Wii U Firmware Update is live everywhere. Everyone calm down.

Devolution is working. Just had to revalidate my discs.
It's forcing 4:3 now, so I don't see a way to do widescreen anymore. No big deal, it was hacky anyways.

Thanks for reporting this. Can't say revalidating all my discs sounds like fun...

Nope, it shouldn't be too late. However, make sure that you update both system's firmwares before you proceed. I know the Wii recieved several updated after the Wii U launched and hetherto.
Thanks for the tip! I'll do the 'Wii to Wii U switcheroo' this weekend!

Could someone run Sunspider and any other browser benchmarks that work with the new update? I want to know if they finally got Javascript performance better than smartphone level.

Disappointing you can't use the gamepad for Wii games that actually have classic controller support. Still it is nice to be able to use the Wii U gamepad as a second screen to play Wii games if you are in a situation where the TV simply isn't useable. Though this might be only really viable when it comes to virtual console games and other Wii games that use the classic controller. Even though you can use the Wii remote you likely have to be really close to the gamepad. It on a table right in front of you or in your lap. It might be more comfortable sitting that class using the classic controller. Going to try it out with The Last Story tonight as I watch something else on TV.

Does this update increase the speed of the OS the way the past update did? That's really the most important thing and what I was looking forward to. Well that and folders.

It returns faster to the Main Menu. Loading screens seem to be faster as well, specially eShop and Miiverse for me. They are also new. There is even a mini jackpot game when the eShop is loading. Very neat.

Feels snappier, but I don't have concrete proof. Youtube is working fine on the Browser now. And you can upload pictures from the Browser as well.

Ran a few before/after stopwatch tests on this October patch. Seems loading times have indeed been improved on official apps/functions:

Settings: 20 -> 9 seconds
Returning to main menu: 30 -> 21

Daily Log: 12 -> 9
Miiverse: 9 -> 7
eShop: 22 -> 16

Youtube app stays the same at 7 seconds to load - but then most people use the superior internet browser for youtube anyway =) It's getting better - Nintendo have been busy bees.

Hmm...anyone else got this? ("Error Code: 160-2719")

20131001_1912012sunb.jpg

It came up while exiting ("close software") Zen Pinball.

Tried looking-up the error over at Nintendo support site but it's not listed.

Update went OK btw and played a couple of titles since then, with no probs.

Hope it's something random and not specifically v4 firmware-related.

I'm quite surprised it's still not any better, I wonder when they will update the webkit engine to the many new releases.

These days, smartphones are starting to near 400ms...

So Dolby Pro-Logic II for Wii games works through the HDMI output, right? I assume I don't have to change any settings to get this to work, but it's automatic if "surround" is the selected output mode in the main Wii U settings.

Dolby Pro Logic 2 support for Wii games? Aw yeah! Still playing through Skyward Sword and Last Story so it's gonna be nice to finish em with surround.

If this is the big 'summer' update, it's kind of disappointing.

Adding HDMI + Other for audio is great, but should have been there from day one. The Wii on the GamePad is cool, but it just gives you a tiny screen to play on and you can't use it comfortably with just the GamePad for VC and others. You still have the stupid process to get into the Wii mode.

The game boots are definitely faster, but it still takes around 15+ seconds to go from Settings to the Wii U menu.

Still no folders.

No account system.

So we got a slight boost in menu, some cool half-baked features...and that's about it.

Oh, joy - I'm reading my work documentation on my game console, and posting game screenshots on my blog. I'm a perv.

ps: the pdf reader ain't half bad.

At this point I believe they are holding out features so any hacked old firmware (if it exists) will not be complete and updating would mean losing the hacks. I remember one group anouncing they had hacked the wiiu right?

sorry if old!

noticed because of: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=84182855&postcount=5388

edit: oh my .... of course this has been discussed JUST a few posts earlier :D hahaha

It's funny how the numbers don't agree. The new one says 1171 and the top right says 1174. It's pretty useless as we have a progress bar anyway but I guess this can give us an idea as to the speed of the download (Time to drop 1MB for instance).

Overall it's a pretty sad update after so long. Hopefully there will be another big one soon. I'm surprised people are experiencing speed ups everywhere. To me it all seems the same except from the time I hit my login Mii to the time I see the tiles. That seems a bit faster, or should I say, less latency.

In the last few weeks I've gone back to using my phone for browsing as it's just so much more responsive. There seems to be some sort of major lag on the Wii U browser. It gets to almost finished loading, then pauses and eventually finishes.

These little updates to the Wii Mode make me warm and fuzzy.

Even if they are small things (putting Pro-Logic back [which costs them money, no?], fixing the aspect ratio thing), it shows that Nintendo still cares about backwards compatibility. If they're willing to keep tinkering with it, maybe they will eventually find a way to get Game Pad and Controller Pro support linked to Wii's Classic Controller input.

I have a feeling they're putting out stuff as they finish it, instead of holding it all back for a massive update. There's really no reason to have the monolithic updates of 360 yore anymore, and I imagine the PS4 and Bone are going to have piecemeal feature adds in this fashion.

Hey guys, I have a question for you. The firmware update seems to have broken my Wii U.

I can't get sound out of my TV. I have the system hooked up through HDMI and checked the settings to make sure it's outputting audio through HDMI, but I'm greeted with neverending silence.

Any ideas?

Do you have small children? If so, check the volume on the tele.

Sorry, can't help
.

K guys, gonna try The Last Story and see if it's still going to be plagued by slowdown, but man, that silky Sylvia smooth NMH2 framerate is tempting me to go ahead and finish it.

The Wii offscreen update was a nice suprise, forgot all about that being a possibility. Very useful to me, although its annoying it seems you require the TV to be on in order to boot up the Wii menu which is a pain, when the point of it to me is so I can play Wii games if my brother is playing something else, so not so great if I need the TV as well to access it.

Also, I dont suppose any UK-ians forgot about this also... From the friends icon being added to the Wii U menu.... I remembered that TVii icon there... still as pointless as ever and not talked about for a while...
I wish Nintendo will either talk about/add it already or just get rid of the icon, whats the point of having an icon there I cant use.

If I update will I be able to bring my home-brew channel across with the import option?
Only got a WiiU a week ago so completely out of the loop just want to get my region free on the wii side.

Set video output on the WiiU to component.

Just played The Last Story using Wii mode: Seems the more significant frame hiccups have been smoothened out since the update. (I know for a fact that the tiger scene in the beginning using to make things come to a crawl), but nothing so far has been uber dippy like I recall.) It helps too that the loading screens are somewhat brief thanks to the Wii U's disc drive.

By no means I am saying it's always a constant perfect 30fps, but for the most part it runs smoothly enough that I even forget I was testing the thing and before you know it I finished one of the subquests.

How does it compare to a regular Wii? Better or worse?

(!) You do NOT need to do that! (!)

If you do the instant-Wii-Mode boot while you're starting up the Wii U, it goes into Wii Mode without requiring the TV to be on! If you happen to already have the Wii U booted up, just turn it off and turn it back on and hold B during the splash screen. It's way way easier than turning the TV on.

I really need to make a Wii U FAQ thread with all these things nobody realizes they can do...

Are you sure about that? I unplugged the HDMI cable from the console to try it, and it asked me for a TV connection, despite me pressing the B button.

The b button shortcut still doesn't work. It throws up an error message and says the Wii U needs to be on the TV screen. You have to turn on the TV and switch to the Wii U input to get it to go to Wii Mode.

You must not have the TV output set on HDMI for this to work

It was there from day one, at least when in Wii Mode. They then removed it with a later firmware update. Now added it back in and also made it work in regular WiiU games.

You know you can go boot straight into Wii Mode by holding down B when the console starts? That feature has been there for a while.

guys, please: what about YOUTUBE? is it working now?

YES

3 videos already and im fine here. Long videos, short videos, no problem.

Really? Since the update, the majority of the time, all I get is the Sorry, this video is not available on this device error, if I try to play videos directly from the youtube page(using the browser).

It works 100% if a gaf post, for example, links to a youtube video. The video is embedded in the post and I can simply click the play button. Seems like it's working fine for everyone else.

So was there no speed bump for the front end UI in this one? I thought that's something that was coming.

How did you come to this conclusion?

There is quite a noticeable one:
