Final Fantasy VI is being "remade" for iOS and Android; Square interested in FF7 iOS

I truly think the worst part of the thing isn't that it's on mobile (though everyone's expressed their grievances about the general aesthetic).

It's that they've made the game even easier than it originally was. There was very little incentive to use the Esper system as it was originally intended to be (ie: customize your characters by equipping Espers not according to the skills they give you, but according to the stats that they increase when you level up). Your stats, aside from HP/MP, do not level up with you throughout the game unless you have an Esper equipped (which will have a stat associated with it that will allow your stats to increase by a certain number at your level up).

By making the game markedly easier, there is even less incentive to use the Esper system accordingly. Making the game difficult, or tweaking the Esper system to give it more depth and making it so that you can customize your characters to multi-job according to their stats aside of their base skills, would have probably been the better approach. But alas, it doesn't seem like they would want to do anything at all to make the game have more depth. It's disappointing what they're doing.

Funny, these shitty iOS/Android remakes might actually be what it takes to unite the FF fanbase after all these years. We're all going to have to watch in horror as SE bastardizes each of our favorite FFs in turn. I'm not the biggest fan of VI, but I got nothing but sympathy for those who are. I know my precious VII is next.

Are you a masochist or something...?
Didn't you learned anything with the MML3 fiasco...? Look at their fans! They lost their souls! But at least, Megaman is now resting in peace.
On the other hand, Square keeps releasing shit like this...

I'd rather would pay 40 for a nice remake than a 10 dollar ugly crappy remake.

Same here, but clearly we're outnumbered. Hell, they put out 3rd Birthday and Dissidia 012 for only $30 new despite them having the highest production values on the PSP, and multiple CG cutscenes, and they still didn't sell well. All the while, FFXIII critics screaming at them for years that focusing on graphics is the wrong way to go.

Just kind of ironic.

So it's gonna be uglier, easier, and harder to control.

Why do we want this?

At least FFVI Advance is great aside from the music.

I can't wait until they hit Sega levels and license their properties out for pre-installation on generic Android micro-consoles.

So glad I just played and finished ffvi emulated on SNES. Wireless 360 controller chilling on the couch, 40inch TV. Game looked great just applied a 2x filter.

Lol and there was minimal grinding.

You can make a pretty game without putting too much focus on graphics (assuming this is an actual issue with XIII, I have yet play the game so I can't really comment on it, but I'm talking hypothetically... if that's the right way to put it?).

Well that game was $40 new.

People flip out anytime SQEX releases an iOS game over $10. Hard to blame them really. Kotaku front pages a story calling their pricing "insane" every time a new game is announced. I don't know what they expect really.

They're charging $16 USD for FF5. For the quality of work you're getting in return, "insane" isn't a bad term for it.

I have absolutely nothing against it being on iOS/Android - i welcome that in fact.

What i don't like though is the awful re-imagining of the art style. FFV looked awful in its re-release.

And with that, the last piece of me wanting a remake of 7 died.

I can't think of many things more disrespectful to the people that created those games, than to remake them for a mobile phone with shitty visuals, better visuals being the only worthwhile reason to remake them in the first place.

At this point I'm pretty much done with the genre, and I'm definitely done with Square Enix. At least Tales of Symphonia HD is coming around.
I'm definitely not done with the genre. And Square Enix products definitely hold no weight on how much I enjoy the genre. I don't honestly pay any more attention to their products than I would, say, Capcom products.

Tales of Symphonia is a great game, though. Tales games have always been great and continue to be.

I can't decide if their sharpened 2D remake approach is worse then their shit-design 3D chibi remake approach. Regardless, I know I'm not going to get suckered into paying yet another premium for Square Enix's boilerplate remakes

Also another really terrible thing about FFV iOS.

Eight directional movement in a former four directional world, it just does not work. They just took the 3D control scheme from Chaos Rings, FF3 iOS and, I assume, FF4 iOS and pooped it into this game.

It just does not work...

Hey look, you can get decent quality higher res sprites if you are willing to pay more than 3 cents per character.

Ugh. I loved playing those on the PSP.

Continue to be ignored Square. It's your call.

I give them 2-3 years when they realize a company of their size can't survive on shitty mobile games.

I had high hopes for SE, it seemed like they were getting their shit together in anticipation for next gen. Now I feel like they will continue to be behind like they have been this gen.

Maybe I should've said "equally shitty" The crap graphics of FFV iOS were to be expected since it's a cheaply made iOS game. I was really disappointed with the awful 3D sprites and graphics of the DS. They could've done so much better with their time and money on the DS, like what they did with FFIV the Complete Collection.

Well that's mostly fair, but there's way more charm and effort in the DS remakes than the sloppy V remake. I mean, I shouldn't judge until we see the first screens. Maybe, just maybe, the more sophisticated graphics of VI will prompt them not to use the same horrible filter process. Maybe they'll mostly leave the graphics alone. That's about all I can hope for and even then, I'm not liking the chances :/

All this talk about grinding makes me wonder if they'll change the Cursed/Paladin Shield. The only time I would grind was for that.

man i don't know why im so sad over this

they could do fuck all they want with VII

but with VI i feel like imma cry

all these emotions over a fugging video game for gods sake :(

my only problem with this is that it'll be some people's first encounter with ffvi. & that's pretty damn depressing...

as for the rest of us, there's always the originals. just finished re-replaying ffvii, & it was as wonderful as ever. fuck remakes: enjoy these games for what they were, as they were (&, if possible, i'd suggest playing'm on a vita, which only makes'm even better :) )...

But I thought the reason they're releasing all these mobile games is because they sell like hotcakes in Japan and they're more profitable than the console output for a while now?

Hope it comes to US soon, would enjoy playing this on my commute to work and probably during a few lunch breaks.

The genre itself is still great and there are lots of awesome examples out there these days... Square Enix just isn't one of the publishers that's putting them out.

That's what I think, too. I don't pretend to know any numbers, though. I wonder if these ventures truly are profitable? Honestly with the amount of devices out there, you'd assume yes.

The echoes of unremitting horror and despair have become one of the best things about Square-Enix threads lately.

I just don't care anymore. I was expecting this, so nothing here raises an eyebrow for me. Except for the difficulty thing. Definitely not a definitive experience even if you're happy with touch controls and the inevitably bad graphical overhaul. Nothing screams "here, have a deliberately-conceived B-tier experience that was designed to be made more of a shallow, throwaway little game for when you're at the bus stop!" more than this.

Well, maybe except for arbitrarily squeezing a microtransactions store in there, but fortunately, the previous main FF games for mobile haven't set that precedent.

Now I'm just awaiting some kind of FFVII remake for iOS and Android. It will be glorious, like, the biblical end times.

This hurts. It really does. But as long as there's no VIII mobile, then I'll withold my "fuck you" to Square.

I'm warning you Square, you don't want my "fuck you".

I don't really feel anything about this as much as I loved the game. No surprise either. I suppose the sad thing is that it will likely be very successful, but at least we don't have to wonder about some sort of 3DS or even Vita remake down the line with this coming.

I must say a part of me want to see them put VII on iOS, if only to see the hilarious thread it would create. Something like that one Duckroll posted a while back about the Breath of Fire game.

I know the GBA port has inferior audio, but that doesn't mean this iOS thing has any chance at dethroning it. They have flash cart patches that resolve that issue.

always a chance.

Many parts of this article could be 'lost in translation' (must keep hope). I can't find a source on the site either O.o

I will with hold my judgement until I see screenshots, but if FFV is anything to go by, I am very doubtful this will be good.

Oh God. Please. Don't treat it as badly as FFV. Please. PLEASE. Don't do this to your poor fans.

Take a look at All the Bravest, SE. Do it. That game? Looked wonderfully on smartphones. It wasn't a good "game", but it nailed the 16bit charm. Capture that look.

Don't, I repeat, don't repeat FFV. My eyes still hurt from that. Pleasefortheloveofgod.

I agree with this.

I read the thread title as FFVII and literally felt lightheaded for a moment.

I don't have any feelings for FFVI, but for those that do, I am so, so sorry.

I'm too indifferent to really be angry as after the FFV remake I knew this was only a matter of time. These mobile remakes look like such little care was put into them.

I'm hoping that someday FF6 gets the FF4 Complete Collection treatment. Higher res, yet fully detailed (and faithful!) sprites.

If this game excludes the possibility of a proper FFVI remake then.. S-E can fuck off. I've completely lost all respect for this company. There are good mobile games, I have played many and enjoyed them, but the way S-E keeps putting all their efforts in the mobile market and porting all of their most important games there is baffling. So now we will have DQI-VIII and even FFVI, that many people expected would get a real remake ala FFIII and FFIV and on "real handhelds", on a mobile phone...

Ugh. It's only a matter of time till you get that FF7 remake now. This is like those twisted "be careful what you wish for" stories. You THOUGHT you wanted a FF6 and FF7 remake until you realized it would be a fucking abomination and disgrace to the originals.

Then when you're done with it you sell it and get most of your money back.

How do you do that with an iOS game?

Interesting that you guys are so down on FFV. The intended audience apparently loved it.

I looked over some of the reviews, and more than a few mentioned liking the graphics.

I'm really wondering who loved it, and how many fans are buying it on their ios/android?
Wondering if they were Square fans or people who are trying Final Fantasy for the first time.
