Beyond: Two Souls- demo impressions - now publicly available

The mocap is stellar. To be able to read little Jodie's emotions through her eyes and the tiny twitches in her face without her ever speaking a word are fantastic. Because of the aforementioned, the implications for the story are looking to be far grander than HR ever was, especially on a micro scale
What's even more impressive is that all the facial animations are pretty much untouched and taken straight from the mocap sessions. I have to give big props to Jodie's child actress, she really feels present in the scene all the time and despite the limited dialogue, you always know what she is feeling just by looking at her face. She really nailed that.

That's a huge bummer. Why would they regress after Heavy Rain? I liked that failing a QTE changed the outcome of said event...was a fantastic idea and one I had hoped to see them build upon in Beyond.

regress? in heavy rain there are 4 characters, so it is only natural that one character's death can be vital to the story. in beyond, there is only jodie. if quantic dream is aiming for continuity without the game over screen, then it makes sense for jodie to not die all throughout.

although that would not prevent other characters from dying, whether in the hands of jodie, aiden, or others.

that's EmptySpace's two cents anyway.

Man, I really hope this game is as good as Heavy Rain.
I loved the Heavy Rain demo but I don't think the Beyond two souls demo is a good representation of the full game. 30 minutes of interactive cutscenes and five minutes of real gameplay (where you have control over Jodie)....nah...I don't know.
HR demo was just the opposite (Norman Jayden crime scene, Scott Shelby hotel scene)

Played through the demo a few times.

First time through, I didn't care much for it. I felt like I had very little control over Jodie, and the Aiden controls frustrated me.

I then played it a couple more times and it definitely grew on me. I love the different approaches to each situation, and I was pleasantly surprised that it took me about an hour to experience every outcome in the Hunted chapter. If the rest of the chapters offer the same amount of replayability, I'll definitely get my money's worth.

Graphics and music are both phenonenal, but the sound effects are pretty weak. The voice acting is a massive improvement over Heavy Rain. Controls are much better, too.

I'm not a fan of the letterboxing though, but it's something I can grow accustomed to.

Due to the Ryse thread talking about poly counts, I started to look around for Jodie's poly counts...30K for a 7 year old console. Wow, that's pretty amazing. In comparison, I think Kratos in GoW III was only around 20K polygons.

It reminds me of Mafia 2's main menu music.
Weird. Now that I think about it I feel the same way lol Mafia 2's menu theme is the shit. Still saved in my playlist.

Looks to be a quality soundtrack. Some of the in-game music was great too, like during the
motorcycle chase.
Yup. I pretty much enjoyed all the ingame music to some extend. The action theme inside the train got me pretty pumped as well. The theme when you first control Aiden is fucking creepy in a good way. The
motorcycle
scene was just pure epicness.

I couldn't get past the weird performances and mediocre premise of Heavy Rain, but this...Wow. Really REALLY impressed with the demo. Being dropped into the train sequence as Aiden blew my mind. I'm sure most of the game scenarios will be pretty simplistic, but this game could totally be a big-budget, western answer to Ghost Trick.

Cant wait to play the full game.

I don't like it. Feels stupid.

Camera is bad IMO for the most part
Game feels clunky
Game feels like it hand holds
game allows you to many ways to avoid losing.

EDIT: music is great though. And graphics look nice.

That was my problem with the demo too. Not enough walking around, soaking up the atmosphere. As soon as the train sequence started I was like "oh yes a train to walk around in AND it's a rainy night" but nope. Hope it's not indicative of the full game. I thought the Shelby hotel demo had a great atmosphere.

preordered! great demo.

This still happens. He means you can't get a game over or end the game permanently. It works exactly as Heavy Rain.

Fantastic news. Was worried they were going backwards for a second there.

Only two weeks left, not sure when I'll have the time to play it but damn it if I'm not hyped as hell for it.

I was so happy when it was just a scared girl in a police station that was attacked by something really scary supernatural thingie.

But now she is recruited to be some super agent and she shoots pistols and is infinitely better than anyone else cuz any super hero kills 250-1000 people without stopping to think of it. blah blah

TLTR game sorta lost me

Guys, is there something else that I can do during the
police raid of the cinema
?

I think I have done everything I can think of
to stall them (blow up hydrants, flip cars, possess cops to shoot other cops, drop the sniper, open the door to the cinema, etc) but Jodie kept screaming "help me"
. Am I missing another thing that I can do?

Helicopter. It flies closer once they close in more.

David Cage just announced that there is a 2 playermode and that the entire game is controlable with any thouchscreen device. Was this known already?

I had zero interest in this game, thought it looked like shit in the gameplay videos. Then I had to do something stupid and go download the demo. Playing as Aiden is too much fun and the graphics are spectacular. I'm not contemplating a day 1 purchase damnit.

I saw some scenes that have plenty of walking, including walking around a house just like Heavy Rain.

The scene you describe is still in the game. She was never scared by it though, it was always said that the entity is connected to her. The agent thing itself is mostly about the before and after and the consequences for her life. It's not a military game at all, nor a superhero story. It's also not Tomb Raider, all the deaths make sense in Beyond and it never gets too excessive. It's not like she fights SWAT officers in every scene. There are also many child parts.

Yeah. It's not in the demo unfortunately, but it sounds pretty promising. A lot of people played Heavy Rain together.

Finally played the demo and mind = blown. Especially that last bit. And I'm sure there are other variations I didn't try yet too. Amazing stuff..voice acting, animation, visual, aiden gameplay..all top notch

edit: oh and the music!!!! So good

Just played the demo and that was intense and left me wanting more.

Amazing music.
Amazing graphics, the jump from HR to this is huge. Wow!

Can't wait to see what they do they have in-store for PS4.

Obviously much better than Heavy Rain across the board, which I still enjoyed anyway.

Damn long for a demo, too.

I didn't hear much about this game, I just saw 1-2 trailers before and didn't have much expectations for it (not even remembering it with GTA V so fresh).

But now that I played the demo... I preordered... I'm weak...

The only issue I had with the demo (and maybe something just fucked up during the installation or the package was somehow corrupted when I downloaded the demo), but near the end of the Hunted section, I don't get to see some of the special lighting and particle effects, ie the lens flare, the explosion at the gas station. The only thing I see are those black boxes, broken images link all over the place and unfortunately, this was the only moment in the game where the visuals "fucked up".

Anyone else had similar problems?

Yeah around the motorcycle section the textures/effects got all fucked up for me too so I just stopped playing. Still thought the demo was great. Already had it preordered but I'm very excited now.

jesus christ, I was just watching the EGX video of the Beyond Two Souls presentation and there's even more variation in the demo alone than i thought. Goddamn geniuses at QD. They've actually created entire scenes and gameplay sequences that flow organically within the game dependent upon your actions. I didn't even consider I could get caught on the train by the cops that come to check to tickets. Looks like everyone's experience will really be different.

thanks, will check it out.

Yes, i completed it in at least 4 different ways already.

It's basically "Heavy Rain 2.0" but without the awful controls they made for the characters.

Oh, and having to use the six-axis for everything. They put it on the right-stick for combat and other "QTE"'s but to the point where it kinda makes sense to where you can't really fail the QTE's if you're watching everything.

I wouldn't get it for $30 or above. For $5-15, maybe. It's more a "movie experience" than a "game" experince for me, even with the
AWFUL
"Aiden" bits. The chase alone is "hold forward and stumble around with the camera blocking the QTE bits you have to kinda dodge if you have black crush going on."

The issue I had with Heavy Rain is it felt like an interactive adventure. I guess that is how they can make the graphics look so good. Dragons Lair came out in 1983 and looked amazing at the time but the player had very limited control. Heavy Rain on the other hand offered much more free roaming at times but limited interactivity while still having sequences that are automated. Is this what David Cage has to struggle with to maintain emotion in his games by forcing the player down a specific path? Beyond Two Souls looks amazing but if it's like an interactive movie I might as well rent it like I did with Heavy Rain.

I've tried the first scene again and you were right - You really can scare the shit out of Kathleen. The scene was really intense - I'm not kidding, I was stricken by the general panick (Jodie yelling, Kathleen losing her shit, Nathan trying to shut down the experiment). I could have gone even further if I was faster but someone saved Kathleen just as a reddish button prompt appeared above her head.

I've felt more emotion in those 10-15 minutes than in all the other games I've played in 2013.

If anyone set up a dummy account for this demo I'd love to have access please!? I was on my birthday vacation last week and would appreciate a PM if you could do this for me/already had one set up for others. Thanks GAF.

Hated the controls, wasn't moved by the "emotional" aspects, and thought the graphics were meh. Won't be buying it. I liked Heavy Rain, didn't love it, so I didnt come to this with high expectations.

I can understand the first two points, but this? You're crazy, dude.

Not having played Heavy Rain, I didn't quite know what to expect when I tried the demo. Was absolutely blown away, Beyond will probably be a day-one purchase for me now.
