PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Could someone clarify:

Can I use this to stream games off of my Vita onto my TV or do I need to have the games installed on the Vita TV and then use the Vita as the controller?
You need the games installed on the Vita TV. So either pop the cart in or swap memory cards and play.

You can use the Vita as a controller.

I think this could dominate the low end console market. That's a pretty huge market.

This right here.

It tackles another tier of the market on a worldwide scale and between the PS1/PSP/Vita games they will also cover a large range of game prices as well.

This thing could be a huge hit for Sony if it handles it right.

Vita does not have "couch coop" experiences on it. PS1 was a console with 2 controller ports, and tons of 1 screen coop games.
I know, I know. It's just wishful thinking on my part. I love local MP, and would love to see Vita games start supporting it. The only way it will have even a remote chance of happening is if the Vita TV starts outselling the Vita itself.

People who are excited for this so they are going to be able to play PSX and PSP games on their TV. Could you tell me which games you are planning to play? I don't understand. Next gen is coming in 2 months and you are all excited to be able to play old PSX games and mediocre PSP games that have low production values (which is fine, because they are handheld games). Oh and playing VITA games on the big screen, what games exactly? BTW I have a Vita.

People are excited for this simply because it is $100. If they are already planning to get PS4, they are likely going to have PSN+, so for a extra $100 they can have access to free Vita games from PSN+ as well as being able to play PS4 on another room through streaming.

So just to be sure as I'm a little confused, I can play Vita games on this thing on my TV right? That's the only question I have. It's basically a Vita console?

yes. it can do everything vita can do (well besides camera, and touch, but there seems to be some clunky alternative).

so it can play vita, psp, psx. remote play ps4 etc.

Apple TV flatout sucks, that's why it isn't a hot ticket item. Roku kicks Apple TVs ass all over the place, and that's why just about every relative of mine under 60 has one now. Apple TV is only good for iTunes, as the media apps selection is very small (Walled Garden!) and gaming is nonexistent.

No, there's more to an Apple TV than that. Being able to push content from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac goes beyond just iTunes content or a handful of media apps. Even the handful of media apps hits a lot of the big ones that most people use.

Yeah, bit of a head scratch. iTunes is best in class for music and movies and Ouya is best in class for piracy.

I think Sony is doing well to position this as more of a gaming companion but it does have some benefits for video/music.

Yes it's a vita console

The fact that we're having so many questions about it here on GAF worries me about how the average joe consumer is going to see it

Yupppp. It creates a lower cost, more accessible console with serious media / streaming capabilities. It's great to see a product like this alongside the $300+ consoles.

Hack the PSP side of it via softmod and you could potentially have Game Boy, NES, Sega, GBA and ripped PS1 games too. No Vita piracy through softmods either. It'd be amazing.

In regards to all the praise and amazement at this being the "Ouya killer" or an "Apple TV" competitor... what ther fuck?

Even the most rabid fanbase on the planet has not turned the Apple TV into a hot ticket item. What's the point of competing with things no one cares about?

Most people can already stream movies and TV to their TVs at sub 1080p. People who care about gaming can buy the majority of Vita's titles on other devices. PS4 streaming to another TV and the limited amount of Vita exclusives (limited even more by compatability) are the only benefits I can see. A TV out would have been much better for one and Gaikai had better fucking deliver to make the other worthwhile. Promo video is great, but it is not proof of shit.

I am very interested to see Gaikai truly up and running. It needs to deliver if anyone outside of Vita fans is ever going to care about it.

price, if it is below 100€/$

I wonder if this will mean fewer touch and camera features integrated into future games. I'd be okay with that, but some will probably be disappointed.

I didn't see this as removing touch from future Vita games, basically Sony can just mandate Vita developer to always provide alternative Dualshock control scheme just like how they told PS4 developer to provite alternate Vita control scheme for remote play.

so touch will still be used, especially things like virtual button or UI menu navigation, they just have to make sure when it's played on vitaTV, the UI navigation will still work with dpad, and the Virtual button mapped for other button like L2/R2.

what this may kill though is camera functionality and rear pad, or at least it won't be a very important feature in future Vita games.

Nobody is mirroring iPhone and iPad games to an Apple TV. Unless of course you want the absolute worst setup for gaming in existence. I'd rather be punched in the face repeatedly than play Touchscreen Fifa on my TV.

When Apple makes an Apple TV that can run graphically intensive games and has a marketplace with games that all have controller support...maybe.

Fuck, I know I will probably buy this and I already own a Vita. The potential for streaming my PS4 content to it from another room is too tempting. I am worried about the image quality though.

This thing is a smart idea for sure, but should be for the western market only since Japan don't really care much about consoles/TV gaming.

Becoming hard to distinguish troll questions from legitimately dumb questions.

This is made by Sony, right? And it plays Nintendo games?

it's a new Vita hardware, hacker probably have to find another exploit to get into the psp hack side. also those softmod are still operate under psp emulation isn't it? so the performance are still really limited to dated psp spec. you can probably get smartphone that run those emulator better than psp softmod.

I was very surprised when they announced this. The idea was exciting to me at first, however after thinking about this I'm having a hard time seeing this being successful even at the $100 price point. I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony's marketing for this being a nightmare, considering they are likely going to be putting a large amount of their time and money into marketing the PS4. I fully expect this device to be launched with little fanfare and miniscule public awareness. I just can't see this being the big thing people expect it to be. I'd love some crow though.

I'm sort of tempted, I don't usually take my Vita with me places. I could see this killing off Cross Save, since now you'd be playing the same game on the same platform.

The yen cost is equivalent to £60. Will it be £60 here in the UK?

Hell fucking no! It'll be £120 minimum. We will get fucked as usual...but it's totally region free and runs on motherfucking USB power!

I'm importing that bitch faster than Jesse Pinkman can say "Bitch!"

£100 is my limit. If it goes higher that, sony can piss off

I'm not talking about games. There are a lot of apps on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac that allow AirPlay which means you have way more functionality and the ability to push content to the TV than just iTunes and the built in apps. It's downplaying what Apple TV can do.

A $99 box that plays the PS1/PSX/PSV library is just what I wanted. An impulse buy pricepoint device that can play P4G, Ys Celceta, Soul Sacrifice, Muramasa and PS+ Vita games is just awesome.

Will this get tracked by NPD and MC/Famitsu threads? I'd be interesting to see how this performs sales-wise.

What? Sony already confirmed PS3 gaikai streaming to the Vita.... so why would they not have it to the vita.... TV? It should be the exact same chipset. They already said once it comes out on the PS4 -> PS3/VITA that it may come out on other platforms...

I didn't realize it had been announced for Vita - my mistake.

PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.
Absolutely perfect, that means every single Vita game will be fully playable.

I'm definitely grabbing one of these as soon as it comes out, being able to play all my Vita games on a big screen when at home as well as not having to buy a stupidly expensive hacked system to record and stream gameplay is well worth the entry price.

I was reading the Anandtech article on this, and it mentioned the only output options were 720p and 1080i.

Assuming the 720p signal is cropping the picture slightly and then upscaling, and that for some reason the 1080 signal is interleaved only, what are the chances of this thing actually being able to put out a 540p signal? Wouldn't mind using a dedicated scaler or something flat out pixel double it.

Because that'd be way better.

Hmm, I very much like my portables portable, but it's nice to know that the games are available for such a cheap box. That's a pretty good idea on their part. Between their answer and Nintendo's, I'm not sure which played it off better, but they both got a good thing going with the 2DS and Vita box.
