RIP Windows.

There's no way that you actually believe that bullsh....

Go figure...

That's how I would formulate it if I was in Microsoft marketing. As I'm not, I would say this is Valve preparing for Microsoft inevitably deprecating the Windows desktop, and thus the end of Windows as a open marketplace.

I'd like to see them try getting that idea past regulatory officials.

Might dump the Steam OS on my unused Mac Mini and hook it to my TV. It'll be nice to see how well the game streaming looks on a big ass TV

Why would I chose this over a PC running XBMC, Advanced Launcher and Steam Big Picture Mode?

Theoretically it'll be more optimized for gaming, as it stands now you wouldn't. But this isn't for you, it's for people who don't know what a HTPC is or how you build one.

Why would I chose this over a PC running XBMC, Advanced Launcher and Steam Big Picture Mode?

Yeah, I don't get it. Even if they somehow managed to get enough developers on board that 75% of games were compatible, why wouldn't you just run Windows where you can play 100% of games?

The streaming sounds interesting but I don't understand the hype.

Since everyone is making predictions I'll throw mine in the pile.

Half-Life 3 will be a SteamOS timed exclusive. What better way to encourage mass adoption of a new platform than releasing the most anticipated title ever on it. Valve did is on the past with Steam and HL2.

I know this makes sense and all, but there are chances that the International Criminal Court would read that as an attempt to commit crimes against humanity.

Streaming from my PC to another PC or box hooked up to a TV in my house for PC gaming? LOL no thanks.

I spent $70 and ran a 50' HDMI through the ceiling to my TV. No extra lag or image quality issues and I can choose to play on my monitor with my kb/m or my TV with a controller at any time.

Shiiiiit this is awesome. Does that mean my Win7(Steam/SteamOS) gaming rig can stream games to my Macbook(Steam)? Would be awesome if so!

So you still need Windows?

If you want to play the majority of your existing games, yes.

*Edit*

No. What you would need to do is either format your MacBook or dual-boot with SteamOS. Then you could stream from your Win7 machine to your MacBook running SteamOS. Steam OS is its own separate OS and not some app that runs on Windows.

I honestly think Valve doesn't care if you went that way. They just want you using Steam period. This makes it easier for some folks and helps them limit their complete dependence on Microsoft's OS but if you are using Steam in the Windows environment, they are happy.

Seriously, for this to attract different customers and replace consoles Valve need to have EA games.

No sports games, Battlefield, Bioware etc is a deal breaker for a lot of people imo.

On Linux it costs no $$$.
On windows it costs $$$.

Fuck Windows.

And the installers on Linux are pretty awesome. Yum yum!

lol come on man this is a terrible argument. Most everyone already have windows and upgrades are cheap, I myself have stuck to 7 but it certainly wasn't the price that kept me from upgrading. If you're building an entirely new machine as your main desktop the vast majority PC gamers aren't going to go linux regardless of steamOS or not.

I don't understand this post? you can use your current gaming PC to run it. It's the best news a PC gamer could hear. A dedicate and free os that has little overhead and uses your hardware more efficiently.

There is no reason for developers not to port to this Linux os. Valve has taking care of all the development issues by creating the tools and working with hardware vendors to make development just as easy as any of the other major platforms.

So what about when I want to do something other than gaming? What if I want to use a Windows application? I need to totally restart my computer to go between gaming and not-gaming? Why bother when I can just load up Windows and have it all right there and have saved myself a few gig of hard drive space?

I can't see any reasons for software/hardware developers to go to the expense of adopting this at all when Windows does everything they need already and more.

No it's not. On Windows I can just go to AMD's website, use the menu which will find the right file for me, download, open the executable and let it do its thing.

On Linux, if you don't speak English and aren't willing to Google shit, you're fucked. You're also fucked when you want to uninstall or update the driver (or the OS).

I would assume installing steam and games-related stuff would be pretty easy, it's probably one of the reasons for their own distribution, it come pre-packaged with the softwares required and there should be minimum troubleshooting.

One of us has a hole in their ceiling

I don't think its 'RIP windows' for gaming.

But I can see a market split happening.

This could be excellent on some fronts for PC gaming - more competition, more incentive to improve base OS management of games etc. But will also bring challenges. However if one platform is free and open, and they're easy to run alongside each other, those challenges could be kept in check.

Man, Valve just wants more control over everything, huh?

And without any killer games to make it appealing.

IT'S BEEN NINE YEARS, MAKE HL3 OR BE HONEST AND TELL PEOPLE YOU DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ANYTHING THAT DOESN'T HAVE AN ITEM SHOP.

Yep, as I've said before they should just bite the bullet and let EA do their thing with the DLC store. Integrate Origin through Steam like Ubisoft did with uPlay and there you go.

The announcement sounds interesting but I honestly don't see myself using the software since I'm happy with what I have.

This is how I feel right now... I don't get why this is a big deal for consumers.

edit: god damn bottom of the page!

I'll say. I really like Valve and their Steam setup...but HDMI + Big picture mode = PC gaming on TV with an easy interface for me already.

I guess its cool if you want to build a 100% gaming only PC...but it just seems like a nice announcement, not megaton class.

I'm not feeling the hype tbh :S I'll give it a DL and a try but since my computers are in my room and nowhere else there's no point for me really that I can think of altho the streaming thing sounds like it would be pretty useful to me but that's if I want to sacrifice a machine to install the OS on

I wonder if their games will have any sort of SteamOS exclusivity in the future?

I wonder if they'll act like a first-party developer, similar to Sony and Microsoft?

I wonder will all their games in the future have controller support? (I'm lookig at you Dota)

I'm sure not all these questions have answers

Upgrades are cheap vs. free.
