PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Apparently it's 1080i 720p 480p.

Can you stream from the PS4 anywhere as long as you have a TV? I'd imagine it would work just like Vita PS4 remote play. I can picture taking it over to a friends house who doesn't have a PS4 and showing him some games.

It works across the internet. The better the connection, the better the quality. I wouldn't expect it to work outstanding outside of your local network though. I did a lot of mundane things like buying things from the store which were very convenient when I wasn't home.

soul sacrifice is getting a patch

I see alot of games getting Vita TV compatibility patches...

Uncharted and Gravity Rush included.

Still in awe on how awesome this is... Lol I don't know why...

I think its because the gaming gods have shined divine light on Vita....

We WILL get support.

We WILL see another day.

We WILL enjoy life.

I'll almost certainly pick this up. $99 bucks? There's no reason not to.

This is the smartest thing Sony has done in a loooooooooooong time, if you ask me.

Yep, Its Sony.Thats the main difference ;) I mean, isnt a game console a game console? at least thats what lots of people said.
Being serious, i think Vita TV is ok, but why someone would like to have two mobile devices? I mean, i have an smartphone (which is by far more powerful than this device and has much more available services).

Totally different, VitaTV is basically a console version of Vita with the same focus on games.

I think another thing people are overlooking is that this device is STILL portable. You could put this thing in your pocket and take it to a friends house.......

Don't forget we're talking Vita games, PSP games, AND PS1 games....

For around 100 bucks...

That stupid value.... a stupid amount of value...

This is great! I was trying to decide whether I wanted my PS4 in my bedroom or the living room, but now I will be able to have the PS4 on the big screen and then walk into my bed room and keep playing on my monitor.

Pretty genius.

Exactly, brilliant move by sony

You cannot compare the two systems. If 1080p videos was your main concern this system was never really for you in the first place

Yep. This is first and foremost, a gaming console. Netflix and others is an extra.

Not going to use it's gaming features? It's not for you.

I dont think US/EU customers will buy this without at least 4GB bundled memcard. Sony needs to offer that for $100€, and it will sell like hotcakes.

I was gobsmacked at the announcement. I looked over at my stack of physical Vita games, my PS+ Vita games and the idea of a 64GB VitaTV hooked to my bedroom TV sent me over the edge. Bravo Sony, you have my $ and support.

I still dont understand the target audience for this device.
Technically speaking, a Samsung S4 or an IPhone 5 (or any other modern smartphone) is way much powerful, and has access to major services such as Netflix, Spotify, Xbox music, etc. VitaTV has access to games, but the Android/iOS catalog is way bigger, so if thats the case, Ouya makes more sense.
So IMHO, VitaTV looks like a device in the middle of an smartphone, a streaming device (like chromecast / other top boxes), and a handheld console.
The thing is: all of this devices are better on that specific features. 3DS is better for gaming, my phone already has streaming. Why i would be interested on VitaTV?

Do people honestly expect to be able to play PS4 games beamed from another room on this thing? Maybe if your whole house is built out of plaster, but one concrete wall and this all falls apart.

I am just having a really hard time thinking this thing is a good idea. Splintering the market for interfaces (some people will have touchscreens, some won't), blowing up HUDs and screen scopes from 4 inch ones to 50 inches as if designing for screen size wasn't a concept, nerfing any social/portable functionality, remote play that just can't possibly work in any reliable kind of way... and isn't this just like re-releasing the PS2 except with only Vita software on it? "A third console to put on your TV, with worse graphics, and fewer games!" If people treat it like a console, why would they ever want games released on it instead of on the PS3 or 4? What is the Vita advantage?

I really just don't get it.

This looks interesting for me. I have owned a PSP in the past, but i have never had the time to play with it, so i ended up gifting it to my sister. Now, it doesn't mean i am not interested in games released for both PSP and Vita, it's just that i'm more of a console gamer, so giving me a way to play those portable titles on my TV is a proposition that actually interests me. Also, due to being a PS Plus member, i have amassed a quite amount of free portable games for which i don't have the means to play them.

Yeah, I personally love this idea for the "console game lover" aspect as well. Instead of being restricted to portable, I can actually dig into my Digital PSP and PS1 game library directly on the TV now.

And I'll actually be able to share the big RPG experiences with friends and family too, rather than needing to buy a PC release (such as with Legend of Heroes TiTS Chapters, or Ys 7/Celceta), or lament the lack of equal quality releases on console (Like with Persona 4 Golden) as an added bonus.

The fact it'll act as a 2nd Vita for Ad-Hoc Play is also fantastic. Sure you'll need 2 copies of the game, but it's cheaper than buying a 2nd Vita, and when it comes to software, not much more expensive than just buying 1 console game, anyway.

I won't be getting a PS4 on release, but the fact it'll work with that down the line too, is wonderful to hear. Being able to offload gameplay to another TV without moving the system is a nice feature, like a buffed up version of getting to play offscreen play on Wii U. Should really be a great feature for families.

I wouldn't have asked for this, but I love the possibilities. It's like another refresh to a growing digital Sony Games library. All those random Atlus PSP RPGs I've picked up on sale get a new reason to exist, without having to buy some antiquated old PSP w/TV out (I have the original PSP version, never wanted to buy the updates...), that doesn't even recognize the modern account system properly. And to get to play the coming Class of Heroes releases by Gaijnworks, or the odd stuff like Carnage Heart EX or Generations of Chaos on the big screen, along with Native Vita title support too... It's just a great little bonus!

It uses your local LAN... So it doesn't have to be direct Wifi from the PS4 to Vita(TV), it can just use your Wifi network in your house for all of it. As long as it's 802.11n, you should be good to go.

Because the 3ds doesn't have TV play, and you can't leave you phone hooked to your Tv in the guest room for others, nor are it's games optimized for physical controls or a TV screen.

Vita has a great catalog of games so far, and being able to play three generations of games, and stream stuff from the ps4, and stream video, for $99? That's a steal.

The reason people got irritated at the TV TV TV stuff is because it was literally the first thing that they trotted out when they revealed the Xbox One. It felt a lot like that was the main thing they were focusing on.

This literally has nothing to do with that. It'll have the streaming apps and such, but the main hook is a low cost device that can play some older games, some Vita games, stream apps, and do PS4 Remote Play.

You're comparing two situations that aren't the same.

And I'm pretty sure the Vita's hardware is still top flight compared to smartphones, at least to the best of my knowledge. TOP MEN would be able to explain better than I.

" It felt a lot like that was the main thing they were focusing on."
VitaTV "main thing" is... TV, isnt it?

"main hook is a low cost device that can play some older games, some Vita games, stream apps, and do PS4 Remote Play."

Chromecast has a lower price / Vita games cannot be compared to Android/iOS catalog / I already have streaming on my Smart TV, my 360, and my PC/ PS4 remote play? Vita does a better job on that, and its a niche market right now

Thats why i dont see a clear market for this console. If i want streaming, i go with chromecast. Gaming? My smartphone, or a 3DS if i want hardcore catalog

Is anybody worried by the fact that touchscreen Vita games won't work on this??

I don't have many Vita games but they all have some sort of touchscreen interface at some stage,

Right, so it's not for you, there are plenty of reasons for other people to buy it still.

I feel like there will still be some notable lag inherent in something like that, but it would certainly be interesting to be proven wrong.

You can play 3DS and Android games on your TV? With physical controls? Hassle-free?

Because as far as I know, you can't.

Right, so it's not for you, there are plenty of reasons for other people buy it still.

He also doesn't seem to understand that having all of this in one device may be more attractive then a hodgepodge mix if devices that do a bit of this and a bit of that, all with separate ecosystems.

So I don't need a PS Vita to play Vita games if I have this device right? Just connect to TV, pop in the Vita game and i'm good? If so, thats great!

Is anybody worried by the fact that touchscreen Vita games won't work on this??

I don't have many Vita games but they all have some sort of touchscreen interface at some stage,

Dual-Shock 4 and a patches for the games. That's the only option I can see. Maybe "press button to do this touch gesture" functionality?

I feel like there will still be some notable lag inherent in something like that, but it would certainly be interesting to be proven wrong.

The Wii-U uses Wifi to beam to the gamepad, and that's pretty much lag-free. Going through your local network shouldn't be that much different. But yeah, cautiously optimistic.

Sorry if this has been answered, big thread here.

Will current Vita owners be able to play their games on a TV? Or is the VITA-2000 going to have an HDMI port?

He also doesn't seem to understand that having all of this in one device may be more attractive then a hodgepodge mix if devices that do a bit of this and a bit of that, all with separate ecosystems.

Yeah, it's a tiny cheap portable device that links up the various playstation systems, just that by itself is very inviting.

I think another thing people are overlooking is that this device is STILL portable. You could put this thing in your pocket and take it to a friends house.......

Seriously, this thing is coming with me on every long vacation, too. Hell, I'm probably going to buy an extra one for my parents' place, so when my brother or I visit them over holidays, we're set.

Technically speaking, a Samsung S4 or an IPhone 5 (or any other modern smartphone) is way much powerful,
Not at running video games.

and has access to major services such as Netflix,
Vita has Netflix.
Spotify, Xbox music, etc.
Music Unlimited is Sony's own answer to Spotify and Xbox Music, superior to both thanks to the fact that Sony is actually a major music publisher.

VitaTV has access to games, but the Android/iOS catalog is way bigger, so if thats the case, Ouya makes more sense.
Way more shitty Android/iOS games with shitty controls. VitaTV has high quality Vita, PSP, PS1, and PSN titles with high quality controls. In short, gaming ghetto v. VitaTV.

So IMHO, VitaTV looks like a device in the middle of an smartphone, a streaming device (like chromecast / other top boxes), and a handheld console.
Well, gaming first, streaming device second, but yes.

The thing is: all of this devices are better on that specific features. 3DS is better for gaming,
Only if you like Nintendo games. The Vita library stands with the 3DS quite admirably across the board otherwise (same number of 75+ games on Metacritic for example, despite Vita games getting hit with a greater "handheld" stigma than 3DS releases).

my phone already has streaming. Why i would be interested on VitaTV?
Didn't realize your phone was always connected to your TV, had a controller, and could remote play PS4 games.

There is a difference between not understanding a product and intentionally being obtuse. You're clearly being the later.

For some reason, many of the people in this thread who are saying it's not for them (which obviously is fine) are also saying they don't understand why anyone would want one.
