I can't stand THM/BLM. This is weird because I've played a mage of some sort in pretty much every game ever, but making mana management the primary mechanic of a class is just tedious and un-fun as hell to me.

*will probably still grind it out to level 30 at least*

It becomes a lot more involved as you level up.

At level 50, this will likely be your standard rotation [when CD's are up]:

Thunder III --> Fire III --> Raging Strikes --> Fire I [until Mana reaches around 300 or so] --> Swiftcast --> Flare --> Convert --> Fire I --> Blizzard III --> Thunder III [if you need to re-apply your Thunder spell] --> Fire III [when Mana has been regained] --> <repeat>

There's other stuff to it, as well, but that will likely be your basic rotation to start a fight or when CD's are up. I usually wait until the second round of rotations before I use my CD's, though, but it depends on how good the tank is at gaining Enmity.

The basic rotation [outside of CD's] is virtually the same:

Thunder III --> Fire III --> Fire I [until you reach around 600-700 Mana] --> Blizzard III --> re-apply Thunder III --> Fire III --> Fire I ---> <repeat>

Of course you use your Firestarter/Thundercloud traits as they come up. Prioritize the Firestarter one over Thundercloud, but don't cancel out your current cast to use them.

I don't want to be the 10,000th person asking dumb questions about Darklight gear, so I'll just ask: is there any darklight gear I should avoid (because it is quickly and easily outclassed by something else)?

Avoid? nope.

Starting upgrading with jewelry is not a bad idea. AK armor is more easily to come with than jewel (which only one AK jewel drops for run) and it can be a big jump on stats depending of you current jewelry.

I'm on Ultros, name is Adiri Highwind. Dont know if there are still invites going out, but if there are I'd love a hook up, Chilling in a friends FC until then!

Got level 14 tonight. I loved the beta, and I'm smitten with this. Archer currently, and I made a Roe female, but I think I might go tank. I love how easy it is to switch classes!

I'll post some screens when its not 4:30am of my hawt behemoth lady!

I'm on Ultros too, and not in the gaf guild. I sure do see them all the time though. I wave or salute anytime I see one.

I had to block two guys from the GAF guild spamming about selling gold today =\

With attribute points, are they permanent on my character? as in, I put 4 points into DEX as my archer, then class change into a Lancer, is my dex still there?

Ugh, the amount of negativity on the official forums is disgusting.

Going by the things I've read the game is doomed to fail because there's not enough content in the first fucking month.
Don't sweat it. The official forums have been like that since the beginning of time.

Attribute points are shared between your class and its job, but if you switch to an entirely different class you get a whole new set of attribute points.

Lol, well they have like 520 members. I'm sure a couple bad apples got through. :P
Those are likely members that had their accounts hacked/stolen.

Don't worry, they do not remain in the guild long before they are removed. It's sad to see, but we cannot have that!

To those in the guild, I'd advise you to get a security token [either physical or digital] for your account. It definitely helps secure your account and allows me to be at ease regarding it.

Just finished the main story yesterday, and I'd like to get some Myth tomes before the week is up, but in AF gear I'm not sure if I can survive the trip to AK yet.

You can run it AF with GC accessories and belt with little to no problems. If you are worried about gear in particular, you can run Wander's Palace, but tbh, I have yet to find a reason to actually go there.

There's always CM runs too for additional tomes to help with that grind to DL.

Doing AK runs non speedrun is by far the most mind-numbing thing...
Having to do 8 a week isn't terrible, but Christ...

I did six on Wednesday and the first four were ok with running with a new tank in one. The last two though were fantastic only because we ran with two ridiculous dps (Gizu and Puppy) and literally tore through it. Had a bit of fun here and there too by the end of it all. I'm just glad I don't have to go back there again till next week. It can get boring easily. At least it's not as bad a CM though.

That's more involved, sure, but it doesn't change the fact that the way you play the class is by standing still in one spot and spamming spells based almost solely on how much MP you have at any given time. Now, to an extent this is innate to MP using caster classes, but THM/BLM takes it to an extreme with (seemingly) no real other options. Using WoW as an example (since I expect it will be the one most familiar to people), while, both Mages and Warlocks have had builds which play similarly (Arcane Mages being probably the closest analog), they also have/had other builds/play styles which are way more interesting. THM/BLM, on the other hand, really does not.

Just went through Thousands Maw. All these instances so far have been really easy. The scorpion boss at the end was tedious, but really it was just go after adds that pop up from the eggs. And I saw nothing but caster drops in there.

Brayflox is pretty challenging but Qarn where it really gets hard IMO.

http://neogaf.guildwork.com Go ahead and register(and link up to your lodestone! Its neat!) and then fill out an application. Just mention that you want to be put in the linkshell, cause yeah gaf is full atm. The website is awesome as can be. And I'm sure it'll be easier for maple and the other officers to notice you then making a one off post in this thread.

A friend of mine wanted to run the first dungeon together this weekend, but I'm not sure how far I am from it. Just got to CNJ level 15 and I'm about to do the Guardian Tree quest...do I still have a ways to go? I couldn't remember if you had to visit all the cities and listen to their boring speeches before the first dungeon or after.

You have to unlock it by progressing through the main quest first. I forget the order in which it goes though.

The first dungeon is level 14. And yes, it's after you leave your starting city (otherwise players from the other two wouldn't be able to access it).

I will agree that a bit of...variety would be nice, or at least, different ways to play the class.

While you don't need to use the exact rotation(s) I posted earlier, you'll still be doing more-or-less the same [same usage of spells, etc.]. I don't personally mind it, since I'm having fun with the current method, but I can understand where you're coming from.

Gah...I'll have to do all that tonight then. The voice acting in those speeches! -_-
I switched to Japanese VO/English subtitles the second I hit the title screen.

I never looked back.

Until Relic, WP has the best possible PLD shield at ilevel 55 green. Still, that's not enough consideration to give up myth tomes and higher ilevel gear from AK.

Fake edit:

Okay, Titan, really, but by the time you've cleared HM Titan, you basically have Relic. And there's the ilevel 70 crafted shield, but no one is making it/costs too much.

I had gil to spare so I think all of my accessories are lv 45-50ish. I'll keep it in mind.

For what it's worth, the Japanese VO track isn't much better than the English one (though Alphinaud does have a decent VA). There's also some scenes where there's background dialogue which doesn't have on-screen subtitles, so it's really not a clear winner over the English track.

Apparently lots of people are getting suspensions for investigations if they have 8 figure gil.

Some high level crafters are pretty upset.

I'm famous!

8 figure gil?
err, i hope items does not count on that, i've got 2.5m cash and 100+ Potash\Peacock Ore >_>

Oh shit you can do that? Wish I had known before I did most of the story stuff.

Yeah it's in the Sound Options. It's kind of tucked away, but it's there!

Thankfully I've watched quite a bit of anime so even the words that weren't subtitled I understood the majority of it.

While the Japanese VO could be better, at least it wasn't grating on the ears as the English VO was. It probably helps that I always view things in their original language [whether it be movies, anime, etc.], so when given the option I always choose to. :)

Yeah, I kept it on JP voices too. But it's far from being the clearly superior option, so for people who aren't sticklers for original language tracks and are finding the EN voices to be terrible (which they are), switching to JP may not actually be an improvement, all things considered.

Yay! Finally got around to it and had my first dungeon party as a tank in Satasha. Used duty finder and played with some polite people. I wiped twice on the boss, and they kindly told me about the "Limit Break" and I set it to the hotbar. Third time was a charm and we won. So far I enjoy soloing but partying looks like quite a lot of fun. I haven't done any since leaving my PLD in FF XI years ago. I guess I was a little anxious and kinda scared to pt with randoms after hearing all the horror stories about jerks. But I think I was probably reading too much into the really bad accounts, when it probably doesn't represent the population as a whole.

That'll only get you to 3m, added to your 2.5m only puts you at 5.5m.
You should be plenty safe unless you get another 200 of those and sell them.

I've had some really nice groups in duty finder. Like, we all sit around for five minutes after the boss talking and wishing we were on the same server. It's like leaving camp. There are some not so good groups too though.

Where do you even get Peacock Ore? I've heard it sells for a nice amount of Gil.

I'm guessing you need a Level 50 Miner to retrieve it, though. I'd best get to work!

From my experience, people are quite friendly, helpful and polite until you get to the dungeons that appear in your late 30s and beyond. That's when you start to run into more people that have elitist attitudes, and are quick to berate someone who makes a mistake.

Much thanks to the GAFers who taught me the Ifrit HM fight and ran it with me a couple times. Hopefully we can group up again, since I figured GAFers would be more willing to pass the SMN book to me despite playing a DRG in the fight lol.

Fight was tons of fun :o

So where's the best place to farm fates when you're level 37?

This is my personal fate range guide.

1-12 - Just do hunting log and nearby stuff.
12-20 - Aleport
20-28 - Quarrymill
28-35 - Costa Del Sol
35-42 - Coerthas
42-45 - Mor Dhona
45+ - North Thanalan.

When the average level is 16, you know the people moaning about lack of content are just the vocal minority.

I have a hard time believing 16 is the average level. It takes 4 hours tops to hit 10 and not much beyond that to hit 15. If you can't do that in a month are you really playing?

If I recall correctly that is one of the items you can buy with philosophy tomes. I think they are all 125 tomes. Some give you multiples of the item, some only one. You buy them at Revenant's Toll.

They people buying from them have tainted Gil. If that tainted Gil is in your pocket, in there eyes you're just as guilty as the person who bought it.

Can you explain to me how you rationalize that? What the fuck is someone supposed to do to prevent that? It's not like they're marked bills or that there's even a way to prevent individuals from buying your stuff on the market board

The problem with their method of determining the average level is they include all classes.

So let's say someone decides to level one class to 50. Well, in order to get their job they have to level another class to 15. This would mean that for one person with a level 50 job - their level to S-E is 32.5 I'd really be interested in seeing census statistics that don't include 'every' class someone has leveled.

That isn't the way they are doing the bans.

There is a suspected ceiling around 8m Gil in which they are placing a 72 hour ban on all accounts. During this time they are investigating for RMT. If none has taken place, you should be unbanned.

I have a level 50 bard, and three level one classes unlocked, a level 16 pugilist, and 25 lancer. 50+1+1+1+16+25 = 94. 94 divided by 6 is 15.7 so I guess that is the math they are using to determine "average level". The bard is the only one that I would consider a real character. All the level one classes that people unlock are bringing the average way down.

If I was one of the ones affected I'd be calling asking for an extension of my trial/game time. Ridiculous that they're putting temporary bans on characters just for having reached a certain amount of gil - not to mention it's during the time most people have to play the game (the weekend)

Fortunately (unfortunately?) I hate crafting/gathering and therefore am poor

That makes sense. I have all classes unlocked, but I barely have any leveled but my 50.

Oh, thanks. Good to know!

If I weren't focused on getting Darklight gear, I'd probably buy/sell some. However, since I am...

Goodbye Gil, I hardly knew you.
