Beyond: Two Souls- demo impressions - now publicly available

Coming from someone who loved Heavy Rain, I really liked the demo.

Controls aren't great though and graphics seem quite inconsistent in different areas, but nothing big enough to put me off the game. For now i'm keeping me preorder.

Ok. So those who love Heavy Rain love this game. Sold. And I'm not going to play this demo since I want to experience the whole thing.

Screw my last comment, after playing a bit more I absolutely love this game. If the game delivers a great story to back up the rest of it I think it's likely that it will end up my favourite PS3 exclusive.

I already preordered this, but this just reinforced in my mind that I've made a very good decision. Really enjoyed it, and I'm especially fond of the music.

It's sad that games have actors names on the cover now.

dude... where the hell have you been? :p

Just played the demo.

Im not a fan of Heavy Rain, so I wasnt hyped for this, but wanted to give it a try. First off, it looks amazing, as in, better than most next-gen game I've seen, looks so damn real its mindblowing. The story seems to be deep and enjoyable, the gameplay is fluid, no slowdowns whatsoever.

Its amazing how far we've come with current gen hardware.

I played through the whole thing twice, trying to fail on purpose the second time to see what happened. There are no game overs or fail states, obviously, as everyone familiar with David Cage should know. :P However, excessively "failing" sequences will prompt an alternate sequence. That was neat, must mean there's a hell of a lot of scenes in this game just for people that fail to hit buttons. Like I said, while there are no actual game overs, it seems that your penalty for playing poorly is that your alternate sequence is much less exciting than the "proper" one. Example: if you escape through the forest, you end up in that crazy battle in the town we've all seen before. If you get captured, you end up inside a car, there's no town battle at all. The end result is the same though, you end up escaping in both situations, just how you get there is different. Oh and to fail you really must be playing to fail.

I thought it was all right, I'm not very interested in the subject matter though and these days I prefer to have more direct control over my actions. You can do some funny stuff with Aiden but only when the game permits you, and what the game permits you to do. You don't really have actual control or thought over the game, as in you don't really know what's gonna happen until after you press the buttons the game tells you to. It really is an interactive movie, in that sense not much different from Heavy Rain. Although at least in this demo it seemed you had less options and it was even more directed. Maybe just the demo.

My first thought after playing this was, "Wow, I can't wait to see what this dev can pull off on PS4." This game looks amazing. The part that stood out it me was
the chase scene through the forest.
Lighting seemed really good, too. I liked the particle effects when
possessing people with Aiden.
Preordered the game through Amazon after playing the demo.

If you don't need to create a game, you can put all your resources into the visuals ...

Congratulations on being the first person in the thread to try and turn it into the typical David Cage thread

Hopefully there's as little desert stuff as possible in the final game. Such a boring, overused setting in the last decade

Ice cold.

but yeah i agree, the controls are nothing special or even good. It's just button mashing just like Heavy Rain but i'll probably buy it for the story and the great soundtrack by Hans Zimmer.

Demo is fantastic. Graphics are insane. Writing and performances seem much stronger than Heavy Rain. "Gameplay" is basically the same.

I'm excited... but I loved Heavy Rain. For people who hate Cage or "games that try to be movies" I think they can safely avoid this. But for those of us who do like stuff like this... oh man that demo got me pumped.

Or in the case of your avatar you can create the same game 10 times.

Disclaimer I'm just making a similar terrible argument I don't really feel that way

Just finished it, and it's fantastic. The visuals are incredible, the gameplay is great (though controls might take a little getting used to), and the story looks amazing. I'll definitely be picking this up.

Would be cool if someone could upload the menu music on youtube.

HYPE HYPE HYPE!

Totally into the demo, biggest surprise was learning that
Aiden was in fact the player, and that the Ellen Page character had no control over it. It was really freaky during the controlled experiment scene where I as Aiden kept wrecking stuff, the doctors were yelling at Page, and she was yelling at me.

I made Ellen Page cry :(

I'm not to hype on the controls. I really like how Cage and Co. turned it down a bit from Fahrenheit to Heavy Rain, but it seems like they've gone too minimal here. It seems like
Aiden
has very limited actions, and combat with Page is way too simple-feeling. I think they could have done it w/o the slow-mo, let's see if they have that in the game.

Yup, this is a definite day 1 purchase. Demo has me hyped for October 8th.

I liked Heavy Rain and I have no idea why, cause I hate linear moviegames like Uncharted and the new Tomb Raider.

I think it was maybe because there was no pretending what it was. An interesting interactive movie with unique controls.

Looking forward to trying this.

Anyone else think the graphics looked horrible in the hospital? Looked absolutely stunning in the forest though which makes up for it though.

God damnit. I deleted my Facebook ages ago. Oh well. At least the impressions I'm reading are positive.

If you're really eager, you might be able to snag a code in the other thread linked in the OP, that's where I got my code.

controls:

very intuitive. no more directional right stick prompts, instead push the right stick relative to jodie's position on-screen. if an item is to the lower left of jodie, push the right stick to the lower-left for jodie to interact with it.

aiden controls are straight-forward. right stick to look around, left stick to move.

bullet-time fight scenes are super intense, but very very intuitive. EmptySpace can not wait to play this game on hard.

gameplay:

very varied. enemies can either be taken over to kill other enemies, or objects can be destroyed or knocked over, enemies can also be choked to death. enemies have certain auras so they can either be taken over or just choked to death.

a lot of things going on, transition to one part to another is very fluid. engine lends itself to a lot more gameplay opportunities, from straight-up melee combat to aiden gameplay to driving to just roaming around knocking things over.

overall, very intense and exciting.

there are no issues with performance. one framerate dip during a "story cutscene", where dafoe is hugging jodie as a kid.

story:

implementation of "branching story" is seamless, story pathways are formed naturally because of consequence of actions.

graphics:

one of the best-looking ps3 games, bar none. since the game uses real actors, faces are much better-looking than the last of us. EmptySpace can not understate the attention to detail and the lighting in this game.

Finished the demo. More than anything, I'm interested in the story for this game. Most likely going to be the last game I buy for the PS3

Yeah, I am not seeing any tearing at all. This game looks phenomenal.

The controls are so much better than Heavy Rain. The voice acting is also a drastic improvement so far.

Enjoyed the demo quite a bit. Premise is more interesting than Heavy Rain, controls are better too. Graphics are really impressive for PS3 hardware. I'll probably check this game out for sure, afterall I enjoyed Heavy Rain

still plays like a long QTE sequence so if you didnt like it then you wont like it now, but it certainly plays like an interactive movie, hoping to see some decision making in the game as there wasnt any in the demo.....gorgeous visuals though, although GTAV has really spoiled my expectations for animations in games, animations (probably the best in a game ever) were great but not leaps ahead like Heavy Rain was...still major improvements over Heavy Rain in everyway....
