Llamasoft announces new Vita project TxK (based on Tempest 2000)

I played T2K on an actual Jaguar today at AusPAX. God damnit, it's such a good game. I find it funny that there is so much slowdown/frameskip on something that doesn't seem like it'd push the Jag that hard, but it felt good to bring the thing to it's knees, just like with most SNK/Neo-Geo titles ;)

From Jeff Minters twitter.
Holy christ. Hook it straight to my veins.

On the positive side, it not only sounds like he's got the hang of developing for the Vita... but he's making massive progress with it. So awesome.

I have a Jag hooked up to an old TV in my garage with T2K in it. Love that game.

Looks like Dyad was also inspired by Tempest 2000, is this gonna be like Dyad? I hated that game.
It's gonna be like Tempest. If you haven't played 2K, even playing the original will give you some idea of how it'll play.

I've played it on a Jag emulator as well as it's various re-releases (PC and I think either the Saturn or PS1 versions?) but honestly, I just want something that plays it exactly like the Jaguar one does, slowdown, .mod soundtrack and all. I don't recall any of them doing that :(

If that means buying a Jag solely for that one game, so be it. I wonder how much they're going for these days... it was just so much damn fun.

I know its probably just a generic sound effect, but that shooting fx sounds remarkably like the one from tempest.
I haven't watched them yet (stupid, shitty broken internet) but I wouldn't be surprised if he uses largely similar (if not identical) samples. He has a pretty good habit of "borrowing" (I'm not sure to what extent, but it's amusing as hell)/being inspired by sprites from well-known games.

Hey, for one of those videos, does the movie player expect it to go for 8 minutes but it only goes for 10 seconds?

Just got this via email:
This year once again Llamasoft is pleased to annouce that we will be present
at the Replay 2013 exhibition in Manchester on the 12 and 13th October.

As usual we will have a variery of Llamasoft games old and new. Additionally
you'll have a chance to see and try a pre-beta build of our current work in progress:
"TxK" on the PS Vita.

So if you can make it to the exhibition, look around for sheep, oxen,
goats and glowing neon webs suspended in virtual space and when you'll find us you'll find TxK too.

More info about the Replay 2013 exhibition can be found at : http://llamasoft.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=58e9392511&id=0b7840f394&e=acfd6f3c41

Am I going to get to play this over the holiday this year? I would love nothing more than to dig into TxK on my PSV while I have some days away from work... :(

"We’re not going to overload you with ultra psychedelia, but we will make it fluid and colourful and awesome-looking on the Vita’s delicious, vibrant OLED screen."

Not sure how much longer they will be able to use the OLED screen argument for. Also, I have a Vita, but I would never describe the screen as "delicious".

well it could be a very very long time (if ever) before most of the vitas in the wild don't have the oled screed, unless the screens all start dying which is a possibility

Can't wait for some Llamasoft goodness on the Vita's glorious OLED.

A match made in shmup gaming heaven.

I want that TV out, damnit.

On the plus side, if this doesn't come to PS3/4 I will probably buy one of those Vita TV things for this. On a plasma, this should look stupid dope.
The TV isn't showing the same thing as the PSV, right? I wasn't clear what was going on. (Also, didn't have sound, so YMMV.)

Saw this in my "mailing list" (aka, mostly spam) mailbox:

With the (mostly) letdowns of the next-gen launch games, I'm not even kidding when I say this could well be my GO(A)TY.

I kinda hope it has some mode where it's near-identical to T2K on the Jag as well. There's just something about how that plays which I don't think TXK will duplicate. Be similar to, sure... but not the same.

What's that? This is about a spiritual successor to Tempest 2000 (and 3000).

Oh god, please let there be a "T2K" mode for this!

Cool I played tempest 2000 a lot it was like the Tetris for the jaguar. Together with raymen and alien vs predator one of the best games of its generation. I had lots of fun with the jaguar even with the brush Lee game. Bring it to the ps4!

I adored Tempest 2000...but I still have low expectations.
Play Space Giraffe. That'll fix those expectations!

Gonna be another great game from Minter that no one understands.
He's said that this is an intentionally Minter-muted game compared to the likes of all his iOS stuff and Space Giraffe. Will be far closer to T2K than anything he's released since then, from what I can gather.

If it's not on PS4, just buy one of those Vita TV thingys :) Nothing regarding compatibility has been mentioned, but it's more a controller game than a touchpad/screen game, so it should be ideal for it.

Hopefully it will become a psn game tempest was mesmerizing on a big screen. Or I have to get a vita tv or Sony should introduce vita to ps4 streaming :-)

Not happening. Apparently it doesn't work well on the small screen. I can't be arsed looking for it, but pretty sure he posted in the OT PC thread regarding a Vita port (though I may be mistaken).

So this is the latest update:

BOOO. But hopefully that means we might get it by NYE. Should we tweet this dude to hurry along the process? Knowing it has been finished but in limbo for weeks kills me!

I hate bumping this when there's no new news, but does anyone know when this is supposed to be released? Minter's Twitter doesn't indicate anything (other than an RT of someone with positive impressions of it at CES) and the only mentions of it I can find are "TBA 2014". He submitted it for approval, in December, for fuck's sake :/

Ah, when I saw the thread was bumped, I was hoping for some news about the game as well. I'd like to know about the game's upcoming release, too.
