At no point has Sakurai ever stated that third party characters must be relevant to Nintendo. Just that they have to have appeared on a Nintendo console at some point.

Anyways, I'd accept Snake's removal if they replace him with another "Konami" character...Bomberman!

Good song. Although I disagree with many design choices for Brawl's gameplay, one thing I think most fans can agree on is the very diverse and satisfying soundtracks packed into that game.

I am paraphrasing things I have read from Sakurai during Brawl's development, I may be overstating things, but I don't think it is an outlandish statement. So far all of the third party characters included in Smash games are very relevant to Nintendo consoles, expect for Snake, and his inclusion wasn't due to internet fan polls or stemming from a solid working relationship between two companies.

This is extrapolation on nothing. At no point has Sakurai stated that the characters should be important to Nintendo or anything like that. This is something the fanbase has basically made up from nothing after the fact.

Who gives a shit anyway; this isn't a Dr. Mario or Young Link scenario where it's a character blatantly put in at the last minute to pad the game's roster out. It was a major character addition Nintendo and Konami hyped to hell and back from day one about being in the last game who a lot of people really enjoyed being in the game. Removing him solely due to an effort to maintain a game as crazy as Smash's sense of 'historical relevance' to Nintendo after he's already an established part of the franchise is ridiculous and selfish to the majority.
Plus Snake leaving isn't going to magically make an Advance Wars character show up either. It's a lose-lose situation if he goes.

Even if it is an exaggeration it isn't like it is completely unfounded. Why else would Sakurai even bother with the Nintendo console rule if he didn't think relevancy was important to some degree?

Also what are you guys expecting for a release date? I'm betting next Christmas. Or even earlier. As long as there are no last minute major roster additions I think things will be complete in less than a year and a half.

October 2007, during testing. There won't be any Smash Bros. leaks until the end of development. The only people who currently know anything about the game are the developers in Japan and the Treehouse translators in America, neither of whom are going to spoil anything about the game (for obvious reasons). Testers have no sentimental attachment to the work and are more likely to break a nondisclosure agreement.
