US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

I think Darrell Issa summed up Obama's role in all of this very well.

Asked whether it was appropriate for Obama to head to Asia if the government remained shutdown, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said, “What do we need him for?”
“I think he's nonessential personnel myself because if he won't negotiate, what do we need him for? He wants to golf, let's be honest,”
There would need to be something to negotiate on for him to negotiate.

This "slimdown" thing just goes to show how bad the rift in the GOP is. They're talking out of both sides of their mouth. On one hand, they talk about how the shutdown is a terrible thing and place the blame on Obama and the Dems, then the others from the party are saying "oh it's not that big of a deal, in fact the gov't is still running it's just running more efficently."

Bohner tells republicans he won't let the government default. This is actually a thing. I'm taking a stand you guys, we're not going to destroy what's left of the American government just to prove an ideological point, cuz that's NUTS

I wonder if the brakes on their crazy train even work anymore.

That's what I don't get. Just how dumb are some of these people. It's just a slimdown, it's not that bad! LOOK AT HOW TERRIBLE OBAMA MADE IT THE VETS CAN'T GET INTO PARKS

That's what the Republicans do. That's the only way they get votes.
hey thats not fair they are pros at gerrymandering too. McConnell and Pauls needs to keep playing over and over on all the news networks. I know it won't help people are sticking to their guns and burying their heads in the sand but it would make me feel better.

Give me some advice guys.

After contracting to revamp my kitchen, my contractor decided to instead tear out the cabinets, the sink and floor, then left the job. Obviously, I wasn't happy with this work stoppage, so I demanded he finished what he contracted to do. You wouldn't believe what he said in response. "I'm willing to negotiate. Why aren't you?"

What should I do?

NPR doesn't produce a whole lot of purely editorial content. It's more along the lines of the tone of their reporting, which I think has gotten a bit more pointed in the past couple of days.

Also, I'm on my phone, which makes posting them a hassle.
I think it only seems pointed because, realistically, one side is being completely unreasonable. Unbiased coverage does not have to make both sides look equally bad.

It's sort of the same reason you won't see them talking against global warming or evolution.

I don't know, both sides sound at fault here.

Cnn: Obama tells crowd "Only one way out. It's my way."

My President.

This really is the tl;dr of this address

I will rely on this gif as many times as necessary until this is all over.

Obviously you should give him the rest of the house as tribute for promising not to burn it to the ground.

You forgot the part where the Contractor is holding a match to a molotov cocktail that he's ready to toss into the house.

Breaking: Reid rejects plan endorsed by some House Democrats to repeal health-care law's tax on medical devices. http://on.wsj.com/ShHjC6

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) said repealing the tax would set a dangerous precedent heading into the debate over extending the federal borrowing limit.

“The hard right says ‘see, by holding a gun to their heads, we got something what we wanted. We’ll up the ante this time. So it’s not the specific proposal – the device tax doesn’t seem like that much of Obamacare – it’s the method: we’re going to threaten and shut the government down until you agree with us,” Mr. Schumer said. “You can’t call for that legislative blackmail or it will get worse and worse and worse.”

Welp that's that.

I have to say in this case I agree with the Democrats holding strong and not giving in to strongarming by the Republicans. With that said, I have no idea where all this is heading, especially with the debt ceiling coming up.

I worry about what's going to happen if the current issue doesn't get resolved by then.

Another part of me though wonders if the Democrats shouldn't give a tiny bit ... at this point I think the Republicans just need an "out" no matter how trivial it may be.

You know the democrats need a new Lyndon Johnson or someone similar in congress that will get the democrats to grow a spine and a pair of nuts.

Under no circumstance should ANY legislative compromise over the budget be made. None!

The idea that some democrats are entertaining the idea should have a bunch of fellow congressmen on their way this moment to their offices to slap some sense into them.

Even if you disagree with the medical device tax this is not where you go about it.

Maybe after they give a tiny bit, they should give a tiny bit more and then a little after that.

I love this quote and agree.

Some of sports guys I follow on twitter says that soldiers overseas can't watch baseball playoffs and football due to the shutdown. A soldier tweeted this picture

On my base a lot has been shut down.

-no more reserves working with us, which means more work for civilians and active duty
-commissary is shutdown, our on base grocery store
-education office is shutdown, i cant finish the process on my degree i was working on
-mail services down, no more delivery. you have to go pick it up from the building instead of your mailbox.
-movie kiosks are gone, they are pretty much red boxes
-tv/cable are gone from the fitness center and other buildings.

probably more i don't know about

this with the upcoming default, if somehow this results in even a minor recession and spirals everywhere, than somebody gotta pay for this shit..Like seriously, someone needs to be held accountable

Lyndon had many faults, but he was the fucking political master. Would make you do his biding and get you to think it was your own idea.

Johnson knew his way around Congress, sure, but the reason why he got so much done was because of huge congressional majorities.

Let's not fool ourselves here.

Sounds good, we should make that permanent

Whose fault is that? Nobody forced them to take an untenable position and look like idiots.

If they need a win, they should impeach Ted Cruz.

Republicans already tried that with a CR. What you reacted to isn't anything new.
This is the first time that a group of democrats have endorsed surrendering to republican hostage taking and it undermines democratic leadership's insistence that they won't negotiate. This just emboldens the extremist Republicans.

Ugh. Please no green laternism in this thread.
I don't think observing that the modern Democratic Party in many ways has failed to draw hard lines and at times play hardball is a problem.

Historically you can point to a number of democratic congresses and leaders that knew how to work their present day media, fellow congressmen, opponents and the American public in a way that could nullify a lot of their oppositions arguments. I used Johnson merely because he is the most recognizable in recent history.

Do people really think Harry Reid is a great democratic leader? Or that democrats as a whole have handled the media and messaging well in recent times? Their great campaigners but not great day to day with the messaging or with nullifying the opponents dirty tricks.

Present day democrats seem to be reactors to the narrative set by their opposition and day one compromisers on any and all major legislation, bending to the opposition instead of having the opposition bend to them.

look at how he twisted Wallace into requesting federal troops in Alabama.

President Barack Obama said:
There will be no negotiations over this. The American people are not pawns in some political game. You don't get to demand ransom in exchange for keeping the government running.

Man, he is one heartbeat- one crooked deer-in-the-headlights look from a Tea Party darling- away from saying "The President of the United States does not negotiate with terrorists."

It's all I want to hear now.

Who the fuck is this Harry Reid. Did we switch him with a guy who actually has balls?? Were was this Reid when we were talking about filibuster??

I think he's really fired up about this because he's mad about what went down in 2011. He's not repeating that again.

Oh man, this is exactly what I've been wanting to hear from him.

You mean besides voting for the medical tax device in the House? This doesn't change anything.

No, but misleading posters – especially those who are not from America but are interested in this political development – about the time Johnson served as president is a problem.

...that doesn't refute my point.
