PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Interesting device but cant ps3 already play hulu netflix etc? I only see playing ps vita games on tv the only new capability. That isnt apart of the ps3/4 ecosystem
What if you have more than one TV and you are into that Sony ecosystem of games and movies? The streaming of the PS4 games to another TV alone.... That means it has to be variable resolutions by the way - up to 1080P. At least 720P. Unless they think I want a sub HD PS4 stream (I don't).

So this can play all digital stuff? As well as physical Vita games? This could be my PS1/PS2/Indie/PSP/Vita machine....

No PS2 games until they hit Gaikai or Sony works some real emulator magic. Everything else minus a few incompatible Vita games due to touchscreen and/or camera, yes.

Does this play the full PSP library on PSN as opposed to just some of them like on the regular Vita?
It's still a Vita so it'll be limited to whatever the Vita is. Have fun transferring from a PS3 on the same TV! Seriously though, it's now a home console so SCEA might notice it and plug some of those holes.

This is awesome news for the hardcore. But I fear it won't be enough for the masses. It just doesn't make sense for Joe Public.

- They don't want to play VITA games in the first place - otherwise they would have bought a VITA (nevermind their pricetag)
- All digital gaming (PSP, PSOne, etc. - anything not VITA) is foreign to most.
- Set top box features are already eclipsed by something like the Roku 3 (best device for streaming, IMO - and it's around $90).

I'll be getting one, for sure - but I just don't see it as this breakthrough thing. It will certainly be a thing, though.

it outputs 720p to TVs

heh I'm going to assume that you're joshing.

If not, that's not really the point.

Some people really love playing on the telly. Guess how many games some of those are missing out on? Especially those who probably can't afford a console. All the games that are Vita specific, all the awesome "indies" that have been released. And those that just don't like the OTG concept?

And this is only the "I toss my own salad" scenario whereas in truth it's a strategic business decision. The Vita might get an extended Android library(PSM), how many have not gone to exclusively play on android/ios? Or rather those who never played a game and just now realised that they are "gamers" as well?
This is a perfect step into riding the coming way that is surely to come while Apple push their own box. A contender is already here with similar games and even better ones.

Then again I might just go back to tossing my own salad since I have no clue what they thought, just my crazy input.

Well, I've been screwed over by Sony so many times over the years (hence the Minidisc reference) that I kind of built a passive immune system to ward off their BS, but I do agree with you and the others that the Vita TV concept will push their contents to a new, previously oblivious to gaming audience.

the catch to Vita TV is that its not actually a Vita. Its the Super Super Super Slim PS3 we've all been waiting for!

Absolutely brilliant move in my opinion.

It won't cannibalize the seemingly non-existent Vita market and it must have been ridiculously cheap to plan and assemble.

It's also a hedge on the PS4 (as well as a cross-play system seller.) What if the mobile doomsayers are right and a certain percent of gamers or possible gamers really have had enough of $400+ consoles as well as $200+ mobiles? What if that same large consumer slice really can't distinguish between next and current gen graphics, or at least enough to sway their purchase decision?

This just might be exactly the product they want. Also, it's easy to disparage the uninformed non-enthusiast, and some of them certainly deserve it, but time to research and the disposable income required for a healthy, wide-ranging gaming habit are often luxuries simply not available to a quite a lot of people. A $100 Christmas present that means your kid can play Uncharted goes a long way.

This is a Vita, it won't play games a Vita can't play. It won't even play all games Vita can play (until patches are released).

That sucks. Sony hasn't worked on PSP compatibility since around the Vitas launch. I was hoping they would include the PSP chipset.

To who though? Hardcore gamers aren't going to like going sub-HD on their TVs... Hell, we're talking sub-subHD... below current PS360 levels. Casuals don't want a phone attached to their TV sans the phone... see Ouya. Who does that leave then?

I'm honestly confused as to who this is for. At least the 2DS was clearly targetted at children.

Hardcore gamers bought virtual console titles like Earthbound in droves. That game was sub VGA.

Ouya sold a ton of hardware but their issue was that they had a poor software stream and lack of curation. Vita TV solves these problems with the bundled 90 day PS+ and the fact that you're playing established PlayStation franschise games.

You have full versions of everything from Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, to the latest Dragon's Crown and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1+2.

For gaming, this is the official emulator box you've been waiting for. The one that Sony wants on the market too cause everything Android is soaked in piracy.

All that matters to devs and pubs is the total user install base

Be that portable vita or not it doesn't matter

Perhaps it matters to you as you desire games be developed with touch controls etc.

(Personally I've always found those to be fairly gimmicky)

Gimmicky? Not always. Point and click functions in Dragon's Crown are more convient with touch than the right stick method.

Vita is saved......in Japan.
I can see this being fairly successful here in the US depending on how much marketing muscle is put behind it.

Treat this as a re-launch Sony.

If anything, this piece of hardware should spur Vita app development. We've already seen a little bit of this as Vita has an email client, twitter, facebook, flickr, hulu, book reader and even Skype.

If there is a way to make it seem like i'm in a different country (like unblockus), I'd buy two since region switching is annoying. One for my AU account, and a US account for Netflix.

You sound a bit misinformed. The Vita is capable of playing just about 100% of PSP games. The emulator is fantastic. The only problem is that not all games are available for download on the store. Using a kernel exploit from many firmwares ago changes this though.

I expect now that this has come out we may see another round of PSX/PSP releases... hopefully... and more free ones as well on PS+.

I don't have one myself, but I've heard the Vita OS is more suitable as an instant-on device. So the PSVita TV is more suitable as a media device plugged into the TV than the cumbersome PS3 in both size and UI.

So.

Minecraft is hitting Vita eventually. Let's say it ends up being a good port. Probably not going to have infinite world size, but let's say it's on par with the 360 version. Let's say the control scheme doesn't rely too heavily on touch - or that it has some simple touch inputs that translate easily to R2/L2 on the Dual Shock.

How big could a $150 VTV/DS3 Minecraft bundle be? I KNOW it seems counterintuitive to many of us here (ie "It's on phones, it's on PC, it's on toasters - who would buy it?") but SO much about Minecraft just defies expectations. This would be worth it to some families for MC alone. The hundreds of other games available would just be a bonus.

What the hell is a Vita? Is what most people will still be saying, but it's kinda nice. :p

Sucks that it can't output video at 1080p.

A CFW TVita would be pretty cool, just to play some of the older PSP games I still have around.

Why didn't they call it the TVita. :lol

Does anyone think that the Vita TV will lead to more games being developed for the Vita? I'm certainly hoping that enough people will buy this to entice developers to create games for Vita.

Minecraft Vita can have all the touch input function it need to make it a good experience, dev will just need to provide alternate control scheme (which can be the same for 360 minecraft control) for when it's played on VitaTV. just because VitaTV don't have touch screen doesn't mean the Portable Vita version have to suffer.

That apple event is tomorrow right? I'm guessing they might have something similar cuz of the ubisoft and call of duty leaks. Wonder it would be a direct competitor to Vita Tv

Dear lord this is so bought. Never would have thought the Vita would be my most wanted console since the PS2.

Perfect for our 2nd TV.

Hows the Vita browser?

This is also the perfect travel companion for us when we go on vacations.

If you already own a vita and have a ps4 pre-ordered and have PS+ there is no excuse not to buy this even if your not ultimately the one who will use it its just to much of a damn good deal.

If Vita TV can dual-boot into Android and Vita OS then say goodbye to all Android micro-consoles like Ouya,Gamestick,Gamepop and Project MOJO.

Amazon and Google might have the fighting chance if the rumored micro-consoles from them were true.Small-time players like Ouya? Not a chance.

why would it boot into android os?

If it really is $100 or less, I'd probably be crazy enough to buy this for the sole reason of playing P4G.

Wouldn't shock if they announce P4G or another P4 remake on consoles within a few month of me buying this

That's probably the only thing that keeps it from being perfect that there is yet a good hack that lets you run good homebrew like XBMC.

It supports several streaming sites now but in truth, it works very well and fast as a browser. For a little portable device, the web browser easily beats the PS3/360 browsers by a long show in terms of multi function and speed. I use it all the time at home on wifi or at work on 3G. I don't expect that to change with Vita TV.

While the added functionality of Android would be amazing, it also introduces a MASSIVE security risk on Sonys part. Android has a high piracy rate and introducing it onto the system could be a way for hackers to eventually find a way to pirate Vita games. Sony has apparently invested a lot of effort into locking down Vita OS to prevent piracy after what happened with the PSP.

So as much as I too would like the functionality of Android, this would never happen unless they could guarantee Vita OS would still be secure.

Quite honestly I wanted a dual boot Android/Vita OS smartphone, but only because I wanted more apps on the phone to make it more desirable for others and so that it wouldn't instantly flop. I think the introduction of this device will give more app makers a reason to put their apps and games on Vita OS, and that alone will help to build up Vita own ecosystem. Given time, it might not have any need for Android.
