SPRING BREAKERS (OT) Why Y'all Actin' 'Spicious?

Almost as if the movie is supposed to be this surreal dream sequence that may or not be happening. Like Spring Break itself and the magical experience it is.

I guess I just can't relate because I've never had the spring break experience as depicted in this movie with bitches and beaches. Wild On! on E! is my only reference point, and that show stopped airing shortly after my balls dropped, so...

Do you go to any parties to dance with half naked people and crazy crowds?

I used to back at Kent State a few years ago, but that's a very different experience to me than what I see at these spring break events. They were in the middle of the night at a house with tons of young drunk people. We were either in the backyard or in the basement playing beer pong and doing other crazy shit. I guess it was sorta dream like, but that's due to consuming way too much alcohol.

I think this is the kind of movie that either connects with you or it doesn't, and if it doesn't you can't stand it. That's why I'm not surprised it's the most polarizing film on GAF right now next to Only God Forgives.

This is the worst movie I've seen in a good while. The premise sounded like it could be something cool but it failed in just about every possible way. Acting was so bad I almost wonder if it was bad on purpose. Story was just lots of nonsense and showing the same clips of naked people over and over while someone whispers nonsense into a microphone, that's about 98% of the movie. Except maybe the music which was great.

what an empty meaningless flick

noone will remember this one

I'll remember it for the Franco gun scene.

Although I am very disappointed they didn't get Riff Raff to play the role after watching a few of his vids. Now that would have been amazing. Franco did a good job, but he pales in comparison to the guy his performance was based on.

Movie was going okay/well but ended very badly. The ending changed my opinion of the movie from a 3.5 or 4/5 to a 2/5. Too much lost potential, no closure on most of the cast, very fake/unbelievable, some stupid story decisions, etc. etc.

I feel that we did need a big mainstream film that reflected this side of American culture, but I don't think this is the one we needed. Harmony Korine doesn't really have much to say. Or maybe he's just afraid to make any kind of statement.

I liked this movie. It's a surreal dreamlike reality. I don't think you need to analyze it much deeper than that.

this movie was really good
i don't know any of these actresses and couldnt care a bit about them as opposed to most of gaf, but this was an incredible exercice of style. Loved it and I don't see how anyone interested in movies or cinema in general can say it was bad or that no one will remember it.

I'm listening to the commentary and Harmony Korine talks about all the "research" he did by watching spring break videos (lol).

I wanted to watch this film because I thought "Harmony" was a woman, and that Spring Breakers, featuring a cast primarily of women who wield power would be in juxtoposition of the female objectivication in Spring break imagery. And as I'm watching the film I can't help but feel the imagery of the film to be more exploitative than deconstructionist. Anyhow, when I was listening to the commentary I immediately thought... Harmony has a really uhh... Sultry... Voice. But she's got a lot of vocal fry, so maybe it's not a dude... Let me google this and ooooookay, it's that dude who make Kids, okay, yeah, that explains Spring Breakers.

Scaredy cat, scaredy cat, scaredy cat for five minutes.

I just saw this movie and it was actually pretty good. Beautifully shot and Franco is one lucky sob. The ending was crazy.

Same. It wasn't a good movie, but I still enjoyed it. Aside from "LOOK AT MA SHIET!", I really enjoyed the scene where he starts singing that Britney song.

Hit up redbox today.. I really fucking loved this movie! Still can't believe it was shown in theatres, traditional people must've been PISSED.

I had alot to say about it but I'll just keep it at this. :) good stuff. Will probably buy the bluray in the coming weeks.

I went to it three times in the theater. First time was the Thursday night showing opening weekend. Someone got up and loudly proclaimed "WORST MOVIE EVER" when the credits started to roll. Second time I went there was someone who went "WHAT THE FUCK" during the
gun blowjob
scene and then again when the credits started. So many haters out here.

Most people probably thought they were in for a teen party comedy.

It reminds me of when Vanilla Sky was marketed as a chick flick... most of the people who saw it were the wrong audience.

Or people who went to Punch Drunk Love expecting a typical Sandler movie.

I have to laugh at people showing any kind of surprise that a Harmony Korine movie was weird. I liked it a lot. It kept reminding me of Heart Of Darkness for some reason.

Yep, I loved that about the movie. My friends and I went to an opening weekend showing of Ravenous which the other 3 people in the theater thought was going to be a serious drama about cannibalism, I guess. That was pretty fun too.

Watched this last night. I was expecting the satirical angle, but I wasn't expecting the intentionally underwater pacing and the ambient, low-key score. If the film wasn't made as a direct satire of the kind of culture it portrays, then it was made to subvert the expectations of anybody watching it and hoping for a fun spring break crime spree flick. It does the opposite of that and prevents anybody from really having fun with the genre elements that do appear onscreen.

The ending had some of the most direct commentary, though.
Of course the main characters live through to the end in a trashy teen flick, right? They get out of the fix they're in and live happily ever after. So they do that here, too, in the most ridiculous way possible.

Going into this movie all I knew about him was the clip of him fumbling over what age he met his wife. He went saying they met 10 years ago, she was underage, to 8 years ago when she was legal.

Watched this yesterday and did a google search as to why Double J Jeff Jarrett was in this movie and it brought me to this thread. Thought it was decent, had some good scenes and some shit scenes.

Well since you bumped it, saw this on Sunday and it was ok. Didn't hate it, it's more on the like side. Vanessa Hudgens as always is fine, the things I'd do to that beautiful woman. Loved the use of colors as well, but man did Franco do a great job at his character. I could barely recognize it was Franco at times, really liked how he did care about the girls. The neon gave me a hotline miami vibe.

Some spoilers below, for those that still haven't seen the film.

Saw this with my fiancee last night, first time for either of us to watch it. We thought the first 20-30 minutes was a bit dull. I mean, yeah, it set up the story, but until they get to the armed robbery scene nothing really has happened. Some of the dialogue was pretty stupid; e.g., "it makes my pussy wet" and "it makes my boobs bigger!" Yeah, I know it was sarcasm by the characters, but it just stood out to me as kinda stupid. I'm probably reading into it too much.

I enjoyed the use of colors immensely. As others have mentioned, it had a strong Hotline Miami vibe for some reason. Guns, some funky music, and fluorescent colors will do that though I suppose. The movie definitely improved as it progressed. I'd probably put it at a solid "average, enjoyable, nothing to write home about" movie when it is all said and done. Alien getting shot so quickly surprised the shit out of me, and we were certain at least one of the girls would die. The ending surprised us all around, to say the least.
