My character is not going to get deleted for not having logged in for over a year, will it ?

Also, when I do play the 2.0 game for the first time, will I have to do all those annoying tutorial quests all over again despite being level 30 ? (I haven't played since July 2012; I am a legacy member)

Oh, gotcha. And you use Aetherflow for Fester. I guess most of my fights were pretty short, so I never had that problem. But I haven't used SMN on much end game stuff, so there's that, lol.

Ruin II is a godsend when you have to move frequently, but it will run you out of mana faster. It's not like Summoners have gigantic mana issues though.

It's easier to supplement VIT with food than STR, so if those are the two main stats you're considering, just go with STR. Gear and skill are ultimately the main consideration.

Anyone own the game on both PC and PS3? I'm wondering how the transition from one to another works? Do hotbars get messed up or anything like that? I was thinking of picking it up for the PS3 for when my wife is on the PC.

It's not that hard. Just takes time. grind it out, use some leves here and there and use your gathering log. There is no "easy way" to leveling mining/botany/fishing. The game gives you everything.

Alright cool, I have a question about Leves, when does the allowance reset is it every day or once a week?

I'm not convinced at the utility of STR on PLD on any level.
If I want STR on PLD in a pinch, I'll eat food or take a potion to buff it temporarily.

I mitigate damage and have no issue with Shield Oath's multiplier buffering my enmity gain. We do wet noodle damage anyway, so I'm not about to kick my health to the curb to get some negligible STR benefit.

When I swapped over to PS3 and changed my bars it didn't affect my PC versions bars.

VIT is a comfort stat and you just need enough to keep you from getting killed. If there's a predictable one-shot mechanic that you need a certain amount of HP to survive, there are abilities and potions that can increase your HP pool temporarily.

I disagree with this. For Tanking, VIT is not a comfort stat, it's a stat that currently has the highest value for survivability rate even over the small increases in life drain from STR. As a tank, you want to maximize your mitigation and survivability instead of how much HP you get back from Bloodbath/StormP. Additionally, VIT yields more passive value when considering how it affects Defiance/ThrillOB. It's better overall and should be prioritized over STR whenever possible for a Tank.

I have both and I have to set my hotbar up manually on PS3. Other than that no hiccups

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I might go for Vitality, if strength only boosts attack power by 1% then it's a bit pointless really. I thought it might have increased the life leeching abilities, like inner beast, by a lot :(

I always make good use of inner beast when tanking a boss.

After a few days of being 50, it's starting to become clear the direction ffxiv is going with endgame and its making me reconsider this game in the long term. I've been playing MMOs for a long time and used to the "time sink design" but ffxiv is just bashing this design onmy head....The mere thought that I need to run AK 60 more times to max out my 50 "PRE" raiding gear... So many thoughts on FFXIV generic endgame system and where it's probably going in the future is making me cry out for an evolution in MMO's. /end rant since nobody wants to read this now while they are still enjoying the game.

In WoW, Stamina was also the best damage-smoothing stat by a large margin, but very few tanks actually prioritized it. When they did, it was because they were running 25-man heroics with bosses that would two-shot you nonstop for the entire duration of the fight. In small groups especially, tank DPS matters and so does anything you can do to conserve the healer's mana.

But have you seen Binding Coils of Bahamut?

Release content is a poor long term indicator of a games endgame philosophy. That said any short term problems are certainly legitimate.

I hear ya - although, I have to have hope in the game since I just bought 180days of playtime.

I think that players want the endgame style play immediately, so I hope that future MMORPGs like EQN and TITAN will have the feel of endgame raiding very early.

Also, this game is making me want to go back and try out Tanking in WoW since I haven't played that game in 2 years lol.

In the end it doesn't matter. You could put it in piety and I doubt people would notice.

VIT - 300 hp
STR - 1% attack boost

Kinda pisses me off too. If you're going to do stat allocation make it mean something.

This is where the game is losing me. I'm not sure anything I'm doing matters. I don't need Path of Exile, but I would like a game like this to offer some creativity.

I *think* the casting bar can be moved but Im not 100% certain.

I agree about the placement and look of the party member section too. I know that it can be moved but, for me, I just cant get used to it anywhere I put it. Im thinking about moving my gil, inventory, and mini menu to the upper left and the party list to the bottom right. That way, my abilties and party members will be right there. so My eyes dont have to dart around to much to realize whats going on.

Yeah, the only place I've been able to use it effectively is on the right side of the screen around the middle. If I put it in the upper left corner (where I see a lot of people putting it and where for superficial neatness it makes the most sense) my eye has to travel over a slew of unnecessary information every time I want to track the health bars and it just doesn't work for me in battle. It's frustrating because it pretty much means I have to base the rest of my HUD around the party list which limits my options.

Another issue is that (I believe) the negative status effects on party members can extend off the screen if you have it on the right side, which is obviously a problem.

Shouldn't do, my old character from 1.0 launch was still there. I only played for maybe two weeks so it's been a while.

I agree that it would've been nice to see something new and fresh, but progress toward your goal little by little is at least better than rolling on a RNG.

I personally don't mind much in the end though because my focus for XIV, like it was in XI, is to find a group of people that I genuinely like spending time with so that I'm having fun no matter what I'm doing. I'll be consistently behind the curve of the ultra-efficiency focused players, but the tradeoff is worth it to me.

Okay, I have a quick but largely unimportant little question.

Knowing what we know about this game, and what sort of hardware it takes to run it. Roughly what sort of PC would I need if I wanted to run this game at Maximum, on a 120hz monitor, at WQHD resolution (2560x1440)

To be clear, I'm not talking about building a rig like this anytime soon. This is more for, a year or so down the time, assuming I'm still playing this.

Agreed. I had to level Arcanist up to 15 to unlock White Mage. I'm sure it gets better as you get higher in level, but holy shit was I bored.

I expect that in the short term, most of the Arcanists you see will end up being Scholars. They are great as a complement to WHM's.. useful shields, absorb effects, and exceptional single-target healing burst.

So I only just got my first character up to level 10 last night on Ultros. In case anyone is curious, I'm playing as a Miqo'te named Yuri Paw (creative I know, right?) as a Thaumaturge. I've basically been following the quests wherever they take me and having fun playing the game, but I still feel very unfamiliar with what the game has to offer.

I've been browsing some of these guide sites in the OP, but one thing I'm not finding directly is what kind of quests of special abilities become available when? For instance, I have no idea still when I gain access to a mount, or the ability to change jobs, or even what all the jobs in the game are. I know there's a summoner class, but only because I've seen people use avatars in the game...yet I don't even know what all jobs available are.

Maybe I'm thinking too much that this game is like FFXI, but the thing is I just don't know...like that game had advanced jobs at level 30 you could go after, is there even something similar in this game? I kinda miss the simplicity of the interface that that game had with access that kind of information. You go to your mog house, and under change jobs, you know there's at least X number of jobs you have yet to unlock because there were slots with ??? there.

Yeah, I've read many positive things on Scholars. I haven't tried Arcanist in a group, so I can't judge them too harshly. I did enjoy having the ability to kite enemies rather effectively, though. Being able to throw up Aero and Bio on an enemy, then run around in a circle while Carby does DPS and the DoT's ticked off their health allowed me to tank enemies much higher level than myself.

I believe you get the chance to unlock job changing at level 10. I think you need to do your level 10 job quest first, though. As far as advanced jobs, you gain the access to unlock these at level 30 through your job quests. Once you complete the quest, you get a pearl or crystal that you can equip on your character that lets you change to the advanced job.

All you need to do to change jobs is fine the job's guild, talk to the NPC with the quest icon above their head, and they will let you into the guild. They will give you the starting weapon for that class, you equip it, bam, you're that job.

For the mount, once you get into a Grand Company (you get to choose from the three large cities), you can get the quest to get the Chocobo. You will need to do things that give you Grand Company seals (you get them from fates, from supply and provisioning missions, and Grand Company hunting logs). Once you have 2,000 seals, you can get a Chocobo.

CLARIFICATION EDIT: You join a Grand Company by going through the main story. Those quests will walk you through joining one.

You can see all of the base level jobs on your character menu (Shortcut: push C on the keyboard). There will be a tab in this menu that shows you the available starting jobs.

You get Summoner by leveling Arcanist to 30 and Thaumaturge to 15, then doing the level 30 Arcanist mission acquired at the ARC guild.

YET ANOTHER EDIT: http://xivdb.com/ is a good place for information. Go to Skills, your battlecraft class, and it will show you all of the advanced jobs underneath the starting jobs. This is also a great site to find exactly where hunting log mobs are.

Games been out a little over two weeks now, if your so well versed in MMO's you understand that content takes time, and will come.

I do think the spreadsheet in the OT could use some cleaning up and additional columns...though Im not sure if thats going to be any help now with 335 names on there. Youll never get everyone to update their stuff.

Might be a good idea to re-do the sheet in a month or so. By then, we'll have a better idea of whos still playing and it wont be so....huge.

This is an empty spreadsheet that I remade from the 1.0 days to get ready for 2.0 but I never did anything with it.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ar5mJHxtjN9sdDVlNFdBWmtJVDlzU1RlTW1wa2cxTGc&usp=sharing
I filled myself in as an example.
I dont know if we want to use something similar now but I still have that if anyone is interested in doing something with it.

Obviously, it needs new tabs and whatnot for the amount of servers now and can probably even be stripped down to remove the "Job" columns as I think that is pretty useless info.

I love SCh and that will be my main for the foreseeable future (I've never played an MMO before with such a well made healing pet) but I think the ACN/SMN is quite undervalued, and not just the sustained dmg/debuffs. I've "emergency tanked" so many dungeon bosses or adds or FATE bosses that I've lost count. I wouldn't want to run through a 50s dungeon main tanking or anything (the pet AI/commands are kind of a pain and really ineffective vs more than a couple mobs) but Topaz/Titan have turned "hopeless" situations into facerolling snoozefests enough times for me to feel legit.

Quite a few people were wondering about Alphinaud's sister (End game spoilers):
You talk to her after you beat all three primals in hard mode. Part of the Bahamut primal storyline I assume.

The tanking pets are pretty burly. I do think it's an issue that the DPS pets are excessively squishy and die a lot to boss effects, especially Garuda-Egi. Ifrit-Egi is a nuker so it's not so bad for him.

SMN are the only class with insta raise, which a lot of people don't know about still. You don't want a healer to raise when they have to take care of the party first. Moving a DPS to raising duty is a god send.
