Gotta say, even thinking of Famicom Detective Club as really obscure a Nintendo franchise, at least it appeared in Brawl in the form of a 2-second sound clip and Ayumi even got a trophy in Melee. Poor Star Tropics. =|

It's a visual novel like, say, Phoenix Wright or something. Go places, look at stuff, investigate things, question people, that sort of stuff. An SNES remake of the second game got a fan translation a few years ago.

I really can't get over how good the 3DS version looks. If they get that running at 60fps I'll be both surprised and ready to throw my cash at both versions immediately.

Little Mac should have already been a playable character, the assist trophy in Brawl, and one trophy in Melee doesn't cut it. Especially when PO!! has a much better sales track record than other series that have full representation.

Takeda only produced Dr. Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64, so I wouldn't necessarily call those series his. It seems that overall his games do get ignored in Smash, but Smash for may be the first to really buck this trend.

Did you... completely ignore the first sentence in favor of the bolded one? I explicitly said I think Toon Link is locked. I just said he's not going to reveal ones that are both new and locked, but ones that are locked series veterans are fair game to show off. Maybe I worded it poorly.

I should note that if Tails becomes a character (y'know, if the planets align on a blue moon while pigs fly around in the frozen-over Hell and Capcom announces a Mega Man game), I put higher dibs on him than Sonic - in that case, Sonic'd be fair game to anyone.

I didn't. I know that is what you think, but the bolded was what I think should happen. I wanted to focus on an area of agreement.
 
Fair enough. I do disagree with your assessment, though I suppose that was plain.

So here's an unrelated thought: assume Sonic's in (I mean, we kinda already do, but roll with this). What would his stage be? Green Hill's been done; try something a little different.

Personally I kind of want a stage like Eggmanland or the parts of Planet Wisp Eggman's been constructing in, with a fairly heavy emphasis on Metallic Madness-esque traps. Yeah, there's no chance in hell such a stage would be tournament legal, but I think it'd mix things up a bit, and give the other evil doctor from the third party listings a bit of the spotlight.

I don't think that Luigi and Marth will be starters, I just think that it is stupid, and that brand new characters should be unlockable instead of series regulars.
 
I honestly have no problem if SSB4 made everybody from the past three games unlockable. Stops people worrying if their mains from the past few games made it in or not and instead focuses the conversation on who the unlockable newcomers could be.

I think characters like Toon Link and Luigi will be starters this time. 3rd party guests like Megaman might be locked again, but if they're revealing veterans even before game release this time, I see no reason at all to lock them. C.Falcon and Ness were starters in Melee before they randomly became unlockable again in Brawl. There's really no point to locking these veterans that are even getting officially revealed now.
 
I still have hope that Sakurai will defy the tradition he started in favor of actual roster surprises. You can say that Toon Link is evidence that the starting roster will be different, but that isn't enough for me, it may also be nothing. Attempting to predict Sakurai's decisions is a fool's errand.
 
One of the great things about Melee was that, aside from Luigi and Jigglypuff, every unlockable character was a newcomer.

I want them to do that again.

Definitely want to see this happen again, even if the majority of them were clones, it was still fun seeing their outline and if you knew the character it was like "Yes!" and if you didn't it made you even more intrigued, which I'd imagine is how the majority of us reacted when the likes of Marth and Roy made an appearance.

I got Melee when I was 11, back when the internet was still on the up-come, and all you had were cheatbooks that came free with magazines, or word of mouth. Of course now I'm older and have access to the internet I'm bound to spoil it for myself, which is sad really, unless I simply wait until it's on store shelves and don't touch the internet, but I'm pretty sure I'll be up there when the leaks start pouring in just to see if any of my favourite characters made the cut.

Just noticed this rumor but it's more likely to be misunderstood by fan video.

Toon Link has been confirmed ion SSB4! A video also showed that Sonic and Ness might return as well.... :)
also, multiple stages were listed to be confirmed in the game: Starship Mario (Super Mario Galaxy 2), Giant Chasm (Pokémon Black 2/White 2), Pushmo Park (Pushmo), and Cookie Country (Kirby's Return to Dream Land).
