Beyond: Two Souls- demo impressions - now publicly available

but isn't that the beauty of exploration? if people already knew what they were going to get before they press the button or interact with the item, then most people will just ignore a lot of those things, and that level of vagueness lends itself to surprises which players may either regret or get rewarded doing.
In a game like monkey Island you could always select how to interact with objects and characters. Do you talk to them, do you look at them, do you try to pick them up etc.
When you want to explore, then you just try every option, but if you want Guybrush to act like a real person you can do that as well.
During the scene in Jodies room I didn't want her to pick up the guitar and play some tunes, that isn't what "my character" would do at that moment, I just wanted her to give it quick glance, maybe say "I wish I could play some guitar instead"

Why not just press X to look at Objects and just press O whenever you want to pick it up? This gives me more of a feeling that I'm actually playing the character and gives me more options to keep "acting" during gameplay.

Very odd but I'M not getting any sound from the Demo. I have 5.1 headphones and figured they were borked but went back to the PS3 menu and I had sound, booted up GTA:V and I had sound, went back to the Demo and absolutely no sound.

Maybe they didn't include the 5.1 mix in the demo? Try stereo instead.

Hmm, shit don't think I can turn the headphone to just stereo. Guess I have to change the audio to just HDMI and output to the display.

Ironically while searching if others had this problem, seems Heavy Rain also had this same problem. You fixed it in that demo by turning off DTS.

played the demo last night and just watched a video on youtube I didn't wreck that room as much as you could :O but I can see this being one of those games that puts your judgement into it like are you going to play as aiden being bad or just protecting Jodie which is awesome can't wait to play it

Bloody ragin I didn't order off amazon when it was 32 for the SE now i'm paying 40 for a normal edition :/

Edit: out of stock, ignore

I never played Heavy Rain but man this demo turned me off to the game completely. Controlling your character feels sluggish and qte with sticks is not stellar gameplay for me. Plus Page's character just looks weird. It's not uncanny valley as much as I just get the feeling something's wrong.

The right analogue controls are pretty intuitive, but I feel sometimes the context isn't enough for me to infer which direction to press. Most annoyingly are the climbing controls, just reminded me of a section in heavy rain
the power plant scene
where you have to contort your hand to press 5 or 6 buttons at once. Not quite as bad here, but still a terrible way to control your character.

Overall, the story as seen in trailers isn't interesting enough, and the gameplay isn't nearly robust enough to make it a must buy for me. Still interested, but not going to pre order or do anything silly like that.

Interesting that this demo is different from the E3 one. The E3 demo was the Afghanistan part and this demo is what was inb the game's initial reveal way back when.

I went ahead and preordered the SE from (blech) GameStop. That'll be my one time a year allotment for stepping inside one of their stores.

Loving the impressions, I don't wanna spoil myself on the demo but this will surely be my last PS3 game. What a great ending for a wonderful machine.

It's probably a tradeoff they had to make in order to make the graphics look as good as they do. Also, the 21:9 aspect ratio is more cinematic, or something. lol

i don't find the graphics so incredible to justify this...it's time for ps3 to going to sleep i suppose.

I like the demo but I have to admit that I'm not used to this new control scheme. I wish they'd just ignore the QTE haters and do the QTE like Heavy Rain. I find this new control scheme to be a lot harder because I often am not sure which directions I'm meant to be pushing. I keep failing over and over again because I wasn't sure how to get out of the situation. I'm sure I'll get used to it later on but at the moment I'm struggling a bit.

I am not a huge fan of the slowmow parts in the train. Other than that it's all pretty good. Aspect ratio is my favorite. I played through the entire Dead Space trilogy at the same ratio (but I used 1929x800)) and loved how much more cinematic it felt.

Also not on facebook and would appreciate if someone provided a spare code. PM if able.
Thanks

Sounds like this game has taken everyone by surprise. I must say I've been blow away by the graphics since the beginning, but questioned the gameplay and "fun" factor. Glad to read that the game appears to have delivered.

Did you play the demo? (Asking because you asked if it has black bars, which it obviously does). It probably has the best looking character models that any game made so far has. I think the black bars are the thing that you'll forget the moment you stop obsessing about it, just as it is with any movie you'd see on the TV.

Ellen page looks at this comment with disdain.

The only thing I don't like about the controls is that you need to wait for the game to go into slow mo first inorder to press the stick (or is this just for the fighting tutorial?), should automatically cancel the slow motion and continue if you press the right direction so the scene would flow better, but I got used to it pretty quickly.

I have a 5.1 home theater setup and it worked just fine for me.

But anyway, very impressed with the demo. Went ahead and pre-ordered the game. Very heavy rain esque (of course) only it felt a lot smoother to me, with a more interesting premise.

i played the demo and sadly i don't like it at all. The graphics it's not so much different respect to heavy rain, yeah the faces are very good but it's not enough to justify the black bars. I hate them with all myself. I have enjoyed heavy rain, with all its limits, but this demo it's very limited, and you can do certain things like possession only when game wants to do. I don't like at all this limit factor in a game. Do you want to tell a story in a game ? And do you want to be like a movie ? Sure, no problem, ma videogames are videogames, so let me a vast freedom of movement and interactions. If i could play with jody and her toys, if i could manipulate every object on the rooms, or possess people when i want, and i could be free to don't follow a preset pattern well my opinion would be much more favorably. For now. from the demo, seems much more linear, "static" and on binary than heavy rain. But it's just a demo, we'll see...

And i hate black bars, i can't simply ignoring them...

Agreed with the bolded. I forgot the black bars even existed once I got engrossed into the game itself.

Is this game coming to PS4 ever?

I would say yes. QD has alluded to the "possibility" of a PS4 version down the road but don't expect to hear anything concrete as it would only cannibalize sales for their PS3 version. Also, I thought I remember David Cage saying that when they made B:TS, that the engine they created was targeting PS4 numbers in terms of poly count possible, and that was the base from which they downscaled to what's capable on the PS3.

Yeah, the Beyond engine basically features some tricks that they have got in their current PS4 engine. They worked on the two concurrently and were surprised by the results that they garnered when applying some of these PS4 tools to Beyond. If I understand correctly, the PS4 engine is a work in progress and Dark Sorcerer is an early build without all of the bells and whistles of the final iteration. Basically, it only gets better from here on out :D

I was incredibly unimpressed.

The writing was severely lacking. The acting is incredibly though. But that writing... Sigh.

Is anybody else as thrown off by the Aiden thing like I am? I literally took out an entire army. AN ENTIRE FREAKING ARMY. I'm basically invincible. I'm never going to believe in a situation where Aiden doesn't help me. I can't. It won't make sense. How can I care about the protagonist when I know she's invincible?

I'm also frustrated at how Aiden works. Why can't I possess everyone? And when I do possess, nothing really happens. You don't really have control of them, you're just pressing another button or two. I walked around when I got to the motorcycle cop, but none of the people in the town?!

I'm just very underwhelmed.

Yep, it feels like a cheat mode and an easy solution for all alternative routes in the game. I played the demo a second time and yeah, there are some different scenes but, thanks to Aiden, it all amounts to the same thing.

Why doesn't Aiden help her fighting the dogs? Well, whatever...I was standing there, don't hit any button...and she still won that fight

So yeah, the game plays by itself.
In Heavy Rain characters could die, that's a difference.

I was very curious to try Beyond but that's something that really annoys me with Quantic Dreams: they're always trying to pass off their games as movies during marketing.
No matter what they do or say their games will always remain games. It doesn't seem obvious to them apparently

I'm installing the game and will try the demo

how can anyone judge the writing when 90% of the demo is pure gameplay segments? seriously.

obviously the game is not going to be superhero jodie all the time. the goal is to not let her die, so of course aiden is going to help her no matter what.

aidden can't possess anyone anytime because that will be overpowered and will break gameplay.

There were black bars?

I'm being serious, if there were, I didn't notice them one bit.
I noticed them in the very beginning but then I was too engaged to notice them soon after. I'm all for it if it improves performance. Maybe if RAD goes through with it with The Order, it might be the best looking game ever. =P

The game had bad writting or logic flaw in some scenes (police chase ones to be exact) the police keeps shooting to kill elen in some scenes, then in some scenes they're like stop fire stop fire give up, then shoot to kill again i was like wtf make your mind already.
