Final Fantasy VI is being "remade" for iOS and Android; Square interested in FF7 iOS

You got to be kidding. This is a joke right? Its not April 1st yet. They really shouldn't have dangled the carrot in front of us with that PS3 tech demo. Now we go to this, great. I hope it doesn't release, or at least in the US.

EDIT: Ooops, nevermind. Still I hope the FF7 iOS never happens.

The originals weren't anything to write home about either, but the iOS sprites manages to be much worse. I hate how soft the new overworld character sprites look.

The overworld sprites do look kind of bad but honestly they're not THAT much of a downgrade to warrant the reactions they got. And in battle they absolutely look fine.

Their console/handheld fanbase I mean. The one that made them what they are today.

we certainly had nothing to do with the monstrosities they've been putting out...

I know it is a business decision. But what maddens me is that they won't even try releasing this on the Vita or 3DS. It's like, besides FFX HD, they had decided to launch/re-release their main FF on everything EXCEPT handhelds.

I mean, just upgrade the 2D visuals and release it on dedicated handhelds. Is that really that much to ask?

Thank god I have a beer in front of me right now. At least I can try to drown the sadness.

Why the hell is Square Enix holding Final Fantasy VII hostage? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

Oh man, I'm enjoying this far too much. Hold on. Give me a second. I'll get my hate face on.

...

Who am I kidding? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

uh yeah, 3DS? You know, sort of like how they redid EVERY OTHER FINAL FANTASY (bastard child FFV RPG Maker Edition aside) on the DS / PSP before they went to iOS? Why WOULDN'T you expect that is a better question.

After they switched to mobile for IV and V, I dropped any expectation of a 3DS version.

Why is this such a big deal? If you don't like it then just ignore it. The original version is still around so just go play that instead.

Them making an updated version for ios/android doesn't make all previous versions go extinct

OK, insult me all you want but what exactly looks so bad about this?
what am I missing?

Do a search for final fantasy anthologies and compare side by side. The battle sprites are a bit more detailed at a minimum. I don't know what is going on with those portrait dialogue boxes though.

I hate making new threads because I don't want to be one of the ones who spam the board. That being said, here's my sorta-related-to-this-thread question.

What does SE have confirmed/announced for the the West? I'll try to take an off the top of my head guess, but I haven't been really tracking it. I still love this company, but they're losing me. The FF and DQ mobile ports arent confirmed officially for here yet right?

Final Fantasy 14 - PS4 (Actually I don't remember if this is confirmed?)
Final Fantasy 15 - PS4/XBO
Bravely Default: Where the Fairy Flies - 3DS
Drakengard - PS3
Kingdom Hearts 3 - PS4/XBO

It is, although you would think they would have at least taken a stab at the FF3 DS engine.. Like they did even with FF4: The After Years....... I would presume they'll do FFVI: RPG Maker edition followed up with FFVI in the style of FF3 DS a year later.

A sad day for one of my favorite games.

I'd always been hoping they'd remake VI the way they remade IV for the Complete Collection on PSP, but I always knew they'd either make a shitty iOS port like V or an even shittier 3D remake like III and IV on the DS

Oh well, now I can lay my hopes and dreams to rest. Guess I'll always play the PS1 version of VI since I don't own an SNES anymore.

The reactions are warranted because the visuals are overall a mess. And I find the in-battle sprites for the heroes are just as bad as the over world sprites. It's like they took the old sprites, resized them and tried to emulate some weird soft sprite filter. It's hideous.

I've seen better efforts on their PSP remakes.

This is either epic sarcasm of you haven't seen how they butchered FFV

I purchased it day 1 and well, I was able to adapt to the different sprite style. It's not the abomination some people claim it is and feels quite smooth to me. Of course SE could have put more effort into FF5 and I would gladly help to create updated assets for the FF6 port just to make it as appealing as possible. For the youngsters and the nostalgia stricken veterans alike. :)

really curious how the visuals will look though. They say it will be 'similar to ffv' but that just means in style.

FF6 looked way better than the other snes FF games with more detailed sprites and world.

You can't just easily do a 'rpg makerify' version of it.

I think it looks good outside of the characters who look like they were plucked out of another game.

Honestly outside of the character sprites I think it looks decent enough. The backgrounds and monster sprites in particular look nice, and the UI is...I mean, what were you really expecting from the UI?

The PSP remakes definitely demonstrate how much better they could do if they gave a shit.

I definitely agree that the mobile version of Final Fantasy V doesn't look so great. And I vastly prefer the original look.

For a game that is supposed to be an "update" on some level, it shouldn't be a downgrade.
There's all sorts of problems with the port, but one of the worst parts for me, is how all of the different elements are mismatched and don't form a cohesive aesthetic.

The character models don't look so great, and don't match other textures very well. And the text-boxes look very out of place.

At least, everyone who was excited for a FF7 remake, will finally get one. :lol
Exactly. Look at the bright, shiny, gold side of the coin. The remakes are finally happening. FFVI is getting one. FFVII is getting one. Who knows, maybe FFVIII and FFIX are due one soon? It's happening; dreams are coming true.

On a serious note, I think this will make some decent money for the effort it takes SE.

Looks like they were plucked right off the original cover.

And if they're proceeding with more, the game must have sold enough to be profitable for them.

Right, but I don't feel that the cover art necessarily matches the rest of the aesthetic.

Like for example, the GTA covers have a more cartoony art style than the games.

If the main characters in GTA were cellshaded and everything else was the same, it would look weird, even if it was canonical to the cover.

And yes they actually said they did well worldwide: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=683169

Did someone post the Planet of the Apes gif yet?

Because my reaction right now is pretty much his exact words from the end of the movie.

They blew it all up.
