So i still see a lot of people shouting for speed runs for AK and the like. Can these still be done? If so how? Anything to cut down on the time it takes to run these dungeons since you have to run them dozens of time would be great.

Pretty much all you're gonna do to speed up AK is to not wipe and kill stuff quickly. There are a couple of things you can do in CM that speed it up (using the cannons to kill more enemies than intended), but again with that the main speedup is killing stuff quickly and not wiping.

Just picked up this game due to the amazing deal on Green Man Gaming ($22.50 with code from the blog). Downloading now, but I wanted to ask a weirdly specific question. I've never played a tank before in any MMO and I wanted to give it a try. Are the tanking mechanics easy to get into, or does the game expect you to know how that all works already from other MMOs?

As you approach level 10 check out something called "Guildhests." These are like MMO party mechanics tutorials pretty much. Unfortunately a lot of people ignore them, but between the tank class' specific quests and Guildhests, the game does a pretty good job of easing you into established MMO mechanics. For example, some of the early Gladiator and Marauder quests do have you tanking for NPCs and such, so you will need to learn those mechanics to progress.

The core game is on the "easy" side but not brainless - the lvl 1-50 story path is designed to make the average Final Fantasy player a capable MMO player. If you're new to MMOs, pay attention to the mechanics that the class quests, guildhests and dungeons are teaching you because they will apply to the late-game content.

Several Imperial soldiers that are just described by race or physique in English are specifically
Dalmasca
n in Japanese.

On the other hand, there's also the
Black Witch Shatotto
in BLM relic quests and so on, along with a bunch of obscure references in 1.0 that pointed to
Tavnazia
lying far to the east. I think it just works like FF Tactics where there's a lot of historical references hidden in the backstory without Ivalice actually being, say, FF2 or FF3 world.

It also wouldn't amaze me if a lot of cutting room floor stuff from 12 made it into 14, between how long and tortured its dev cycle was/shared staff/the crunch schedule on 1.0 and 2.0/the traditional sharing of ideas back and forth that kinda got skipped for 13.

The Shatotto/BLM stuff was rectconned into the story when Yoshi-P took over though, most of the 1.0 story itself about THMs took a 180 degree turn when he jumped aboard. Not disputing it, but a lot has changed and most of it is still just cursory stuff about other FF's. Fanservice. I like it, and would be glad to see plenty of references, but I mean we're pulling from Ivalice, Vannadiel & a number of places at once. If we do start crossing hard into other FF's, I'd expect it more in the Dissidia style rather than a hard link into one world/timeline.

I hope not though, Dissidia was sort of a clusterfuck. If we just echo into stories of another world for a FATE or something or have references to other things, I don't mind howerver.

AK as a lalafel melee. See if you can find the target/lockon circle on the mobs (If you cant see that circle you cant target that mob with a gamepad)

This holds true for anyone with a gamepad.
If you walk up to Demonwall with a gamepad or if he's right up in your face against the far wall because you guys were too slow, the camera has to be panned out before you can lock on... or you grab your mouse and click them real quick.

It's fucking terrible and causes panic, I know.

It can't be done - you have to clear out ALL trash mobs.

not all, but just about. you can skip some mobs if you don't care about some teasure chests. maybe the iron giants right before anantaboga. but someone would most likely aggro one and you'd end up fighting both anyway, so just take care of them.

you could definitely shave off some minutes though if you're slaying every single mob in the dungeon, though.

Are you playing on a console? What's your set up? Your UI seems way more manageable than what's on my TV screen (ps3) where everything seems so big

You can change the size and placement on everything in the console version, just check the hud options on your start menu, but it does look likes hes playing on the computer w/ a controller given that resolution.

You can skip right hippogryphs after the first hall, right hippogryphs and left dullahan/cultists before the first seal (can run on top of the bottom of the building wall to get brick), coin chest immediately after first boss, all dullahans on the second floor except the last (can mgs the item chest), the group guarding the second coin chest, and the two final dullahans.

It's probably best to skip as much as possible on the first floor if you're in an iffy party. More trash to build up another limit on if you've got gnat problems.

Atomos is their tool for doing anything. Just pull them from another dimension :p. As long as such things stay amusing side attractions instead of story forces, no harm IMHO.

Aye, people who don't even play get mad about Lightning, but that's hardly the worst culprit. We've been balls deep in Magitek since before ARR started now.

And just went through copperbell mines. Just hit 20, so one more step before grinding my chocobo?

Here is what I look like, been getting a few items in these dungeons, just wish they were the same color.

That answers my question perfectly. Thanks! Looking forward to digging into this game, though I wish that the servers that GAF Guilds are on weren't full.

No problemo. Ultros occasionally opens for new characters so maybe check that out first and maybe you will get lucky. Our Ultros GAF guild is full right now but we have an overflow group that we add people in from, as we deactivate inactive users.

In regards to the lore talk, if
Zodiark being the "one true god" the Ascians are serving, or direct references to Dalmasca in the Japanese version aren't direct ties to Ivalice, then it's probably just a passing connection like other things the game does.
I like the idea of FFXIV's story and lore taking chunks from pretty much every Final Fantasy game and combining it into its own unique thing.

I have started levelling Gladiator, got up to level 9 already. Might start all other classes and level them all together maybe.

You can color them using dyes I believe, but you'll be replacing them so fast it doesn't matter.

As a matter a fact, I just accepted a quest about color dying, that's pretty cool you can do this in this game.

Sadly it doesn't have much use in the later game as a lot of the gear doesn't allow it. Which is too bad. It would be nice to be able to color AF, or the horrible Darklight gear. Though, bad as the mage darklight gear is, a new color would help. Nothing is going to help the melee darklight look any good.

I'm fairly confident the Demon Wall becomes completely untargetable with a controller once it reaches the poison as the back wall blocks you from pulling out the camera and the floor blocks you from getting a sufficient angle.

Thats why you need to have auto lock on :3

This is a matter of locking on to alternate targets when already facing someone else. Autolock helps if someone hits you I believe, but if you're on controller and tanking someone else and can't lock on like this instance, then it becomes and issue to swap.

When playing PS3 in large scale fates you will pretty much never see the mob, aka Odin or Behemoth and you'll just die b/c they did an AOE attack or something. Now you'll actually see them kill you :D

Not necessarily true. Most of the time you won't see either even on PC due to the number of people at these FATEs. It's scary enough running up to try and target one and then realize you're right on top of them. Odin, not as much, but Behemoth means quickly running in the opposite direction for the more squishy fellows.

Edit: At least you can use target of target in PC if a party member has them targeted. Not sure if you can on PS3. Should be a keyboard command for it though.

Can't you just press R1 in this case?

look up and target, but why would you untarget that far back? I retarget after the bees are dead and i have to angle it up to retarget...its minor inconvenience and would rather they fosuc on other things (ie monks loosing half of their dps against demon wall)

Just a quick question in general... on story mode Titan battle... if you're playing on a laptop - just how bad is the lag?

Iv'e already beaten titan on PS3 and i'm helping out friends - and for 3 hours complete wipes. Healer dies or the DPS die. As a tank, I just sit there and do my thing and take a beating but they are constantly screaming and rage quitting about the lag...

is it that bad? is there any helpful suggestions I can make. I mean, I sit there and watch them all no move out of the hit box until it is too late. I'm screaming at my screen (mooooovvvveee) but it takes them forever. Is the ps3 that much more optimized than laptops that let's them play it?

I'm also guessing that these aren't high end laptops but they've had no issues getting to Titan...

Its not the level that dictates when you get your mount. After you join a grand company, you have to get 2000 seals for the mount. So for example I was level 22 when i got my mount.

My bard initial build is almost complete and it's been a fucking PAIN! What I aim for is

LV30 Archer (done)
LV15 Pugilist (done)
LV34 Lancer for "Blood for Blood"

Now I'm at LV27 for lancer. Can't wait to go back to wield my bow! :3

Brayflox wasn't too bad, provided that you have all party members that really know their shit (and our healer and tank were definitely on point). But the boss is definitely a test of everyone being on point. Hell, it was the first time I even had to use a Bard Song. And if the tank can't get the boss out of the poison floors, it'll regen faster than two good DPS's can compensate. I feel hella bad for getting wiped twice, but the third time was the charm for the group.

I think I'll re-run it a few times though; both for the rest of the infantry set (I'm surprised I even got two pieces of the infantry set) and for experience (not just EXP, but also how to play a Bard more effectively). Given the interaction required, I personally thought this was my favorite dungeon so far.

Does all the servers have a bajillion of people spamming about gold buying/trading? I'm in Faerie and it's annoying to open and add someone to the blacklist/report every single time I enter a town.

Yep.

Adding people to your blacklist is a tradition when logging on.

I've been trying to get THM to 26 for swiftcast for weeks. I just can't tolerate it for long.

I just blame any species of monster or character from another universe showing up on Dalamud, its aetheric disturbances, and whatever that manages to pull through the void.

Can you set a focus target on PS3? that's how I target all my bosses as the tank. Set focus, then when I got to round up any adds and see that the boss is casting something that I need to interrupt I just hit the 'target focus target' button and wham I'm back on the boss no matter if they're even on my screen.
