It's not like those things are selling well anyway, what Sony hopes for is to get a big slice of that set top box market that chromecast and apple TV are in. They definitely will need a whole lot more apps if they want to strongly compete though. But yeah this is definitely an interesting proposition for parents who want to put a cheap all in one entertainment device in their kid's rooms.

Thanks. Now either the Europe and the US get a shit ton of Vita games that Japan doesn't, or the compatible list in Europe and the US will be pathetically small. The majority of that list is games that are only available in Japan. This really makes me worry for when this hits the rest of the world.

I'm just debating if this thing is worth it for me? I mean if all 3 answers are no then maybe but I still just might get a PS vita and PS4 but I'm just sorta on outside looking in confused.

You don't have to buy a Vita.
PS1 games aren't handheld.
There are streaming services.
You can stream any PS4.

I wonder if Vita developer can make games that support local multiplayer in future Vita games. right now it's only supported via ps1 emulator. but now that VitaTV is kind of a console that can support multiple controller, it'd be nice if it can do local multiplayer, it'd be great for fighting games, or games like Dragon's Crown where player shares a screen.

This is basically a Vita without a screen. You don't need one to use this. You can just have the box.
Jury's out on the native games, but those upscale fine on a Vita screen, and they should only roll to 720p anyway. Otherwise that'd be silly.
The apps & Remote Play are probably 720p too.
Pretty much. 'Hey kids! We have this neat gateway drug! It's reaaaaaally cheap, but you have to pay a small fee to get all these other super duper features'.

I'm mainly interested in this as a device to expand where I can remote play PS4 games, once I get that console. I can have the PS4 on my TV in the basement, and put the Vita TV on my TV in the family room.
The big differentiation here with those other devices is the games you will be able to play on VitaTV, the thing will have access to one hell of a library.

maybe they don't want some mixed messaging of you need Vita to play all Vita games on VitaTV.
it really should work, there's nothing preventing PSVita to become controller for VitaTV.

This is going to make a killing in India and (if the law changes) china and other places that are industrializing. It's currently the most powerful sub HD console as well as the cheapest. It also has free internet play and is cheap to buy. If Sony can get more deals like boarderland 2 set down, they are gonna be raking in the cash.

This is pretty cool in a very weird way.
This is how I'm looking at it, dead serious. On top of that you also get- backwards compatibility with vita games and your entire digital library, a netflix hub, a browser, etcetcetc. This thing is incredible.
If I don't use a vita I loose out of the touchscreen and touchback fun, some games may not be compatible at all. Next to the great OLED screen which makes for great looking games close too your face, that were the main selling points of a Vita.
Also: You sound like 720p on a 1080p screen in 2013 is a good thing. I don't think so.

Why would you even want to play handheld games on a tv? Serious question. I just don't get it. That's what a home console is for. Except home console games are generally better and are actually made with the tv in mind. Handheld games are best played on a handheld. To play them on a tv is just underwhelming to me. I mean there's a reason Liberty City Stories on PSP was the shit and Liberty City Stories on PS2 just felt like shit. I just don't get the appeal. I understand people getting excited over the remote play stuff of being able to stream the PS4 to a different tv. But the playing handheld games on a tv part just confuses me. I don't understand the appeal. I really hope this takes off and you get what you want out of the device, but I just don't understand what it is you're enjoying.
250GB HDDs are easily ~$30 in bulk, and even if Sony decided to charge $50 for it that's still not twice the price as you stated, nor would it be a horrible option given how expensive memory cards are.
In any case there looks to be a USB port on the back of the thing, so hopefully there will be support for a sloppy external HDD solution.

How can this thing stream full ps4 games and play a ps4 game? Does it have a standalone process on PS4 for just that? Wouldn't the Harddrive and memory still be being used?
I might not set out specifically to just play a handheld game on a TV.
But if I already have a Vita, and come back home and slump into my comfy couch, then maybe I'd find it convenient to carry on playing on the TV?

The little commercial they showed after the conference implied you could use it on any WiFi connection. Essentially the Vita and Vita TV act as a Slingbox to your PS4.

Hard drives get hot, which requires additional cooling. The size of the box means it may be entirely fanless (or nearly) and silent. It's not just a cost of components. Sony is probably expecting some return (profit) from selling memory cards (which is the main reason theres no hard drive), If they launched with a drive inside of it then they would charge a surcharge ($30-50 profit) more to make up for the lack of a memory card sale.

Maybe. They just made $100 from me. It'll go nicely next to my ps4 in my bedroom. Maybe I'll get another one to go with the PS4 in the living room.

I'm happy with everything that went down at this conference. I think being able to stream your PS4 on another TV in your home is awesome and being able to play Vita on your TV is neat.
And I also was one of those people that didn't realize remote play worked outside of your home network, so now eventually I'll get a Vita too. (Probably when I go on an extended trip, that way I don't have to take my console with me if I want to play console games.)
But there's one more feature some people are mentioning that Sony didn't mention. Some have said PS Vita TV could remote play your PS4 anywhere, even outside of your house just like the Vita does with PS4. Is that true too? Because if so, that's awesome. I would love to be able to show some family or friends how the PS4 works on their big TV without having to unplug my console and take it with me to their place.
