People who make new threads just because. This usually happens when a conference occurs. GTA V as an example

Thread 1: GTA V New Trailer
Thread 2: OMG Cars in GTA V revealed discuss
Thread 3: New Handgun shown in GTA V trailer discuss
Thread 4: New hat in GTA V

Keep all that shiet in one thread.

Well if they all happen in the same time frame a mod will either merge the thread or close those who are not worth a new thread.

Not a lot bothers me. I guess I hate when OPs tell a story or something and they leave out key info and it's all vague which prompts the next zillion posts to obviously ask for the missing information and then it just takes forever to get the thread going.

Oh. I got one. Posters who make jokes in 99% of their posts. The people who do this are funny few and far between, and they rarely add anything to the conversation. What's really vexing is that, when they are trying to be serious, I still can't tell if they're joking or not.

I lol'd so hard xD

People that do this are stupid as fuck. Unfortunately I keep seeing it all the time on the Gaming side. And of course more often than not they're juniors.

Fake spoilers like this irk the fuck out for me for some reason.

Really can't stand how people completely and utterly disregard my posts simply because they confuse my tag of 'troll' for forum troll, when in actuality it refers to World of Warcraft. I can't count the number of enlightening and thought provoking statements I've spent time on only for them to be disregarded by drive-by "lol troll" posts. Le sigh...

New thread for new news!

My favorite thing ever was when a certain poster ended every single one of his thousands of posts with a tagline/signoff.

peace

I hate when people post pictures of bald black guys from daytime TV cooking shows

Every single thing I've ever encountered is that way. Also, I've been paid to write creatively and never had them edited out. Double space after a period is standard. Single space after a comma, double after a period.

When creative works are published for print, they invariably have that second space stripped out. It's considered poor typography. And digitally, most software strips it out automatically.

I'm like you, I was taught to use two spaces after every period. It wasn't until later that I learned this was incorrect—and it didn't take near as long to unlearn it as I would've thought.

It's a holdover from typewriting when fonts were fixed width and a double space was necessary. Since the advent of variable width fonts it's unnecessary and should not be taught.

When threads are made that can be discussed in the thread the topic is based on.

Example:
Thread made "gta code shows ps4, pc sku's"
Then someone makes a thread "could you wait for ps4, pc sku?"

Not really a posting habit, but still

I hate personal signatures like from the message boards on imdb, and signatures that covers at least 1/3 of my screen. Thankfully the boards I visit often nowadays no longer have such ridiculous things.

<3 neogaf

I think someone pulled a joke on your when they said periods need two spaces, because it is simply not correct. I can't believe this was ever standard or recommended.

In no workplace where writing and punctuation matters will you see people use two spaces.

I learned both in school, and I always use double spaces when writing papers so maybe I can push one or two characters onto the next page. :P

I know a lot of people who swear by one space, and a lot who swear by double spaces. Just a preference I guess.

IMDB signatures are the worst (lol the worst) because there's no separator for them, so I always end up reading them and if there's no smilies/colors I sometimes confuse them for parts of the post.

First thing that comes to mind is people who quote something and then just write 'No.' It's...kind of pitiful. You disagree? Lovely! Please try articulating it.

On a Gaf-specific note, people will 'first post nails it' for anything.

Aaaand 49th post got it again.

Yeah, I was going to post this, too.

Another one that grates on me a bit, even though I do it too: "dat [insert pretty much any noun here]"

Seconding this. Irony is horrible. Just say what you mean, trolls!

Reading this made me think of the convent in The Sound of Music.

Ironically, movable type is variable width, so single space was the standard before typewriters.

"Early Bombcast is best Bombcast" and that type of language.

Reminds me of people who use "FTW" and "epic fail" in person. Probably redditors.

--First post racing to make a pun, which usually derails the thread from the get-go.

--Posters who clearly are responding to thread titles, rather than the OP.

--Quoting giant .gifs even though it's been quoted a half dozen times directly above them.

--Thread titles that in no way describe the subject, or just tease something. Example: "Hey guys..."

--"Oh you like that thing? I hate that thing. That thing sucks."

Wouldn't mind if these things were put into the TOS and enforced in a strict manner.

That last one personally has pissed me off beyond belief so many times in the past couple of years to the point that I don't even care to post most of the time.
Especially when you do point it out and the idiots in question reply "What do you want instead, for this thread to be a circle-jerk with no real discussion?".... sigh

Yes, that's what I prefer for a thread called "let's talk about how great X was" to be instead of reading post after post of fanboys and trolls saying "shit fucking sucks!" over and over. :-/

Edit: oh and I don't know why but I hate "aw yis", hated it from the first time I saw it posted.

The word "hyperbole." This is literally the only place I've seen it used so much. Never in my life have I heard a person actually use this word, not even in the 8 or so English classes I've taken. It's only here.

On the gaming side, I hate when people post pictures of games without saying what the game is.

i.e: Games with beautiful art styles. People post beautiful pictures but never state what game they are from!

Yes, this definitely irritates me too.

It just became an inside joke on GAF because of Wario's sale/price drop threads that whenever a game has a significant reduction in price it's because it bombed.
No, it goes back further than Wario64, who is just perpetuating it. It's actually from a Brazillian neer-do-well whose name is still in the censor and whose command of the English language left much to be desired at the time.

It's just under Superkyro old as GAF things go.

I don't know if I have any criticisms that I haven't repeated myself.

Hrmm.

I don't like "imo" because it really means you want to make a statement but don't want to put any effort into backing it up (or you're afraid someone might attack your reasons or even *gasp* persuade you!) so you just fart out your dumb opinion into the ether with a "imo" tagged at the end. If anyone does try to argue against what you said, then they're the jerk for not respecting your opinion!

Hashtags and that guy who says "fellow gaffer(s)" in every post of his.

Had to put him on ignore. I couldn't bear it anymore. Try to count every instance of "good sir", "fellow GAFfer" and "my wallet" in his posts. It's impossible.

Seconding this. Irony is horrible. Just say what you mean, trolls!

I honestly thought you were trolling in that other thread:

I read these depressing threads and think, yeah, these guys are n00bs, for real. I used to be like that, lip virgin, actual virgin, and it gave me lots of depression, but now that I have kissed (1/23/2011) and "done the deed" (4/14/2011) all I can do is laugh and laugh at these threads. Guess what I've had sex. I've kissed woman lips. All my posts might be bad (dont read them), but since I've kissed and sexed I think I can safely say I've "won the internets". God bless

Woah chill down there homeslice! Being a sex-haver I just thought I'd give some useful advice. Memes and meme humor is big nowadays and if you find a way to monetize it you can make fat stacks. Humor+Financial Reliability=things women are looking for in a man. Dont' shit talk gifs.

To answer your question now that Niel Strauss's single life (RIP) is retiring the literature is sure to be wanting.
