Has there been any gaffers who came back from a permban?

I want PantherLotus back :(

That said, I was warned that my next ban is going to be a perma. I don't think I've done anything perma-worthy...

It's happened from time to time. Sometimes a perm will be reconsidered after a discussion among mods, or if new information comes to light. Sometimes someone is accidentally junior permed when they were actually just rejuniored to stop them making threads, and the ban will be changed to temp as soon as someone spots the error. Sometimes we'll let an alt account slide (usually grounds for an insta-perm) if someone has clearly made an effort to become a better poster.
Whoa! Interesting

Does GAF hand out non-permabans (temporary bans that aren't permanent)? I was under the impression GAF works on a one-strike policy.

I've been banned twice, but of course in my humble opinion I thought they were for pretty weak reasons. They ended up being a couple weeks each I believe.

So, in theory, if I were to be banned tomorrow, and felt that my ban was unjustified, who would I contact? Is there even someone to contact?

I never even thought it was possible to be unbanned. I lurked here for years before registering, never wanting to take the dive because I can have very controversial opinions at times, and thought a ban was basically inevitable.

You would email support@neogaf.com.

Whoa! Interesting

To be clear, this isn't official policy and it doesn't happen often.

I was banned only once, and that was for 2 weeks. Stupid post by myself.

I'm a changed man now. I can't even imagine if I were to be permabanned, what I would do

I would pay money to undo a ban. Here's 10 let me back in unless I was posting warez or illegal things.

Some of the bans are way too long for the content you're banned for.

And you can't look up what you've gotten banned for. I've gotten banned twice and I've already forgotten what they were for. You can't look up others bans to see what they got banned for either. It's all a really dumb system.

Whoah.
Never knew this. Now I'm kind of scared.

Yep. I know that I think *very* carefully as a junior before saying anything. Yes, the rules are pretty clear, but I know I've looked at banned accounts and wasn't able to point to any particular post and say 'yeah, that's why so-and-so got banned'. It took me long enough to get my account approved, I don't know if I could take it if it got taken away... :)

Yup, a bunch of people's got unbanned after a certain mod started throwing out perms for any perceived sexist statement. After the mod in question got unmodded, a lot of the bans were reversed, as I recall.

I dont think so. I was banned earlier this year, and I'm here. BTW, I was never given a reason for the ban. It just said, "maybe you should think about how you treat your fellow posters" or something like that. Posting habits haven't changed. I think someone with clout narc'd on me for being "rude".

Wait, are we completely free to talk about the circumstances of our bans? I thought I remembered reading that this wasn't something we weren't supposed to discuss, but I just re-read the ToS and other FAQ threads and I can't find anything to that effect.

What happened to his name? Why is he PhoenixPause? Is it because he is always banned and therefore his account is "paused"?

Because he asked a moderator to change his username.

GAF does not, and never could employ enough moderators to ban each and every offensive or even bannable utterance. Getting a temp. ban for rudeness/disrespect is one of those things that does somewhat depend on the mod you encounter (if one is reading the thread at all) and the relative content of your post. Getting banned isn't like the violating the verbal morality statute in Demolition Man and in reality, even complete jerkass comments generally don't get reported by users since reporting isn't a built in GAF function.

He's a decent poster IMO and an interesting voice in a number of topics.

I think, and PD can confirm this, but I think this name change was against his will.

Sometimes the banned person had his/her avatar disabled, sometimes not. Can anyone explain why?

This is clearly a thing that happens, but I wouldn't be able to tell you why. It's not connected to the length or reason for the ban. The urban legend that perms mean no avatars and temps keep their avatars is not true. I suspect it has something to do with the user group settings related to avatars, but I wouldn't be able to tell you. Every ban, temp or perm, involves switching someone to the same vBulletin user group.

ahahah well I guess that's confirmation

A mysterious phenomenon that not even the mods understand...that's something.

Maybe the board itself have a will of its own.

He trolls a lot but his genuine posts (in race threads in particular) are some of the best I've read on here.
