NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I just want a release date. I've been checking the store every day!

I saw someone talking about it the other day, but I guess they were EU region?

I would get a cart for Recca if it didn't cost 10 times what Crisis did :( Gimmick! is probably going to be the one real expensive cart I snag.

I'm just glad Crisis isnt that expensive. Going to get the VC Recca just to play it, but the soundtrack seems like it would get stale after awhile :/

in general most are pretty open to it...although if you're getting repros of stuff not released here otherwise i think it's easier for some than if it's just stupid-expensive shit.

personally, i don't care either way, just happy to see people play these games. go nuts.

Well I don't mean morally, I'm talking about what will/won't get you banned.

GAF has rules against condoning piracy, and I imagine repros could easily fall into that category.

i talked to stumps about this a while back, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. honestly, we're talking about a number of dead IP's that developers won't see the $ anyway, unless you purchase it directly from virtual console (and even then, a number of these teams are long gone). i'd have to look up the specifics, but i recall him being clear that they're okay to talk about, i wanna say a few on here have sold some in B/S/T but again even if you're worried, if it's stuff that wasn't ever sold in your region i think most people aren't gonna give you a hard time..you're more likely to catch grief from people who don't like carts being repgorammed, but i say nuts to them! haha

True, but GAF's admins are pretty darn common sense about their policies.

I remember when GBA and DS flash carts were prolific. Saying "I have an EZ-Flash" wouldn't get you banned, but providing links to the vendors or posting/asking about ROMs would get them on you in seconds. As would asking how to put ROMs onto such a device. I saw that happen a few times.

I imagine it's the same way with repros, since after all, they do exist and are part of the fandom now.

"I have a reproduction cart of Mr. Gimmick" won't get you banned.
"I'm selling 50 reproduction copies of Mr. Gimmick" probably will.
"I can't believe Timewalk made a repro of Duck Tales" won't. There's basically a thread about it.
"I bought this super sweet repro of Flintstones 2 at http://notarealsite.com" will throw up alarms.

We've already had mentions of the Earthbound die cut cartridge from Rose Colored Gaming in this thread.

Also, don't copy that floppy.

Bang bang!!

playing wild gunman with one of those would be pretty fun
You use your hands? That's a baby's toy!

Actually, this reminded me to check ebay, and there's a couple on sale in great condition.

Bought a Famicom a few months back, but never bothered to hook it up because I was busy with family stuff. Hooked it up yesterday, and it turns out it's busted. I'm not too peeved, since I didn't pay much for it. But, since I'll have some disposable income coming my way pretty soon, I figure now's as good a time as any to pick up an AV Famicom. (I'd get the US top loader, but RF only's kind of a turn off) I just have a few questions, though:

- Does it work well with games with special chips? (Like Akumajou Densetsu's VRC6 Chip)

- Is it region locked? Which pin converter would I need?

- Is it reliable/prone to failure?

- Is it compatible with the Disc System? I plan on getting one of those somewhere down the line, too.

I have an AV Famicom and I've had no issues with Akumajou Densetsu or Contra which both have unique chips. I love mine and Famicom carts are so fun.

I almost forgot, I found Ninja Gaiden at a flea market over the weekend. Now, I'm only missing part III to complete the trilogy, but considering the brutal changes to the American version, I'm half considering the Famicom import, lol.

AV Famicom works perfect with the games that have audio upgrades. It is not region-locked but due to the cart slot pinout you will need any old convertor that goes from 72-to-60 to play NES games on it. There was an Ebay seller a few months ago blowing them out at like $10. It is just as reliable as the US top loader but with cleaner video. It is totally compatible with the FDS because the original Famicom was top loading and the AV Fami was designed with a flatter top with it the RAM/adapter in mind.

I was missing III on Famicom for the longest time, it was always overpriced. :( I was crazy enough to get 1-3 on both NES and FC though, I don't know why *lol*

Apologies for breaking etiquette and posting twice in succession, but I wanted to share a picture of my new precious: Crisis Force converted from Famicom to NES with custom box and label.

crisisforce10small.jpg

Sadly, a Gyromite board had to be orphaned to make this possible. For those that don't know, this is absolutely not a reproduction. It's currently not possible to create a reproduction of Crisis Force for the NES since Konami used a one-off mapper for the game.

I know I already quoted this before, but you inspired me to order my own Famicom copy of Crisis Force and Gyromite donor cart. My only question is where did you get that label? Did you find it online somewhere or did you design it yourself?

It is a delicious label, isn't it? As it turns out, Joe at The NES Dump made his own conversion way back when and that's the label he used. I just sent my cart to him and he affixed it for me. Full disclosure: I also bought a couple of hacks on cart from him, so it was more of a minor addition to an order.

BTW, the screw hole in the Crisis Force cart won't line up with the post in the NES shell unless you cram it hard into the board; and even then only if your Gyromite board is "undersized." I didn't want to risk it, so I just sanded the post down and didn't put back the middle screw.

Well, finally took the plunge. Got a 72 to 60 pin adapter to go along with it.

The AV Famicom mixes the expansion audio rather loud, so on Akumajou Densetsu the extra audio channels kinda drown out sound effects, as well as the other music channels.

Huh, that's unfortunate. I guess it's better than completely scrambled audio.

So I just bought Rockman 4 (New) from Amazon via a seller that just launched called D&H Japan for $21.80 shipped. Three possibilities can come from this:

A.) Its a lucky buy like when I got Super Aleste, and comes in original box with book + cartridge in excellent shape.

B.) They mistakenly listed it as new, and I just get a decent looking but used cart.

C.) I get some sort of bootleg cartridge.

EDIT:

B.) looks likely since he just sent me this message:

I am sorry very much. It is the product which had you order it, but becomes the used goods.
It is an indication error of the system. I prepare for the shipment, but cancellation, the repayment is possible, too. I am very sorry. How shall I do it?

It seems like a good price though, compared to what you'd have to pay for a good looking NA version, so told him as long as its authentic...go ahead and ship.

So the other night I go hunting for the fanny pack (lolol) in which I used to keep my GBA SP. I go in to our spare closet and pull a box from the top with assorted gaming gear. I found a PS2 slim, a Tekken Hori stick, a bunch of wires and cables, and then I spotted an NES game in a black dust protector. I pulled it out and what did I see? This gem:

I screamed out because I couldn't believe it. I can't even remember purchasing the game. I think that I bought it a few years back at a flea market before I realized the rarity of some NES games. If it was the time I was thinking of, I think I bought it, Duck Tales 1 (that wound up being busted and the base of the board looked scratched), Rescue Rangers, and a Game Genie for $5 a pop.

I've been buying a lot of NES, SNES, and N64 games locally lately. Living in a small town, I've gotten some deals. I might post my collections this evening if I can remember to do it.

Damn, nice find. I think my copy of DuckTales 2 might be in a box in my parents' house somewhere.

Stopped at a local mom & pop shop to pick up some PS3 games, and they had this for $9, so I picked it up.

Out of all of Capcom's licensed stuff, this, Little Mermaid, and Adventures in the Magic Kingdom are the games I've had the least amount of exposure to.

Of course, my AV Famicom won't be showing up 'til next week...

Its always cool to hear stories about how people obtained / recover some of the rarer NES games. Always involves getting them for pretty cheap or even in a trade, and not thinking much of the game until later.

And yes Little Nemo is pretty fun and has a cool soundtrack. The house of toys train level especially.

Nemo takes a little getting used to, since you've gotta use candy on the right monsters at the right time.

Kinda makes me want to start it up. Havent given it a good runthrough in awhile.

Little Nemo is a fantastic game, I like the whole 'change into animals' gimmick... and yes it can be quite hard in some parts (the train level, or the sprawling house level). Large level designs with a bunch of secrets, transforming into different animals with their own skills and weaknesses that almost brings a puzzle-like element into the level design, and great aesthetics. Definitely one of the best NES games.

Little Mermaid is very easy, but it plays well. It's worth trying but not as memorable as DuckTales/Rescue Rangers/Little Nemo.

Magic Kingdom, avoid that. It's frustrating, has way too many gimmicks, and is clunky. The worst Capcom Disney game (yeah even worse than Mickey Mousecapade)

Awesome impressions. Can't wait to give it a try.

In all honesty, if I get Magic Kingdom, it'll probably be for completionist's sake, more than anything, heh. I've always heard Little Mermaid was a short, but fun romp and both seem relatively inexpensive, so I might pick them up.

What I really want to pick up is Gargoyle's Quest II. The last thing I need is for that to start hitting Demon's Crest level prices.

Magic Kingdom is one the rare NES Capcom games I have ever unloaded. Clunky it is indeed.

To be fair though, Mickey Mousecapade was only published by Capcom (but developed by Hudson).

oh wow yeah its going for $30+ loose cart lol bought it back when it was $10

on a side note i was looking it up on amazon and it brought up this copy of gamepro that had a preview of gargoyles quest 2 in it and the cover made me nostalgia so damn hard

Gargoyle's Quest II can still be found loose on pricy ol' eBay for about $40 if you keep an eye out, though it's typically a $50-$60 game there now.

What I find bizarre is that it doesn't sell for twice that. Mighty Final Fight was released the same year I believe, or close to it, and had a much larger print run (given the # of sales I've seen), and it easily goes for $90 now while Gargoyle's Quest II lags behind.

They're both pretty darn good games; I'd wager to say GG2 is better once you get past that third town with the hellish jungle stage.

Damn, guess I'll be getting Gargoyle's Quest II really soon, then. Loved the first game (My first experience with it was on 3DS Virtual Console) and really want to play the other two games in the series.

Looks like my AV Fami & the converters are at the sorting facility by where I live, so hopefully it'll get delivered tomorrow!

This is my new white whale. The Famicom gun from Nintendo of Japan. I bet this will be hard to find cheap, but it's so mind-numbingly awesome compared to our zapper.

bean-gun-2.jpg

I got mine (CIB) with 3 games (Wild Gunman, Duck Hunt, and Hogan's Alley) for ~1000yen total when I was living in Japan back in 2007 or 2008. :)

It looks so realistic it's ridiculous, haha.

yeah if i get a famicom im gonna have to get one of those light guns they look rad

I won the capsule toy miniature of it the other day :P Came with little microscopic purple famicarts of the light gun games, too.

Gargoyles Quest 2 is one of those games I wish I picked up years ago when it was around $10-$20 or so. But back then I thought that was expensive compared to other games! How times change.

Oh and btw I picked up Quinty (Mendel Palace) with box for the FC recently, and I just want to give a warning about it to PAL NES users. It straight up doesn't work on PAL NESes! It crashes when it's about to load a level. I thought the cartridge was somehow broken but then I noticed I had accidentally plugged in my PAL NES instead of my NTSC one. When I switched it worked fine. Fun little game.

Also finally picked up a Kid Dracula cart. Been meaning to pick it up for a while now and found someone who had put it up as a BIN for a decent enough price. Really great game. The gameplay is good and also give you some challenge here and there. Good artstyle and graphics and the music is also really great. Along with Wai Wai World 2 I think this is one of Konami's best FC exclusives. I didn't try it on my PAL NES but I believe this one also has some issues. I think I recall reading that the status bar on the bottom is not visible on PAL systems or something.

Speaking of Konami FC exclusives, anyone have any other suggestions? :)

Got home from work, saw a package waiting for me. A few minutes later, and...

Aww yeah

(Man, this thing is smaller than I thought)

So glad I finally have one of these now. Played a bit of Little Nemo as well, the first level kicked my ass, heh.
