OS X Mavericks was officially announced by Apple during the company's 2013 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote, held on June 10, 2013.

So with the GM released here it finally is, the OT for our new OS X.

As of its beta release, OS X Mavericks is compatible with all Macs that are capable of running OS X Mountain Lion.

The full list of compatible models:
  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)
The models must also have at least 2 GB of memory, 8 GB of available hard disk space and Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or higher in order to install OS X Mavericks.

The following is a list of features that will differ from previous releases of OS X:


  • Improved multiple display support: The menu bar and the Dock can be accessed on each display; Apple TV can be used as an external display.
  • Mission Control has been updated to organize and switch between Desktop workspaces independently between multiple displays.
  • Finder enhancements, including tabs, fullscreen support, and document tags.
  • Added new iBooks application.
  • Added new Maps application.
  • Calendar enhancements.
  • Safari browser enhancements.
  • iCloud Keychain sync.
  • Notification Center enhancements.
  • Some skeuomorphisms, such as the leather texture in Calendar and the book-like appearance of Contacts, have been removed from the UI.
  • Timer coalescing, which enhances energy efficiency by reducing CPU usage by up to 72 percent.
  • App Nap, which sleeps apps that are not currently visible.
  • Compressed Memory, which automatically compresses data from inactive apps when approaching maximum memory capacity.
  • Server Message Block version 2 (SMB2) is now the default protocol for sharing files.
  • LinkedIn sharing integration.
  • OpenGL 4.1 Core Profile.
  • OpenCL 1.2.

Mavericks seems to have boosted my Macbook Air's battery life. With Mountain Lion and 100% charge I had 11-12 hours left, now I have 13 hours.
 
Awesome topic Flek! Based on the time I've spent trying it out, Mavericks has really impressed me. It feels like a Leopard->Snow Leopard or Lion->Mountain Lion, if that makes sense.
 
Sea Lion would've been more appropriate, since it's essentially Lion Part 3.

And then start calling the next version something California-like, you know, beginning of something new, since it's probably going to be the iOS7ification of OS X.
 
annoyed, but expected that they move iPhoto Places from google data to apple maps.

POI data is shite and the little pin is super fiddley to place.
 
I like Mavericks pretty well. I have no need for the maps and ibooks apps but I appreciate the finder tabs, better multiple monitor support and notice some of the tech improvements. specifically better battery and RAM compression improvements.

And using Calendar is so much nicer now.

I’d expect it to be around $20 to $30 when launched.
 
Mavericks? So eventually it'll go rogue and we'll need to send Mega Man to shut it down?

I always knew Apple was using Wily tech.
 
I recommend a wipe and install over a upgrade. Ran into some minor issues and solved some problems I didn't expect to with a clean install.
 
I'm most excited about the memory and CPU improvements they are making. All the other stuff is just bonus for me. Performance, performance, performance! Although I won't be getting it launch because I know there will be a bunch of issues like there was with OSX 10.8. I'll probably wait a month.

Any idea of the price yet?
 
Yep. Not much changes from DP8. Some Skeuomorphism still exists. And apps are still not consistent between their iOS and OS X counterparts.

I am hoping 10.10 is the big change for OS X with things being completely streamlined between OS X and iOS with the UI looks and the way things work together. Shame it'll be a year away again.

We spoke the other day about having the menu toolbar on both displays. Magically, with the fresh install it is only on one display. I'm still not sure of the cause or reasoning.
 
The removed linen is great, but then I go to Game Center and am like OH GOD NO.

They seem to give so little shits about Game Center I'm surprised they actually made it in the first place.

I'll have to try it out myself. Maybe it was a last minute change for the GM.

Nope. I still have a menubar on both. Mine was an upgrade from DP8. Though I am using an iPad with Air Display which currently doesn't seem to work right with Mavericks. But it does show a menubar on my second display. (I'll test it with an actual display later maybe.)
 
My calender is visually different now as well. Having done hundreds of upgrades and installations, never saw anything quite like this.
 
Is there a firm release date? I'm still on Lion and have been waiting forever for this, especially with XCode 5 requiring ML or higher.

Seems like the least significant OS upgrade I've ever seen. Tent pole features are basically free apps. Dislike the way computers are having phone features retro fitted onto them. My dad will probably get this anyway.

This is how computers and phones should work. It took forever for us to get to this point. I am so happy that I can take my notes on my computer and have them on my phone and tablet. Or my reminders or calendar. This is how technology should work.

Oh don't get me wrong, I appreciate seamless syncing. And I love Chrome to phone but do I really need a maps app on my desktop? I see further socialisation of the desktop as a distraction. Perhaps it can be used well in certain settings but I think a lot of people see their phone as the place to do stupid, fun stuff and the computer is where you get work done. I am imagining getting Game Center and Facebook style notifications on my desktop while I'm trying to work.

Yeah, that's basically how the current mirroring works on an Apple TV. But I imagine it might be useful for displaying apps/information where speed isn't critical.
 
Will be upgrading to this from Snow Leopard. I've been rather apprehensive about letting go of spaces, but it looks like there's enough stuff now to coax me to upgrade. Should be fun.
 
Never MIND! I fixed it. Kind of a backwards way of implementing a simple setting that should be in displays.

Turning that off will revert the dual display mode to how it was in Lion.
 
Just did a clean install on my Dev machine (had been dual booting) and man, feels great compared to my image that'd been suffering all the beta releases layered atop one another.
 
Maps and iBooks are pointless. Besides that the dual monitor display think is fixed. So yay?

Also finder never opens new page in a tab? :/ it just opens a window even though i selected the correct option.

Unless there is a secret feature, this feels a lot smaller than snow leopard.

How does the GM/betas run on a 2009 Macbook Pro? Mountain Lion wasn't running as fast on mine compared to Leopard and Snow Leopard. Lion was okay.

That's "open folders," not "new windows." Have to switch mentally to Cmd+T for new tab instead of Cmd+N. I agree that that option is dumb because it's almost never relevant and that they should just open everything in a new tab no matter what.
 
I'm excited about the upcoming Macbook Pros. I think it's obvious they're delaying them until Mavericks comes out and all the battery saving features in Mavericks will be of great benefit to them.

Every succeeding OS should ideally run faster. Again, if your HD, RAM, and CPU are shit...then it's going to be a bad performance.

I'm assuming that is the Core 2 Duo, so it's going to run about as good as that processor can in 2013.
 
I ordered a new iMac BTO to the Apple Store, pick up is listed as Oct 11th right now.

so when it's released in a few weeks, I will be able to upgrade for free right?

I don't really use any of Apple's apps but the behind the scenes stuff sounds nice like Compressed Memory, App Nap and Timer Coalescing.

Fair enough. I upgraded the RAM, which helped a little.

Otherwise, it just feels a bit bloated.
