NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Monster Party and Dracula Kun arrived. Monster Party is wierd as hell, gameplay is ok...nothing mind blowing, but not bad either.

Dracula Kun is really fun, looks nice, and has a great soundtrack. By the way, is that supposed to be Alucard...or Dracula running around as a kid? I'm guessing Alucard since the castle already has death traps set up.

That's fantastic but oh my god, please guys stop blowing on your cartridges. You should know better than to do that.

The likelihood that the amount of moisture in your breath will damage connectors is so minuscule it's not even worth mentioning. I've had games that I've blown in since 1985 that still look brand new and have 0 signs of corrosion. Bit rot is the only thing that should concern anyone about old carts.

Well it's obviously enough moisture to help make an otherwise flakey connection work and I can't see how that can be a good thing for the game and the system.

I recommend disabling the NES10 on your system and cleaning any new cartridges you get with rubbing alcohol. We're not 5 years old anymore, we have access to screwdrivers and chemicals! :) It's up to us to keep all this gear in good shape for future generations to enjoy.

I played Mighty Final Fight literally all evening last night. Cody and Guy are so much better than Haggar; it's not even right. They give him an initial Exp boost, his attacks do double or triple damage, and still quicker enemies rope-a-dope him. Guy is definitely the most fun to play as, though Cody is well-rounded for breezing through the game on one credit.
I have Mighty Final Fight on GBA Capcom Classics Mini Mix. Are there any notable differences between the two?

Today I hit 90 boxed games. Bigger
First time I got them all together in one place.

Picked up Chip n dale, Little Nemo, Popeye, Darkman, Mousecapades and Bugs Bunny today for about $60.
Man, that pic puts a happy smile on my face. Especially dat Arkanoid!

So.....I hit some sort of jackpot. My mom is moving soon, and she found old NES games! Most of them I clearly remember as being the same ones my sisters and I had as kids!

The games I acquired are:

Mega Man 3
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Contra
Xenophobe
1942
Bad Dudes

So excited to play these again!

I come to you good folk with a question; what's the word on these combo systems out there? The Duo(Super NES/NES) as well as the ones that have the same capabilities as the Duo plus the ability to play Genesis games as well? I wanna pick one of these up to play these NES games, but I also wouldn't mind getting one that can play Super NES and Genesis as well!

Edit:

Examples

NES/SNES combo

NES/SNES/Genesis combo

Being clone hardware compatibility is never 100% and people always tell me the audio in Capcom games sounds all wrong. I typically use the original Nintendo hardware but I got a Yobo in one of my old craigslist NES hauls but I've never tried it. It's from 2005 anyway so I don't know if they've improved any.

Apart from the screen aspect being slightly squished, no. Mini Mix was how I had been playing it for quite some time. I just don't have a GB Player and wanted to play it on a regular TV (my eyes aren't super happy with handhelds anymore).

I heard that the second revision of the Retron 3 was a good one, if not the best (one of the few to play Castlevania 3 I think). I used to use one for NES/FC games, but some audio issues in HAL games and some color differences bugged me enough to prompt me to get real hardware. It worked nice as a temporary system, though, letting me play everything while I hunted down a Model 1 Genesis, SNES, and Famicom.

They play the majority of games ok, but some games just won't work in them. There's some color issues and or graphical errors. The controllers that they come with are worst 3rd party trash ever. There are a few out there that will let you use original controllers.

I'd say to wait to see what the reviews are on the Retron 5. They're claiming that they're trying to get to 100% compatibility for nes/snes/gen/gba. with hdmi out.

I really don't trust Retron 5 to be low latency. They've got Android's OS latency to get around, and then you throw on the added latency that comes with vsync'd emulation, and then you throw on the 2-3 frames of latency you'll get from your standard HDTV at its native res on top of that.

Wait and see, sure, but my hopes aren't high for anything I'd think about using.

edit: then again, maybe it's still a better choice if you're planning on hooking up original hardware to an HDTV w/o a dedicated scaler in the first place

Ill be glad when this fad of buying retro games is over.

So I can go back to finding carts for a decent price.
I think that may take years, between the people that grew up with NES/SNES now being in their 30s and earning decent paychecks, and highly watched Youtubers such as the AVGN constantly getting the word out about good/bad games.

Though if VG price charts is any indication, the climb that began in November 2011 might have finally plateaued....

(Plus, people are finally realizing today's "modern" games mostly suck...)

I think with the release of the new consoles we will see it drop.

Prices have already started to fall on games already.

Someone traded in Little Samson in at our store. Couldn't believe it :D Way too expensive for my blood though.

Hypothetically if you were there when the trade was about to happen...could you just buy it off the customer if they would be ok with whatever the store was giving them store credit, except you'd give them the same amount in cash?

It's against store policy. It sold today in no time though.

Kinda figured that. Must be hard just to see games of that rarity come in for cheap (assuming since I know they've gotta make a profit)...

Your store is cool. If I go by recent completed eBay listings, the game seems to have reached the $700 (!) plateau as of late.

We try :) There's someone very capable that has a good understanding of pricing so we don't run into much friction with the people in the know, just with the uneducated ones who think everything should be under $10.

Thanks. Guess I'll have to bust out the GB Player and check out the hub-bub. ;)

Posting my boxed NES games:

It's funny how Bible Adventures says "For Play On Nintendo" instead of NES--exactly how we spoke as kids: "Let's go play Nintendo!" lol
Bump 'n' Jump is a sentimental favorite because I used to play the arcade machine after school at the local bowling alley.

I really like how clean the Punisher box art is. Such an awesome image.

Mostly games probably. I really don't have much on snes so anything good there I'd be interested in. Genesis I'm just looking for good stuff really. Shinobi 3, SoR3, Castlevania, stuff like that. From the list up there I have mega man 3, snakes revenge, star tropics 2, and little nemo. For something worth more than those I'd throw in cash as well. If nothing else, I'd trade something for the bubble bobble.

Interested in that great condition NES man.....I see that from your list I do have Mega Man 3, and would consider trading it for sure. Get at me via PM! :)

wasn't one of you looking for mega man 6?

sounds good, the shipping for console + cords + controller id have to estimate, but yeah do you have MM3 + say one of the cheaper ones on that list? i gotta ask, man!

Hey guys, Should I spend the $30+ on Choujin Sentai Jetman?

Also any good sites to buy cases for my Famicom/NES/SNES/GEN games? I live by the ocean. :/

Looking for some advice here.

I just bought a top loading NES as my old front-loader wasn't working all that great. My problem with the top-loader is that sometimes it works great but I seem to have a lot of problems getting games to start. Most of the time when I put a game in and turn the system on, I just get a grey screen. I can sometimes get the game to work by turning the system on and off a few times but that seems random. Even when a game works, if i take it out and try a different one, it won't work again when I put the first game back in. I just get a blank grey screen.

Are my games just dirty? Could something else on the system be defective? I've cleaned my games with alchohol and a q-tip but it doesn't seem to help.

edit: Ok, it might just be that my Zelda 2 is defective because it's the only game I can't seem to get working at all. The others will give the grey screen once or twice after cleaning them but will typically work after that.

edit 2: I cleaned everything again and got it working. Seems to be working more consistently now. I guess my stuff was just really dirty.

When in doubt, clean it out.

Got my Four Score!

Now four some 4-player v-ball (and Gauntlet II), assuming I can assemble 3 friends. =p

(thx for the offer anyway, baphomet!)

No worries! That's my problem, I don't have 4 friends : / I'm kidding, but I'd never find enough people to want to sit down and play Nintendo World Cup with at any point probably in the rest of my life. I recommend that one for 4 players if you don't have it. Great Kunio-Kun game.

I was! That's a damn good price for CIB too!

I found someone selling an RGB modded NES for $300 on another forum. I'm SO, SO tempted to buy it....After seeing all my other systems in RGB and some of Shining's/the other poster who made the custom fami/nes pictures of their RGB consoles, I just really want to have my nes look that crisp. That's damn near the price of a PS4 though...

Decisions, decisions...

^luckyyyy

you could wait on the universal PPU and see how it turns out, but yeah, $300 prolly isnt bad to have one already done! is he firm on the price?

Question:

I got an NES and I want to assemble a little gaming booth in my room upstairs (dining room, office at the moment)

I got an Samsung LED-Screen with RGB and DVI out. Is there any possibility to get it to work with my NES? Sound shouldnt be the problem but I don't know if I can properly sat up the screen with the NES. Any help?
