Wii U Firmware Update is live everywhere. Everyone calm down.

You guys really think that they wouldn't have let you play using the gamepad if it was possible? We don't even have homebrew that allows the gamepad to do anything with Wii Mode.

This thread is unbelivable. Someone should quote the few dozen all caps posts reacting followed by that image.

Well, it was the only thing that came to mind for me, because I don't understand how the alternative is supposed to work. I guess the Gamepad acts like a tiny little TV? So you set it up on a desk in front of you and then use your Wiimote and Nunchuk in the cramped space between it and you? Seems extremely awkward. You'd have such a tiny little range of motion for any games that required the pointer.
I played Pikmin 3 with the Wiimote, which is an extremely intensive pointer game perfectly fine with the gamepad sitting on the cradle that comes with it sitting on a TV tray in front of my chair.

Guys, all this update does is have the console output a video signal to the pad and lights up the pad's IR strip.

It doesn't make the Wii innards suddenly detect the pad as if it were a Wii remote + CC. Because it's different hardware that doesn't work the same way and would probably cause all kinds of weirdness.

I mean, is it even the same type of bluetooth communication?

the gamepad isn't Bluetooth at all, its a proprietary wi-fi

I would have liked being able to control with the gamepad, but it'll still be nice for playing things when the TV is taken up. Not necessarily remote intensive games, but things like Xenoblade.

I imagine you might to to buy a small dongle to put in the bottom of the Wii Remote to allow the Gamepad to read it and be used as a controller. That could be a solution.

Hey! That's really useful when you want to do split device multiplayer and everyone wants to use Wiimote controls!

Well, https://id.nintendo.net exists now, so that's cool. One step closer to a "true" account system (it's been an account system for a while). I hope that this update allows the Pro Controller to work as a Classic Controller Pro in Wii Mode.

Ofcourse you have to use a wiimote. This is Nintendo, they're not gonna map all Wii games to the gamepad.

"Of course you can't play your Wii games on the gamepad screen. This is Nintendo, they're not gonna support Off-TV Play with the gamepad."

You think the Wii interprets the pad as a Wii remote? Like, wirelessly it identifies itself as a normal Wii remote with a CC plugged in?

It doesn't detect it at all. It's a different piece of hardware. It can't suddenly be spoofed for the Wii innards to think it's a remote.

What about...Oh, I don't know...being able to play Wii games on a tv stead of on the game pad to begin with?

Anyone made a full summary of this update? is it just the off-tv wii games or is there more? I assume theres that speed boost to the OS?

Repeating (I just assumed this was obvious) - Wii games still require a Wii controller (Wii Mote etc) to function. Only the image is played on the game pad - you can't use it to control the games directly.

-USB Keyboard
-Wii Off TV Play (still requires Wii Motes!)
-Surround Sound support for Wii games (Dolby Pro Logic II)
-Access Friend's List from Wii U menu directly
-Upload screens taken when pausing the game directly to blogs and forums using the browser.
-Option to receive automatically downloaded software from Nintendo.
-Wii U Chat via headset connected to the Game Pad
-View PDFs on the Browser.

Ok. We need to talk about this. It basically means Nintendo can automatically push demos to a system, right?

yeah, it shouldn't be that difficult. I mean the console in Wii-mode is clearly communicating with the gamepad already. They just need to make sure the gamepad bluetooth stack can talk to the Wii-mode bluetooth stack and have the gamepad spoof being a Wii remote. Or modify the Wii-mode bluetooth stack so that the Gamepad looks like a Wii remote with a CC to the Wii. that's the beauty of software.

EDIT: wait.. the Gamepad doesn't use Bluetooth? *sigh* nvm.. it'll be difficult..

Yup. They said the same thing for Wii and 3DS and never really did it... hope they take advantage here.

Also, how has no one mentioned the secret MEGATON? There is a SLOT MACHINE LOADING ANIMATION in the eShop now. DROPPIN' BOMBS.

Given that they're not adverse to hacking through Wii mode video display to the gamepad, I am really surprised there's not classic controller emulation mapping for the buttons on the Wii U gamepad.

Sure, you cannot change Wii games that require a wii remote, but *plenty* of Wii games have CC and CC Pro support and can be played entirely with those.

But the classic controller has to be plugged into the Wii Remote and I assume it's only changing there the sound and video are sent, which is different than making the Wii running on the Wii U interface with the Gamepad as a control device.

At least that is my assumption.

Harp on Azak. That dead horse isn't bruised nearly enough.

Believe me. So long as Nintendo continue to make decisions of this kind and completely mis-allocate resources and misunderstand their main consumers - those that own a Wii U now - I will.

I happily give credit where credit is due, but Nintendo have yet to do much to earn any in the last year.

Coming up 7s!

Of course it's possible. You can fix pretty much anything with coding.
Sure, but this isn't exactly trivial. The Wii IOS expects controllers to be connected via Bluetooth - the GamePad doesn't use Bluetooth. vWii IOS doesn't even see the network adapter used to communicate with the GamePad.

I dunno about you, but HDTVs are getting pretty damn thin, and the one I have can't balance a sensor bar above it (let alone a Kinect...)

fits fine on mine which is pretty damn thin (a 2012 40 inch Samsung 3d smart jobbie) and while yes thinner do exist, I doubt the percentages of people that have thinner is above the lower single digits

Friend list icon is now on the main menu.

The actual menu might be slightly different but I don't know what it was like before so maybe I'm hallucinating

Did they integrate messaging with the Friends app? Annoys the hell out of me that I need to go to Miiverse to actually send a message to a friend,

There's a cool loading animation in Miiverse too, where it shows what time it is all around a little cartoon world adorned with Miis...
