PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

It's $99 which means I'm in. Probably gonna get them Viacom distribution per their new partnership with Sony. I wish Sony just had android as their Vita OS, but eh I'm sure it will be sleekly designed. I'm hyped! Need an OG Vita and a Vita tv!

I don't understand why people are excited about this, can someone explain? Am I missing something?

You can now play VITA titles on your TV? Why would you want to play handheld games on a TV when there are console games specifically made for this? Not to mention the fact that VITA has no games...

wait it doesn't support SD TVs?

I should really get an HD TV soon lol

$5 says this tech will be built into a Sony Bravia TV in under a year. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they announce such a TV at CES in January. This tech is obvious small enough and is cheap enough to be put into a TV, so why not? I suppose the question is will they just put it in one or two models? Or most of their product line? Or create a new segment for Playstation TVs?

This looks amazing! Are there many Vita games that don't require the touch screens?

Over 100 at launch apparently, other games can always be patched. The good thing about this device is devs will start to develop with non-touch controls in mind and i say its a win win.

Holy shitballs, that's so crazy it almost makes sense.

Mind blown would = new TV purchase for me and my Sony is only a year old.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but Vita alone has over 100 games, it can play about 600 PSP games and about 600 PS One games. Vita itself also has PS Mobile and PS Minis, but who knows if this device can access that.

Now even though PS Vita TV can't access every single Vita game, it can still access most of them, and there's the chance that some games will be patched to be more compatible with Dual Shock 3/4 controllers.

That's a massive library of games to start off with. Then we factor in Sonys increased push for Vita games, the ability to stream from your PS4 to another TV in your house and the future Gaikai support, we find this thing has an amazing future. Sony's in the process of transforming their ecosystem, so we don't quite know what the end result is, but it looks VERY bright.

Can't be helped that I'm a poor college student :(

You need to sort out your priorities. If I was still using an SDTV I wouldn't eat until I had enough money for a little 720p 32" LCD. Starvation is less barbaric than exposing your eyeballs to standard definition video. Shit takes years off your life. Proven fact.

I think another thing people are overlooking is that this device is STILL portable. You could put this thing in your pocket and take it to a friends house.......

Don't forget we're talking Vita games, PSP games, AND PS1 games....

For around 100 bucks...

That stupid value.... a stupid amount of value...

This needs a controller and power cables to function, so I don't see this being widely adopted, to be honest...

Those who want portability will use their smartphones or tablets, and a chromecast/apple TV/whatever to stream wirelessly to the TV...

Umm yeah, and what precisely are you going to be streaming on those devices? It certainly won't be Playstation games.

Think the Xbone will top 1300? :P

As of now there are more than 3000 games published on 360's indie games... Don't underestimate the power of self publishing and using your console as a devkit :)

This upcoming generation is most likely going to explode any previous gen records when it comes to published games.

From this thread it looks like this device can output at 720p and 1080i, no 1080p. Some have speculated that might just be game related though and video output for streaming options might be 1080p

Right now I just want to know the markup play asia will put on this to import into the UK. Their prices are usually quite reasonable and if I can get this for under £100 ill be buzzing.

This is an excellent idea, and a total surprise coming from Sony. I was not expecting them to offer a device like this, based on the PS Vita hardware.

I had been considering getting a device like a Roku or a Chromecast for a while, but this looks like a mighty attractive alternative. I don't expect it to outdo their competitors with regard to the availability of applications for movies, TV, or music, but the availability of high-quality gaming on the same device gives this machine an edge. If you've got multiple TVs in the house, and are planning on picking up a PS4, then the ability to use Remote Play in conjunction with the PS4 is another potential selling point.

It's in the spec sheet. No 1080p. Period.

I just realized that if I import this, I won't be able to Remote Play the PS4 until the Firmware update for the PS Vita TV comes out =/

8y old's first gaming console, remote screen ps4 to downstairs, standalone mini music+video+netflix client, couch multiplay ps1 psv games, later gaigai, wide catalog of good games, decent price point. Makes sense.

Yes psp psvita has an excellent time lasting games, not a number of android games but then how many good bigscreen android games we have seen (or good Android game in general)? Price point is spot on to even compete against WiiU.

It's cheap, and I can play the exclusives that I want to play.

I can't imagine how ugly those vita games are going to look on the bigger screen.

does it matter? I just want to play the games. I game in a 24 inch monitor so it probably won't kill my eyes.

I wish this thing had cheaper memory, and the vita content manager software had better syncing functionality. I'd love to uninstall iTunes and get rid of my buggy first gen Apple TV, but with Apple TV I can turn on my computer and iTunes, hit one button to update my podcasts, hit another to sync to Apple TV, and then I can turn my pc off and listen to any podcast I want.

I can download a third party podcast downloader and point it to the vita folder that content manager looks at, but there really isn't an easy way to sync content to the vita is there?

Any news about when either Vita Tv or the vita revision come out in north america?

No news yet, but it's obviously coming.

Japan got shafted in the PS4 release date, so US/Europe needs to be tier-2 in something else.

With that being said, I don't expect VitaTV to be out until the Viacom deal is inked, and Sony has that IPTV deal going for them. That would be a huge advantage to release and push the VitaTV.

I would also expect Sony to be actively working on courting more media apps to be ported to Vita, to make it closer to AppleTV/other competitors.

that's a shame I'd really like to have a Vita Tv for my ps4 as soon as possible. Having the choice of playing the ps4 in my bedroom while the wife is busy with the main one in the living room would be boss.

Actually, thinking about it more, I shouldn't even have to go through my PC to get podcasts. If this was a PSP TV, the podcast situation would have been pretty damn good. Why did Sony have to take a step back in this area?

Hmm, any thoughts on whether or not local 2-player might work for PSP and Vita games that have that feature? It would really suck if something like Tekken or Marvel VS Capcom had that feature missing on VitaTV.

You can use the PS Vita as a remote for the Video Application

Videos stored within Memory Card or those videos being played on the “Browser” of the PS Vita system*8 can easily be transferred to PS Vita TV to be viewed on the large TV screen. While being transferred, PS Vita can be used as a remote controller using the video player application.

Now we can put that Cross-Controller rumor to rest.

2 DualShock 3's supported only for PS1 games. You can use ad-hoc for PS Vita to PS Vita TV Cross-Play

vita and psp are always a personal device, there's no function of having 2 controller on 1 vita. before, I think they could do it with a patch, not sure if they'll bother with it though.

This news is awesome. I do almost all my portable gaming at home as it is, and if Japan has a late love affair with the vita like they did with the psp then this will be well worth the low entry cost.

Ps1 games are confirmed as having 2 player local multiplayer. I doubt it for current PSP and Vita games, though future Vita games might support it as well.

Absolutely blown away by this pleasant surprise, with DS4 support in the future with an update this will an amazing little device.
BRAVO SONY! BRAVO!
