I think it would work well for the sprites. Not the background tiles though, those are too detailed/"realistic".This works well for games with simpler pixel art. Not for games like Final Fantasy VI.
The originals weren't anything to write home about either, but the iOS sprites manages to be much worse. I hate how soft the new overworld character sprites look.
Their console/handheld fanbase I mean. The one that made them what they are today.
we certainly had nothing to do with the monstrosities they've been putting out...
uh yeah, 3DS? You know, sort of like how they redid EVERY OTHER FINAL FANTASY on 3DS / PSP before they went to iOS? Why WOULDN'T you expect that is a better question.

oh and I dislike how they have the characters' mugshots stick out of the dialog box... what is up with that?
OK, insult me all you want but what exactly looks so bad about this?
what am I missing?

I like retro gaming well enough. But staring at pixels isn't so great. I think that smooth textures look better.Scanlines look good in some games, you can tell the art was made with them in mind. It's screen curvature filters that baffle me.
Oh man, I'm enjoying this far too much. Hold on. Give me a second. I'll get my hate face on.
...
Who am I kidding? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I know it is a business decision. But what maddens me is that they won't even try releasing this on the Vita or 3DS. It's like, besides FFX HD, they had decided to launch/re-release their main FF on everything EXCEPT handhelds.
I mean, just upgrade the 2D visuals and release it on dedicated handhelds. Is that really that much to ask?
FFV didn't get a 3DS, PSP or DS version either.
Why is this such a big deal? If you don't like it then just ignore it. The original version is still around so just go play that instead.
The overworld sprites do look kind of bad but honestly they're not THAT much of a downgrade to warrant the reactions they got. And in battle they absolutely look fine.
Five ≠ Six
Five didn't come to NA until 2006.
I think it looks good outside of the characters who look like they were plucked out of another game.
This is either epic sarcasm of you haven't seen how they butchered FFV
At least, everyone who was excited for a FF7 remake, will finally get one. :lol

The reactions are warranted because the visuals are overall a mess. And I find the in-battle sprites for the heroes are just as bad as the over world sprites. It's like they took the old sprites, resized them and tried to emulate some weird soft sprite filter. It's hideous.
I've seen better efforts on their PSP remakes.
Exactly. Look at the bright, shiny, gold side of the coin. The remakes are finally happening. FFVI is getting one. FFVII is getting one. Who knows, maybe FFVIII and FFIX are due one soon? It's happening; dreams are coming true.At least, everyone who was excited for a FF7 remake, will finally get one. :lol
You can't just easily do a 'rpg makerify' version of it.
Looks like they were plucked right off the original cover.
And if they're proceeding with more, the game must have sold enough to be profitable for them.
That actually doesn't look too bad. Even though I usually prefer such filters on 16-bit games and up.
The PSP remakes definitely demonstrate how much better they could do if they gave a shit.
