People really underestimate how big of a jump the 3D models are though.

Can you imagine this type of animation:

For all 700+ pokemon?

Ok, this is news to me. This will probably be the longest week of the year for me, isn't it Oct 12 yet?!

For all 700+ pokemon?

Yup, I can imagine that very well.

Not only have there been tons of side games in the series with many animated Pokemon, there's also a ton of ways GF can get the 3D animators they need to do that.

More than 1 mewtwo just seems weird to me. He's a enhanced clone of mew right? People just like hey let's churn out some more mewtwos. Damn these things sure do love caves.

Well that will be fun with the super training being ingame. Everyone can train up things.

Oh right, forgot about that!

EDIT: Yeah I really cant wait to see how everything looks with the new models.+ animations. Seeing Pokemon in 3D was cool for the consoles, but these animations are really detailed.

How long do stores give you to pick up your pre-order?

I'm working 11:00-8:00 on Saturday the 12th...although, maybe I can swing by GameStop late? Are they open that late? Also, do you think I could pick it up after midnight on Friday?

Does anyone know where in the game you can catch a Litleo? I wanna be well prepared to catch two of those and use one for a playthrough.

Not all the Pokemon might have a cool stat screen animation. That image is from the event Torchic we get day one, so maybe they animated it for that special purpose (it also knows a move or has an ability that is unique, I forget which).

I can understand the tremendous amount of work it probably took to animate 700 Pokemon, but they have experience doing so with the Stadium games so it's not like it's something totally new.

Fairy doesn't seem to be a huge factor like many people believed. How many of those fairy Pokemon are true powerhouses? I think retyping someone like Blissey and Gardevoir will have a bigger impact than any of the new fairy types.

I'd be perfectly fine with them cutting down the number of legendaries, I agree that they were kind of getting out of hand, especially in Gen IV. The problem is they skimped way too much, with there only being 3 legendaries obtainable normally. They also skimped on things that are pretty much expected at this point with every new gen, especially an even one, like having at least 100 new Pokemon and TRUE evolutions .

It almost seems like they ran out of time and just planned to add everything through DLC and events that they couldn't make on deadline because of the long in advanced announced date.

I don't doubt it's a lot of work to make 3D models for every Pokemon, but it's not like they haven't had a base to work on at all. The 3D Pokedex was released almost 2 years ago (IIRC) and that has good 3D models for all Pokemon up to Gen V, which I'm sure they used as a base to start with. Also, I don't think an extra 30 Pokemon would have destroyed them since they'd already gotten that far.

I feel like this discussion might be better suited to this thread, but in any case...

Hopefully the 3D model work will indeed pay off in future titles, and I'd say the engine itself is more a testament to the game being rushed if what we've heard about the 3D and frame drops is accurate (don't see why it wouldn't be).

There could still be a legend or two that come(s) after the main trio (like Cresselia in Gen IV), so there could be a neat surprise.

But I think the Mega Pokémon were GameFreak's way of adding "new" monsters that don't necessarily contribute to the 'Dex number, and given that only one can be used per battle, I can see how people might have mixed reactions to that. The fact that Sylveon is literally the only "real" evolution from past gens does stick out as odd (even if Sylveon itself makes sense to celebrate the Fairy type), and maybe we'll see a higher total again after we cross the 3D hurdle. Who knows?

I think they're still doing a lot of cool stuff in this gen though (see: Aegislash) and Megas can breathe new life into some old Pokémon... though I'm not sure why some of them are done in the place of straight evolutions (such as Mawile).

Isn't it too early to proclaim if fairy type is going to be a powerhouse or not?

Also of course they have experience in making 3D animated pokemon, but does that negate the fact they this game is going to have a ton of really good ones? I do agree that there might not be many on the same level as torchic, but also, who knows?

Also it is something entirely new for the mainline games, Do you remember how shitty the animations for B/W are? These are on a whole new level presentation wise.

So I was just chatting with my Smogon pals about the base stat ranges of Zygarde and Mega Mewtwo Y.

<&JibaNOTHERE> Base stats for Zygarde:
<&JibaNOTHERE> HP: 96 - 112
<&JibaNOTHERE> Atk: 90 - 105
<&JibaNOTHERE> Def: 121 - 137
<&JibaNOTHERE> SpA: 81 - 97
<&JibaNOTHERE> SpD: 87 - 102
<&JibaNOTHERE> Spe: 95 - 110

YIKES, that is not good at all. It's actually worse than Garchomp... that is a total disaster for a third mon legendary. The only way it can be redeemed is with an amazing movepool :(

As for Mega Mewtwo Y's exact stats...

106 HP /150 Atk /70 Defense /194 Special Attack /120 Special Defense /140 Speed

OH WOW. 194 SpA makes Mega Mewtwo Y a biiit weaker than LO Mewtwo... but that's okay. It isn't getting worn down by Life Orb, AND it has freaking base 120 SpD. I think this means that after one Calm Mind, Scarf Palkia can't even 2HKO it! The 140 base Speed is cool too I guess but it doesn't really help you outspeed anything extra besides regular Mewtwo. Also I gotta admit, the base 150 Atk... I have no idea what to do with that lol. The only real issue is the base 70 Defense makes it more vulnerable to priority.

I'd say Mega Mewtwo Y is probably better than Mewtwo in most cases when it comes to offensive sets, BUT because you can only mega evolve one Pokémon per battle, regular Mewtwo will still totally have its uses!

Zygarde is going to gain a new form in the third version/sequels.

At first glance, doesn't that suggest that we'll see a Kyurem type situation with Zygarde, in the sense that it's a candidate for a stronger forme in a future entry? That's a shame if its normal forme isn't too hot though. It looks cool.

And holy crap at Mega Mewtwo Y. Legendary Mega Evolutions look like they could get pretty crazy.

Do we know anything about Xerneas yet? I'm guessing it's defensive based on Yveltal, but I don't remember seeing a stats screen.

Yeah, I was interested in Megas at first but looking the leaks, it seems like all it will do is power creep the hell out of Pokemon that don't need it and rob permanent evos away from the mon that would benefit from it. /vp/ is calculating a near 800 BST for Mewtwo Y, and that's just ridiculous.

Mega Evolutions are specifically meant to be Uber class, so yes they are powerful.

Yeah I assume that Zygarde is another Kyurem situation, but to be honest I thought the Kyurem situation was awful in the first place, we had to wait around 2 years for Kyurem to be worth it =/.

As for the power creep of Mega Evos.. honestly, for battle spot (the new name for GBU) and Ubers, I think the whole one Mega Evolution per battle sorta balances it out. Plus, choosing your mega evo could be a pretty interesting new layer to team building! In Ubers case, there will be plenty of teams that justify a different Mega Evo over Mega Mewtwo Y, the weakness to priority and other team angles means that its not like its going to dominate the Mega Evo selection, its just going to be a great option!

So how many legendaries are available in X or Y? I'm assuming version-exclusive legendary, mew two, and one more?

Edit: Zygarde? Wow it's ugly.

Yeah, it's probably just my initial disappointment at the number of Pokemon, lacking variety of types, and no real evolutions that kind of have me down about the game. I don't doubt it'll be amazing when I play it, and some of the Pokemon that are there are already some of my favorite ever (Aegislash and Skrelp family), but I still can't help but feel somewhat disappointed about some aspects.

Like you implied though, this generation was probably GF's "trial" gen as far as learning how to do Pokemon in 3D and that the next generation they'll be on the ball since they'll know much more about it, and give us everything we could have wanted and more. Hell, people are still playing through the game so maybe there will still be some surprises hidden in there that have yet to be found.

Ew, Zygarde looks incredibly lame. Is that the supposed "Z legendary"? That means he's probably going to play a big role in the sequel(s). What a shame.

Not going to lie here, I'm pretty underwhelmed with most of the designs that have been leaked. And I'm usually one to defend the newer Pokémon.

Only Mega Jolteon with Pin Missile can save us!

I'm interested to see what online battle restrictions there will be. Will it only be non-legendary 3v3? Can we do 6v6 WITH Legendaries? Maybe a no Mega Pokemon restriction? I hope they put in a lot of options.

So much for balancing the game, Masuda.

All he and this team did was give power to already over-powered Pokemon...

Mega Evolutions will probably just appeal to anyone 10 or under just like how they like to abuse Legendaries in battles.

Why doesn't Nintendo just make a console version for once? They want the Wii U to sell, don't they? Pokemon sells units!

I hate Nintendo for this. I'm just here for my Pokemon fix, at least until the next Ni No Kuni comes out.

The type distribution for the new Pokémon looks a little off from a glance (though at least we finally saw some new combinations for the starters' final evolutions). I haven't spoiled myself on the actual Pokédex though, so I'm assuming they've balanced things out this way.

Diamond and Pearl may have had a higher number of new Pokémon, but man were they ever slow going (Surf especially, but the battles too) and that got better on the DS. I'm guessing we'll see the same effect on 3DS too!

So, the /vp/ leaker apparently has run into a situation where he's blocked from going further and he's being told to find a character who isn't in the place he should be...

A bug?

http://www.polygon.com/2013/9/19/47...ches-up-the-classic-story-formula-to-focus-on

"The series was built around the idea of trading Pokemon, trading these creatures, and everything we designed about the games was based on that concept," he explained. "That trading aspect was also to promote communication between people, and really, you need the handheld to be able to go places in real life, meet people, easily trade and battle with them. I think that's the reason we designed them on the handheld; it's really important to Pokemon."

Personally I'd much rather be playing a mainline game on a home console but can't win them all.

A bug?

Probably event related. Someone also noted that a character asked the player to show him a Genesect. YEAH I'VE GOT A LEVEL 11 FROAKIE LEMME WHIP OUT MY GENESECT.

No, I mean he's being blocked from progressing through the main game and being told to talk to Clemont (the 5th Gym Leader) who isn't where he should be.

But none of the other leakers/reviewers ran into such a horrible bug, so I'm guessing he's just not doing something right. And there's no one to ask for the leaker, lol.

Z legendary looks alright. With those base stats it will definitely get another form in the Z version of the game.

Disappointed about the legendaries though. I've caught those three multiple times. I knew Mewtwo would be in the game but taking the place of something else original doesn't sit well with me.

Shiny Xerneas is just red? Doesn't work with all those multi-colored horns.
Zygarde looks pretty neat. Really should have been Poison/Dragon though. Maybe a Mega Evolution...

But sheesh, everybody new and old are turning into dragons. So little time for Jigglypuff to kill them all...

Xerneas is truly jusT the best legendary since Lugia. Not sure why anyone would choose Yvetal over it tbh (unless it's about masculinity.. chh)
