Let's look back: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Since I'm fucking stoked for GTAV I decided to put out my PS2 again and play some San Andreas. Seriously, how good is this game?

Does it pick up after the first hour or two? I could never get into it. I just bought it again so I could, and everything about it immediately turned me off.

Also, GTA IV is the best, but that's mostly because I <3 New York.

.

my word yes.

Though SA is probably equal as my third favourite 3d GTA (with gta 4). I guess that makes it equal worst? haha.

Great game. I always knew if it were made with today's graphics it would be the greatest game of all time, and that's why GTA V will be.

Forget about best GTA game, it's the best open world game ever. So much content and mission diversity and they keep introducing new things to you even throughout the 3rd city. Hell you don't even learn how to fly planes until around that time.

Started a new game of San Andreas after beating GTAIV to confirm my disappointment in the latter, saw my bike skill level up as I rode around the city and shed a tear.

You guys remember the outrage some people had over playing as a black character?

I know someone who still won't play it because of that.

SA is still the best GTA out there.

A masterpiece, the best GTA game so far.

My favourite thing to do was activate the super jump cheat for the pedal bikes, then making massive jumps at skyscrapers, smacking the edge on the way up and getting insane rotations. Good times.

Was Bigfoot really hidden somewhere in foresty countryside or did that turn out to be a false rumor?

Pretty sure that turned out to be not true. Hopefully with all the wilderness in 5 they'll include him.

Loved the large off road areas. Even with GTA III I spent some times in the tiny tiny park areas and when San Andreas came around riding a dirtbike through country side or a mountain bike up chillihad are my favourite memories.

Really? Didn't catch that back then.

The REAL problem is that black people ain't as cool as white/Italians perception wise. When you think white/Italian criminals; there is an aura of yeah.. the cool factor. Black people; you'd associate with slums and ghettos, pimps, druggies and all the really negative associations (WHICH they've been dealt an unfair hand with). Mention Harlem and nothing really good comes out in relationship to the area. Racial stereotypes are deeply ingrained IMO. White america will find it hard to deal with the theme. I personally can't watch black porn. GTA SA sounds like something I won't be able to get into. (But then I wasn't too impressed with GTA to go run out and buy VC).

I think once word gets out about the setting. This game won't sell that well. (DID DEF JAM sell well?) Fact that Manhunt sold like crap is also indicative that maybe the lustre on violent games is wearing out.

Best GTA IMO. While I think VC is incredible as well, for what SA achieved it gets the nod from me.

Hours upon hours lost in that game. Kept save files before certain missions so I could go back and replay them.

This is by far my least favorite GTA. I could never get into it due to the heavy 90's gangsta culture kind of setting.

I passed many weekends playing San Andreas Multiplayer (the PC mod). A really great way to free roam the map.

Best GTA.

I have a Dualshock 3 and a Xbox 360 controller. Is there an easy way to play San Andreas on PC with those? I will not (re)play it with a mouse and keyboard.

Still mad i didn't get to Vegas.

I stopped on a mission on the second island because i couldn't pass it. I think it was riding along the freeway on a bike then shooting a helicopter down i think.

I can't be bothered to play all the way up to that point again though.

I really hope Rockstar does an anniversary edition for mobile devices. Having my DualShock hooked up instead of my mouse/keyboard would be great to replay this.

Aaah, "Toreno's Last Flight." That's the second to last mission before Las Venturas too. It was kind of tricky.. Best way to handle it was to ride up ahead of the helicopter, jump off your bike, and nail it with a couple rockets. You'd have police heat during th emission but as soon as you took ti down, the heat were gone.

San Andreas is up there for my favorite game of all time, maybe edging out the HL2 + E for my favorite game ever. The scope of that game is simply unreal. I was watching Game Trailers Retrospective on GTA last night and in 9 or 10 months, they created this hugely massive world, with tons of missions, tons of side stuff, tons of unlockables and discoverables in a time frame that is staggering. After replaying the game several times, I'll still find an area that I never visited, or discover something that I had never seen. This after putting definitely hundreds of hours into the game.

Dude, you literally had two more missions before you unlocked Las Venturas.
