Also, I really hope this update doesn't break Wii homebrew. This had to require an update to the vWii software, right?
I played Pikmin 3 with the Wiimote, which is an extremely intensive pointer game perfectly fine with the gamepad sitting on the cradle that comes with it sitting on a TV tray in front of my chair.Well, it was the only thing that came to mind for me, because I don't understand how the alternative is supposed to work. I guess the Gamepad acts like a tiny little TV? So you set it up on a desk in front of you and then use your Wiimote and Nunchuk in the cramped space between it and you? Seems extremely awkward. You'd have such a tiny little range of motion for any games that required the pointer.
Guys, all this update does is have the console output a video signal to the pad and lights up the pad's IR strip.
It doesn't make the Wii innards suddenly detect the pad as if it were a Wii remote + CC. Because it's different hardware that doesn't work the same way and would probably cause all kinds of weirdness.
I mean, is it even the same type of bluetooth communication?

Guys, the summer update is still coming
please understand
Ofcourse you have to use a wiimote. This is Nintendo, they're not gonna map all Wii games to the gamepad.
I cant imagine the numbers with the sensor bar below tv is anywhere close to half
You think the Wii interprets the pad as a Wii remote? Like, wirelessly it identifies itself as a normal Wii remote with a CC plugged in?
It doesn't detect it at all. It's a different piece of hardware. It can't suddenly be spoofed for the Wii innards to think it's a remote.
Repeating (I just assumed this was obvious) - Wii games still require a Wii controller (Wii Mote etc) to function. Only the image is played on the game pad - you can't use it to control the games directly.
-USB Keyboard
-Wii Off TV Play (still requires Wii Motes!)
-Surround Sound support for Wii games (Dolby Pro Logic II)
-Access Friend's List from Wii U menu directly
-Upload screens taken when pausing the game directly to blogs and forums using the browser.
-Option to receive automatically downloaded software from Nintendo.
-Wii U Chat via headset connected to the Game Pad
-View PDFs on the Browser.
I imagine you might to to buy a small dongle to put in the bottom of the Wii Remote to allow the Gamepad to read it and be used as a controller. That could be a solution.
Friend list icon is now on the main menu.

Yup. They said the same thing for Wii and 3DS and never really did it... hope they take advantage here.Ok. We need to talk about this. It basically means Nintendo can automatically push demos to a system, right?
Given that they're not adverse to hacking through Wii mode video display to the gamepad, I am really surprised there's not classic controller emulation mapping for the buttons on the Wii U gamepad.
Sure, you cannot change Wii games that require a wii remote, but *plenty* of Wii games have CC and CC Pro support and can be played entirely with those.
Kickstart this.
Harp on Azak. That dead horse isn't bruised nearly enough.

Also, how has no one mentioned the secret MEGATON? There is a SLOT MACHINE LOADING ANIMATION in the eShop now. DROPPIN' BOMBS.
Is OS performance improved? that is all I care about
Sure, but this isn't exactly trivial. The Wii IOS expects controllers to be connected via Bluetooth - the GamePad doesn't use Bluetooth. vWii IOS doesn't even see the network adapter used to communicate with the GamePad.Of course it's possible. You can fix pretty much anything with coding.
I dunno about you, but HDTVs are getting pretty damn thin, and the one I have can't balance a sensor bar above it (let alone a Kinect...)

The actual menu might be slightly different but I don't know what it was like before so maybe I'm hallucinating

yeah, it shouldn't be that difficult. I mean the console in Wii-mode is clearly communicating with the gamepad already. They just need to make sure the gamepad bluetooth stack can talk to the Wii-mode bluetooth stack and have the gamepad spoof being a Wii remote. Or modify the Wii-mode bluetooth stack so that the Gamepad looks like a Wii remote with a CC to the Wii. that's the beauty of software.
the gamepad isn't Bluetooth at all, its a proprietary wi-fi
