Nintendo: no harddrive and friend codes will stay.

Friend codes are the best. I love typing out that super long digit every time I add a friend. It makes me feel I accomplished something and lets me know I added a true friend, not some internet lackey I will never speak to or game with again. I hope Nintendo continues with FC for their next console and handheld. I don't want to go through the trouble of re-adding all three of my friends!!!

Should I bother pointing out that this is an NOA person they are talking to?

If Nintendo were going to enable hard drives / SD storage OR switch to a one-friend-code system, I doubt NOA would be the first to know about it.

Gamasutra quizzed Nintendo's in-house Public Relations manager, Eric Walter
Really the wrong person to ask about this stuff...
PR is in no position to say anything on the matter other than defending the current decision and they aren't in charge of company decisions such as abolishing friend codes or adding HDD support.

Bingo.

Despite what he's saying about the Friend Codes, there is still this:

We're still discussing that; we don't have anything to announce today.

Doesn't that basically mean that they'll change the system around sooner or later?

I guess hes kind of right...

It makes sense to delete stuff you're not going to play anymore. Its kind of like Steam..even if you uninstall the game, the game is yours forever.

Then again..im part of the people that delete songs when they're bored of them.

True. Just announce the Wii will support any external USB hard disk will be sweet. But highly unlikely.

Am not sure about this, if you delete a Virtual console game from your Wii, will the save game be there the next time you redownload?

The save is separate from the game so it will still be there.

I wish Halo 3 and Team Fortress 2 used the friend code system.
Oh, pfft.

If Nintendo used a single friend code for ALL online gaming, there would be few complaints. The problem isn't "Friend Codes", it's the fact that you need a few dozen to cover every game you play. There is always the chance that NCL will wise up and fix this by the time Brawl appears, but... I'm fearful.

Could we get a confirmation from anyone that BWii uses a UNIQUE friend code, seperate from both the Wii code and the Mario Strikers code?

Even more reason why what this guy says is right.. (not about friendcodes).

I do hope there is SD support though.

"peolpe like friend codes"? do yourself a favor and shut up.

They're so lucky they have Smash Bros. practically everyone I know would sell it otherwise.

It's a good thing you don't know 18 million people, or Nintendo might be in a spot of trouble right about now.

I know the GameCube's number one game was Smash Bros. Take that out and what would you have?

Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, Twilight Princess?

I'm sorry, what are you getting at?

I'm really just hoping that if there's a hard drive coming, NOA's PR head just doesn't know about it. Because frankly, this idea of taking things off when you're not playing them is just fucking stupid. At least let me play straight from SD you assholes.

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Wii "something" and 3rd party gems like Zack and Wiki.

I am saying without Smash Bros. a lot of hardcore Nintendo fans would sell their Wii in an instant and completely dessert Nintendo. And when you consider that next to last generation, when Smash Bros was the number one selling GameCube game you would think that a lot of those players would buy the Wii just for Smash Bros. irrespective.

They'd play Mario and Metroid then just sell the damned thing. Becuase Smash Bros. is Nintendo's entire online multiplayer strategy and also their excuse to be lazy with shit like friend codes.

That would not be sweet.

...except it DOES seem as though Wii sales, up until this point, haven't exactly been "folks waiting for Smash Bros.". Unless the Smash Bros. userbase dramatically grew when I wasn't looking.

They'd play Mario and Metroid then just sell the ... thing. Becuase Smash Bros. is Nintendo's entire online multiplayer strategy and also their excuse to be lazy with ... like friend codes.
I must say that I think you're being a tad unfair there... the vast majority of Wii owners purchased it for Wii Sports, and not the titles you are referring to. As far as online multiplayer gaming goes, I don't think "Smash Bros. is Nintendo's entire online ... strategy"... WFC on the DS and existing/upcoming Wii games aside from Smash Bros. seems to indicate that Nintendo's online plans do extend beyond the scope of Mario smashing Sonic into the pavement.

How is this new? Would Nintendo overnight suddenly say. "OMG guys! Like we're going to pull out some hard drives and let developers go crazy and ignore friend codes!":lol Come on people!

Whether you admit it or not, Wii is for getting together with friends in real life and family. I don't mind, I've got a ton of siblings to play with so it's not a problem. But the delete and re-download line is beyond lame. I never delete any demos off my PS3 unless they're crap, because it's fun to go back and play them every once in a while.

The friend code thing is so retarded it defies belief. I was so happy when it seemed like the Wii had a universal code, but NO, that's just the code for Mii channel and message board.

Online play on Wii feels like playing against laggy bots. Utterly pointless.

It does seem a tad unfair to base all your opinions on one game... and I thought everyone said Strikers was lag-free? I need to play it more.

You can't say that. Sure they've got a new market but Smash Bros. Melee sold over 7 million copies on a doomed system. I'm saying they're lucky because a substantial amount of those 7 million will buy and keep a Wii just for Smash Bros.

No because the GameCube/Wii have a lot to offer in addition to Melee/Brawl.

I don't know if you're right about that... if that were true, shouldn't Metroid and Zelda have sold more copies by now? Or are you implying those seven million haven't purchased a Wii yet?

I politely disagree. I think you underestimate the power of Smash Bros. and over-estimate the rest of their traditional 'hardcore' offerings in this competitive online multiplayer console world.

title is incredibly missleading.

Now that Monster Hunter 3 is announced as a Wii exclusive, there's been some speculation that this game might be the first to "circumvent" friend codes...

We're still discussing that; we don't have anything to announce today.

and nowhere do they say no harddrive in the future..

Wrong

We've seen, in the feedback we've gotten, that people don't mind the friend codes. They like them, because it keeps them playing with the friends that they do know, and it keeps their games "undisturbed," if you will.

aaaah! they always talk about friendcode like it's the one and only way to play with your friends...like if in live or ps network i couldn't chose to play just with the ppl i want...this is insane... >_<

Friend codes are pretty stupid by themselves, but they're fucking retarded since every game uses a new set of friend codes. It made a bit of sense that the DS would do it, but it makes absolutely none that the Wii relies on it.

I think they're worried about nerds jumping through the internet and raping hot chicks who, for whatever reason, think it's chic to play Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

I know I would be.

Better to assign them a number.

3237 8327 1092 1203 is totally getting it in the butt tonight.

I want to give you money Nintendo, please let me.

All I ask is that you let me boot games from an SD card, an extra 4 gigs is more than enough space for me and it won't mess with the Wii's aesthetic either. Its a simple thing to do and, at the very least, means I and many fellow GAFers will give you more money. Remember, money is good.

A friend code isn't the problem.

Friend CODES are.

Actually, the fact WFC is featureless, un-integrated, slow and separated shite is.
