If every Pokemon was being designed to be a series mascot, then yeah, they would have failed. But a lot of them are based on puns or folklore, like Klefki being based on a trickster myth or Binnacle being based on kaiju. They do a lot more with design in relation to folklore than they do popularity.
I'd agree that anything they've designed to be "cute" since Gen 2 has largely been a miss in my eyes; Dedenne's hideous looking. All the folklore inspired stuff has been pretty spot on, especially with the Norse pantheon they developed.

Garbodor is trash, sentient trash to be exact and it is very damn well representing the goal of its design. But people dislike it because it is ugly.
I agree with that. The cutest Pokemon for me are not those cutesy Pokemon which employ large round eye, small body with big head or the electric rodent, but rather Joltik. I hope Game Freak take similar approach when they designing an actually cute Pokemon.

I don't get why people decide before they have the game and before only a handful of people have played (none competitively) what's viable and what isn't...

About 2/3rds of the entire collection of Pokemon are available in X/Y. There's been Pokedex lists throughout the thread.
This is awesome news. I wonder where its mega stone is?
One of the Elite 4 uses a Chandelure, so it makes sense.

Well... Ghost is x2 against Ghost.
It's called common sense, really. You can only target yourself or your opponent in singles and since it's a ghost move, it's likely that ghost pokemon learn it, which makes yourself an irrelevant target. And why would you want to add ghost to your opponent? Now doubles however...

If used right you can use it to dodge attacks or boost attack power in double battles but its too situation to be all that good.
For simplicity's sake, a list of the Pokémon NOT appearing in X and Y would be useful.

Well that explains Mega Chandelure. One of the E4 has Chandelure. But is this true? It would seem simple enough for one of the leakers to revisit the E4 and take pics of the other alleged Mega Evolutions.
Ghost moves are super effective against ghost. So there's that.

If that "one Mega per E4 and Champion" rumor is true, then the Mega Evolutions would be Probopass or Scizor, Chandelure or Torkoal, Altaria or Druddigon, Starmie or Gyarados (latter confirmed), and Gardevoir (confirmed).

Yeah, it's pretty gross how Game Freak is giving preferential treatment to Pokémon that are already powerful. I will literally boycott the game if Mega Scizor exists but Mega Jynx does not.
