactly that. We need confirmation from someone there though... @yosp?

If I read it right (maybe in the PR) it sounds like Vita TV and Vita can adhoc remote play. Shouldn't be any reason that two Vita TVs couldn't do it either unless Sony blocks it.

Damn, perhaps I should have been downloading the vita games as part of PS+
Never thought I'd own one, so didnt feel the need

Nothing but good. I can now play something like Minecraft on the PS4/PS3/PSV/PSVTV and liekly have cross save functions. A better example might be Rogue Legacy though. That is sure to even have cross play between your Vita and PS4.

I just had this though so bare with me

Imagine if you can do cross play with Vita and PS4 games ala Guacamelee but your PS4 is in your bedroom and the PSVTV is in your living room. That's another potentially possible possibility. It's possimpible!

Cross-Play should work since it's just a PS Vita connected to a TV.

Yea. In a video that they released, they showed people playing Tekken on the same Vita TV.

This is coming out in Japan first. They won't have the PS4 until next year. Whenever it is released to the rest of the world, I anticipate a DS4 bundle.

IMO i'm glad they didn't listen to you because with all that it would cost over 200$

hope you realise this device has a better cpu and gpu than an iphone 5

Did you watch the video? Popping in a Vita game cart is the first thing they do. It supports physical games.

DS4 to be added in the future

Great to hear

This along with the PS4 is already a better deal than XBONE. You basically get "two" PS4's.

This is how you justify an extra 100. Not that Kinect bullshit MS expects people to swallow. Sony is killing it and this makes MS look that much worst with what they're offering.
