Beyond: Two Souls- demo impressions - now publicly available

I just got the code. How big is the demo guys? Sony Entertainment Web Store is down too so I can't remote download it to my PS3 atm.

I don't understand the hype over interactive movies. I don't play games to watch cutscenes after cutscenes.

Then go play Tetris. It's pure gameplay.

Hmm, I went and looked it up and it looks like the 30-minute extra scene is only available through Gamestop? I guess I should preorder there. Hopefully the reviews are good.
In the US the SE is indeed exclusive to GameStop. The reviews are probably going to be similar to Heavy Rain, when I look at the most recent previews. Expect everything between a 6 and a 10. MetaScore probably around 85 or above.

Glad I shared that Facebook thing since so many people seem to be turned onto the game from the demo. It's always great to see people support different styles of games so we don't keep getting the same crap.
I knew this would happen. Same with Heavy Rain. You need a demo for games like this.

Holy hell the reactions here are positive. This game wasn't even on my radar until I read this thread. Also Ellen Page. But this will be the first thing I play when I get home from work.

Judging from the demo it's probably the most cinematic game I've ever played. Both graphics and gameplay are amazing, my only complain is that I couldn't see shit when she was running in the forest.

Go run on a forrest in the middle of the night. So says Mr. Pupi

who else is banking on the inevitable kotaku article headlined: "animal cruelty in beyond two souls: a hard look at how animals are treated in their pixel forms"?

Example: if you escape through the forest, you end up in that crazy battle in the town we've all seen before. If you get captured, you end up inside a car, there's no town battle at all. The end result is the same though, you end up escaping in both situations, just how you get there is different. Oh and to fail you really must be playing to fail.

where did you get caught?
because I got caught and had the town battle anyway
got caught in the forest after climbing up the cliff and ended up in a police car
I escaped the police car, stole a motorcycle and rode into town, triggering the town battle

overall I liked the demo
I enjoyed playing heavy rain but disliked the controls, more specifically the character movement
they fixed this in beyond: two souls, and the other controls in general seem better imo
the use of the analog sticks in combat is simple but effective, I liked it

I fucked up the motorcycle part because I didn't know which way to move the sticks while controlling Aiden. Yeah, it tells you but I wasn't paying attention. :(

If you fail there, you don't get the town battle.

It was fun. Loved riding the motorcycle too.

Yeah, you can also turn motorcycle light off with x and even when the camera changes to a view from the helicopter you can see that you are still steering it around and
if you stop half way before the bridge the swat guys will catch you and put you in the van. You won't even play small town sequence with Aiden. You can free yourself by controlling couple of swat guys in the van.

Nobody gives a shit about animals, so obviously there won't be any.

Demo spoilers (but related to the comment above):
Honestly I think I did far worse to the soldiers than the dogs. At least they were given the opportunity to run away.

Wow, I'm really glad the demo is getting some praise. That IGN article about the controls being broken had me worried. I'm glad they were completely wrong about that.

I loved Heavy Rain so this is a day 1 and I need to get the entire conten lt so looks like I'm preordering from GameStop.

woah, surprisingly positive responses here. i'm kind of surprised! i thought GAF couldn't wait to shit on Cage, heh.

i really enjoyed Heavy Rain for what it was, i like a movie-like game every now and then (there certainly aren't too many games like this). especially if there's lots of choices to make and tense situations. seems like this will be a game for me too. i'm kind of iffy about the supernatural aspects of the plot though... but we'll see.

The controls are easy and come natural after a short period.

That article was written after spending all of 2 minutes on the game.

Either IGN is full of shit or they played a very old version of the game. The controls were far better than Heavy Rain and made sense.

That article was written after spending all of 2 minutes on the game.

Is this true or are you speculating?

Demo is fantastic. Graphics are insane. Writing and performances seem much stronger than Heavy Rain. "Gameplay" is basically the same.

I'm excited... but I loved Heavy Rain. For people who hate Cage or "games that try to be movies" I think they can safely avoid this. But for those of us who do like stuff like this... oh man that demo got me pumped.

This post assured me of my pre order

Wait, there's animal cruelty in this game? What happens? :(

Also, how much do you think the full game's install will be?

Also also, the movement isn't the painful clunky shuffle of TWD, is it?

Me.
You find some other cops and with the help of Aidan you steal a motorcycle and get chased by the helicopter.
. Awesome part.

same thing will happen if jodie gets caught, then.
except jodie needs to escape first. what if jodie decides to wait in the police car and not move at all? that may be impossible, though.

Special edition includes:

-Steelbook
-Soundtrack
-Dynamic Theme
-Extensive behind the scenes material
-Extra scene (30 minutes long)

Costs $60 if you pre-order at GameStop. It's a no brainer really, it's free stuff.

Well I guess I'm breaking my no GameStop rule. Day 1. Preordering soon.

Wow I just tried a completely different section!

When you're
fighting on top of the train (and you can get there both through a window or the toilet), if you get caught (I did it on purpose) they lock you inside one of the wagons, then you have to use Aiden to possess a soldier, make him open your cabin and lock himself in an other
then the demo continues in the forest as usual :D

has anyone successfully climbed up the mountain wall?

Yes I did it in my first playthrough,
you get the scene where you have to take the motorbike, but of course you don't have to escape from the police car.

Btw it's incredible how many different paths are in the demo and it's not like the one when you play perfectly is necessarily the most interesting/entertaining to play.

Not to shit-post (I haven't played the demo) - the impressions here seem promising, and I am excited to play it sometime, but -

I remember the demo for Fahrenheit being amazing - there were a ton of different ways the scene could play out, and tiny things you did/didn't do seemed to have a major effect on what happened.

When the final game came out, it turned out to be much more linear and limiting than the demo promised.

I'm not saying that Heavy Rain won't be awesome, but it's probable that the final game won't react quite as much to player control, at least not all the time.

Heavy Rain already came out though. ;)

Did it deliver on branching story-lines the way it was supposed to?

I haven't played it - to be honest, after the mind-numbing ridiculousness of Fahrenheit's ending, I turned my back on David Cage. Beyond sounds like it could be good, though, and if Heavy Rain is better than Fahrenheit I might give it a try too.

fahrenheit was 8 years ago. it is okay to be skeptical, but no sense in discounting a 2013 game with the faults of a 2005 game.

Just saw some gameplay on twitch. Sold. Can't wait, love me some Quantic Dream games. I was hooked since my first hour with Indigo Prophecy, loved Heavy Rain and I'm sure I'll enjoy Beyond as well.

Heavy Rain delivered on its promises. It gives you four characters, each doing their own thing, and if one dies, the game continues without them. Heck, the game even finds a way to resolve itself if ALL four characters die. Like a rubber band, the story can "stretch" in wildly different directions, but conforms to a certain structure (I.E. the identity of the killer stays the same). It's wholly possible to miss entire scenes depending on how long you take, or how thorough you are collecting clues, or whether you win or lose fights, or escape or are caught, or how you respond to the different trials, etc. For example, during a rooftop escape I eluded police; my friend played the same scene, was captured and wound up at the police department, an area I never saw on my playthrough. Simply amazing. The only niggle with Heavy Rain is the controls take some getting used to, but they work well. Basically, you use R2 to make your character move forward, as though driving a car, and this allows you to use the analog stick to look at different aspects of the environment, at which point your character can interact with them.

I'm loving all the possitive impressions, i'm skiping the demo cause the game was a day 1 for me after the amazing Heavy Rain, can't wait. I have to hurry up and beat GTA before this is released.

I'm still convinced the writing will be awful since Cage wrote it.

That's probably a safe assumption. Either way I'm sold on the game after finishing the demo. The visuals are very impressive for a current gen title. The faces look incredible. I hope that the final build will stay locked at 30 FPS.

So I sorta take back some of my impressions after watching my roommate playthrough...its a bit more impressive than i had originally thought
You get some VERY different scenarios if you pass or fail a QTE, but they rubberband back to the same conclusion which is still kind of interesting....

Police on Train Scene
1- Get Caught- Posses poilce officer to uncuff you and sneak out a window
2- Dont Get Caught- Have huge fight on top of train

In the Woods
1-Get Caught- get put in back of police cruiser, kill cop and escape from back, then flip over a car to grab the motorcycle
2- Dont get caught- possess police officer to drive into roadside barrier to distract officers and steal motorcycle

At Police Barrier
1- Get Caught- Back of SWAT van possess driver to flip car and kill passengers
2- Break through Barrier- Huge shootout in a town

The all have the same conclusion, but the journey is different....very good way to do rubberband storytelling

EDIT: SO failing QTEs doesnt stop the story just gives you a new scenario, that might not be quite as interesting but gives the same conclusion
DBLE EDIT: This is one of those games that I like but would not like to see trending....its a good game, but I would not like a vast majority of games to play like this...same way I like F2P games, but not likeing the avalanche of making everything FTP
