Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | September 2013 | Token Indie Thread

Double-dipped on The Walking Dead and finished the first episode today. I played through the game on my PC so I can only compare it to the Steam version.

I have to say they have missed an opportunity using the Vita's unique control setup. You can either choose to play with the touchscreen or with buttons, but not with both at the same time, which I would have preferred. I don't like the way you look around using the touch because you don't drag your view like in most touchscreen games, you rather scroll your view and point an the direction you want to look. That's disappointing, because I think a touch interface is better for adventure games.
The Vita's automatic display dimming can also be pretty annoying considering the slow paced gameplay with many cutscenes.

Speaking about the quality of the port itself, the game looks nice on the Vita and I don't think there is a big downgrade in the graphics, but TWD wasn't a technically impressive game anyway. Unfortunately the loading between decisions and smaller gameplay segments isn't smooth so the overall gameplay kind of stutters. Gameplaywise, those stutters don't matter but they sure aren't helping the experience.

Overall, I am still happy I bought it because I just prefer playing on the Vita compared to all other devices I own and need a savegame for 400 days as well as the second season.

How does hotline miami play on vita I was looking at the trophies and i kinda want to platinum it but if the controls are shitty then I don't want to waste money on it.

Silent hill book of memories.

Is the game good? Although, even if it is good, I don't think I would be able to get it out from my mind, the weird feeling that "Silent Hill isn't supposed to be like this."

RIP Warrior's Lair =/

Huh, just checked this out, so apparently it was thrown into the abyss.

There's a Gameloft game of the sort on PSN, it's called Dungeon Something. You should buy it, I want it to be free on PS+. :p

I would if it's any good, but

Nobody should buy that game, lol. It's pretty terrible.

:(

...Well, maybe not hack and slash, since apparently we don't have any, but what about games played from isometric view? Anything good? How's Alien Breed...?

It's glorious and plays great in my opinion. Haven't tried out my Steam version though so I can't compare it.

Own the PSM version if Alien Breed and I don't like it.
There will be some top down shooters in the future though with the Dead Nation port, Assault Android Cactus and Helldivers. Maybe you should wait.

Considering how JP handles the PSP and PSOne digital libraries, I don't think they have anywhere NEAR the problems we see with this crap, especially in NA region.
I don't have a JP PSN account to prove it, but I'm inclined to believe this as well.

...which is another reason I don't believe any sort of overhaul is coming. If VTV is targeting Japan first and foremost (pretty safe assumption right now since we don't even have an NA/EU announcement!) and they don't have big issues with missing PSP and PS1 content...there isn't much incentive to change things. Sigh.

No no, I meant stuff like Diablo.

We have Borderlands 2 coming at some point, loot-city. I guess Dragon's Crown is close, and maybe the new Ys. There's a slightly more action-y Monster Hunter clone coming that might feel hack-n-loot enough, Toukiden, the demo is fun.

Dammit, it really seemed like Warrior's Lair was really coming for a while there.

Stay far away from that Gameloft game.

I have to be honest, Vitabros. I have a hard time seeing myself buying many Vita games after PS4 comes out. Unique stuff like Killzone Mercenary and Tearaway, sure, but it feels like we're moving away from that type of thing and into indie games that will be on other platforms and the occasional console port. I feel like, if I play my Vita at my house 95% of the time, I might as well just buy PS4 games and play them on Vita with Remote Play.

Essentially, I wish there were more unique exclusive games like Tearaway on the Vita. I have a massive Vita collection right now, and I feel like I probably won't be buying Vita games much at all anymore with its lack of exclusives looking forward. It used to be that I would buy multiplatform games on Vita because I love playing on that thing and not being tied specifically to the TV, but with Remote Play that advantage is gone.

Heartbreaking.

but honest, PS4 will be the new shiny.

Heartbreaking.

Haha. True! PS4 will consume me, but with it the Vita, because probably 50% of my PS4 time will be spent on the Vita. And of course, I'll be doing an in-depth video of Remote Play for my Vitabros when the PS4 comes out.

I have zero interest in Remote Play. I'm already sick of compressed videos of PS4 games and I don't even own the system yet. :(

I don't think my habits will change much either. Stuff like Rogue Legacy and Hotline Miami 2 will be played on Vita, while console ports that run at sub-native res. I will definitely get on PS4 or PS3. Borderlands 2 for example, I'm just waiting on sale to pick that up. I have no faith that the Vita version will be as good as the PS3 version.

Almost done with Little King's Story. Not sure I will ever get the plat though. Raising the princesses' affection is time consuming. I've played it for 22 hours and not one of them is at max affection yet. Plus a lot of their requests are annoying as hell to collect/complete.

And this brainy doctor won't ever show up. Fuck that guy

I don't either, but based on the fact that when Vita PSOne support went live, something like 300 games were available on Vita... I don't think they have the problem. I think all of these are "rentable" via PS+ in JP too, if I remember what nerdstick was saying once upon a time.

They also have games on PSP like Mega Man Powered Up, which we're not likely to see...

So far there is only one JP PSOne game I can't download through the Vita download list, but there is also no PS3 transfer alternative for it, so no weird inconsistencies that I can see. I don't have many games to try yet, but I haven't noticed any omissions compared to browsing on the PS3.

They have clearly made sure their Vita store does a better job at honoring your purchased content. I think SCEA is just being sloppy, and I don't expect that to change. I really hope they aren't the last say on bringing over the VTV.

I'll probably end up mostly migrating to PS4 purchases, but there's more coming out for vita in the coming months than has been announced for PS4 that interests me.

Tearaway, murasaki baby, toukiden, SSD, SS2, Freedom Fighters,

vs

Rime, resogun, MGS V

Ugh, I'm so put off on the Terrarria Vita port now. Not only is it releasing well after the iOS/Android versions despite being announced first, it's quite clear the game will be out of date before it even comes out.

Yesssss, finally able to get my hands on R1 Mercenary copy. 48 bucks, give or take. Hopefully this will be worth it!

The copy will arrive the day of the tomorrow, or Thursday, at the latest.

Agreed. Just gonna wait on the superior starbound. They had their chance for my money.

How do you balance playing both Vita AND 3DS guys? 1 game on each?

I play what I feel like at the moment but I always finish a game before starting a new handheld game. Generally, I plan ahead what I want to play and in what order. (that order doesn't always last more than 2 games though :))

...Well, maybe not hack and slash, since apparently we don't have any, but what about games played from isometric view? Anything good? How's Alien Breed...?
For hack and slash, there's Valhalla Knights 3 out soon, though XSEED compares it more to a "single player MMO" than Diablo. There's also Sorcery Saga, which descends from the same heritage as Diablo, but has the big caveat of being turn-based.

I have played some demos on the ps3 and now i'm worried.

Terraria: i like exploration, so i though that once i made a house i could have explored the world, but the world is not interesting at all imo! At night there are lots of enemies so you have to return at home anyway so you can't go that far and apparently there's no fast forward command to pass the night faster. Interface is clunky and combat is uninteresting. Am i wrong? If not i won't buy it on vita.

Diablo 3: it's passed a long time since the last hack and slash i played, i tried the diablo 3 demo with the mage and it looked like playing a shoot'em up, are all modern hack & slash like this? I understand that diablo 3 is not the best game of the genre, but it can't be that far from the others.
Anyway imo it's more diablo than people thinks, i have played only diablo 1 and while it was extremely addicting i was not enjoying at all, the diablo 3 demo was the same, i played it until the end, but i was not enjoying it.
I'm worried because silent hill book of memories, that is really barebones compared to diablo 3, has less enemies(but in the later levels they are numerous and strong!), has lots of faults and damn it's not even a real dungeon crawler/hack and slash, felt to me more hack and slash than diablo 3!

I just hardly ever play my 3DS. I'll occasionally play a game on it, but if I do, it's never for more than a day or two. Like, for instance, I got it out and played DKCR 3D a few days ago until I got frustrated with the controls and unresponsiveness after about half an hour and I was back to the Vita, lol.

It depends really. I have a massive PSP/PS1 dl library so my Vita does get more playtime than my 3DS. Apart from theatrhythm & pxz I use my 3DS solely for DS gaman (so really, my 3DS doesn't get used at all, 3 times a week tops) but that will change soon when Sernan and Pokemon drops this fall and Bravely Default comes rolling along next year. Then again, when I'm all done with Killzone, my Vita will be seeing less usage in the near future because the only thing I'm looking forward to really is FFX HD and to a lesser extent Tearaway. I might import GE2 or maybe Miku.

Overall, my handheld usage goes like

Vita > GBA > 3DS > PSP > GB

Easy. Only Animal Crossing on 3DS.

I don't play my 3DS much anymore and put most of my handheld gaming time into my Vita.
I do set aside a little bit for the occasional Nintendo or 3rd party release I want on 3DS though.

Thanks. You guys are right though... I had planned to pick all those 3DS titles I missed on but realistically it wouldn't make sense... I'm going to just focus on one title and that will be my Pokemon X.

Im not going to abandon my Vita but I feel dumb since I haven't finished a game on it except Hotline -_-
I STILL havent beat Magusar!!!!! Ughhhh!!

Sorcery Saga was inspired by Rogue. That is, it's a "roguelike"—one that even keeps tile-based movement, though it's probably not as strict about permadeath as I'd like. Diablo surely took some inspiration from the same game, but the two play so differently that I wouldn't risk recommending one to someone who liked the other.

I am suffering a bit from gaming fatigue.
Seriously considering selling my Vita, as I don't like indies.

The only reason I am holding on to it is because of Danganronpa.

GAF, is Danganronpa as good as say, Phoenix Wright?

And...vita is the cause of this? Interesting, lol.

Well actually I've played and completed that Blob game, Persona 4G, Limbo, Machinarium, Dragon's Crown and had some very long sessions with Pure Chess, 10x8, Hot Shots Golf, Motorstorm and Slitherlink (excellent game!) so maybe it is just time to read a book and put the Vita some days away.

EDIT: But how awesome is Danganronpa on a 1 to 10 scale?

Sorry if this has been posted but Arc System Works put up their Tokyo Game Show 2013 webpage, and it has some new Vita games.

soul sacrifice, dragons crown, edf2017, phantasy star online 2 ( japan only currently)

other good online games:

sonic racing, hot shots golf, Playstation All Stars Battle Royale, virtua Tennis, wipeout2048, the fighting games, killzone:merc, i think unit 13 has coop,

I'm pretty sure that only 70+ Metacritic games go free on PS+.

so yeah you'll be waiting for a LONG while

Yes, we will probably get critically aclaimed "indie crap" before that game. I really wish Diablo III was in Vita too. It's one game that I could play it lots of hours.

I think he meant Freedom Wars.

Has that game any hype in Japan? Seemed cool until they announce it was another fucking hunting game. I would have loved if the game were a true ARPG (something more like FF Crisis Core, KH, Ys or even an open world RPG). We have that genre covered and it looks too similar to God Eater.

So there is a weird vocaloid puzzle game and two hack and slash games. Do we know if they are 2D or 3D. Both are download only games, so I won't keep my hopes up.

I'm a bit skeptical since it's the original game is a mobile game, but if this is something entirely new simply using the assets, then it might be a decent game. The Vita needs an Armored Core-esque game to come out and this could fit the bill.

I haven't posted this in a while, so for those unaware we do have a spreadsheet with a list of VitaGAF PSN IDs. The link to it is hidden in email tags, so quote this post to see it!

I didn't see the mechs neither how the whip exactly works. If they are good it can be fun, but the game was released and since then the only thing we've seen is a bunch of photos.

Have you some pics or videos from the mobile phone?

I know what a roguelike is, I just find that the term has been watered down so much recently that using it tends to just confuse the discussion more often than not (people think you're talking about twitchy platformers or something). Diablo 1 was pretty much a somewhat simplified real-time roguelike - top-down fantasy hack and slash RPG, randomized maps and items, item identification, tile-based movement, etc. It and its clones evolved into its own thing over time, but the heritage is clear.

Sorcery Saga descends from the Japanese Mystery Dungeon sub-genre of roguelikes, which tend to deviate a bit from its western cousins, but it is still a top-down fantasy hack and slash RPG with lots of random loot. So (as I previously said) with the big caveat that it is turn based, there might still be something there for Diablo fans to enjoy.
