Final Fantasy VI is being "remade" for iOS and Android; Square interested in FF7 iOS

The really sad thing about it is that it shows beyond any doubt that they don't give a rats ass about the quality of their own game.

This is a simple 2D game, fixing the tiling in this prominent scene shouldn't take a decent artist more than an hour or two, but they still decided to ship it like that.

A sad day for one of my favorite games.

I'd always been hoping they'd remake VI the way they remade IV for the Complete Collection on PSP, but I always knew they'd either make a shitty iOS port like V or an even shittier 3D remake like III and IV on the DS

Oh well, now I can lay my hopes and dreams to rest. Guess I'll always play the PS1 version of VI since I don't own an SNES anymore.

wat

I'd gladly take a DS (original even) remake like III or IV any day over the sloppy effort that is FFV ios. In what universe are the DS remakes worse?

Edit: double wat at playing the PS1 version

It doesn't surprise me, the new CEO anticipated this scenario a few months ago.
iOS and Android offer them the biggest possible installed base for their games and they can make shitty remakes/ports with really small budgets. Other platforms have a much smaller audience and the expected quality is much higher.
It's an ideal situation for them...but also their last resort....I doubt they will able to survive for many years at this point. They are fundamentally a game company which can't develop new games and barely survives making ports and spin offs of their old glories.

If the fabled FF7 remake finally comes out but it's for iOS, I'm going to die laughing

Well, they're never going to use the amount of resources it would take to do a 'proper' remake so if it gets remade at all I don't think it's going to be what people 'want'.

So yes, there will be much laughing.

It would cost money. The good thing with smartphone titles is that they cost nothing to make. But hey, I think they rather kill their franchises to chase after that small money.

If they keep going, I don't give them 3 years before going bankrupt.

I really REALLY hate the FFV iOS character sprites.

The only iOS reviews I ever see that are negative is if the app just plain does not work.

Even then, that pokemon port for $1 that glitched out when it launched? still had multiple 5 star reviews saying "I have been waiting for this" and "5 stars for when it works because I love Pokemon"

I find it incredible hard to trust iOS App store reviews .

Right, but I don't feel that the cover art necessarily matches the rest of the aesthetic.

Like for example, the GTA covers have a more cartoony art style than the games.

If the main characters in GTA were cellshaded and everything else was the same, it would look weird, even if it was canonical to the cover.

And yes they actually said they did well worldwide: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=683169

I kind of agree, but I'm just saying that dates all the way back to the original vision of what the game was. Look at the rocks and the ground the character is standing on in that cover and compare it to him. People acting like they sullied a classic work are missing that it's probably more accurately what they originally intended.

Other people talking about the font and stuff, sure, I think it could be better. But they probably are trying to make it work for small phone screens.

i blame the western journalists!

stop interviewing SE about shitty lightning games or shovelware like FF15 and get to them the message that the visuals are butt for these remakes.

I think it looks good outside of the characters who look like they were plucked out of another game.

Yeah, same here. If they tone down that flat, cartoony style a bit, I wouldn't mind it. Not going to judge it until I see some screens of the game, at least.
And I'm not sure why people are so upset about this announcement? Is it only about the character art? Or is it related to the game only being released on iOS/Android? Are they known to microtransaction the shit out of their mobile games or something? I have yet to buy a S-E game for mobiles myself, so I honestly don't know.

Yep. I've even see 5 star app reviews on shitty lazy effort ripoff games that are all literally the same games with just different sprites.

Maybe I should've said "equally shitty" The crap graphics of FFV iOS were to be expected since it's a cheaply made iOS game. I was really disappointed with the awful 3D sprites and graphics of the DS. They could've done so much better with their time and money on the DS, like what they did with FFIV the Complete Collection.

This is disappointing but I dont really care.. I'm definitely getting an new ipad later this year... but I've bought 4 5 6 and 7 like 5 times each... I wanted a remake like FFIV collection on psps with you know hires spirits... I'll probably get FF tactics because it looks great.. but I bought it like 3 times too...
Please guys just dont buy this shit...

I really hope square isnt stupid enough to not fuck up the FF7 """remake""" lol but this is SE soo.. but yeah after FF15 KH3 and FF13 LR which I'm not even that excited about think its time te forget them..

Grinding implies you MUST partake in numerous random battles to get strong enough to advance.

FFVI is like the easiest 2D Final Fantasy. If you run straight through and only fight the typical random battles, you're more than powerful to beast through the game, not to mention overpowered characters like Sabin.

They might actually make this game a little more difficult by reducing the random encounter rate, but leaving the game balance intact (so it's the same game but you earn less experience in the end).

Anyways, bound to happen. FFVII isn't "next" to suffer the same fate. They can't just take FFVII and remake sprites and call it a day. It isn't a 2D game. And if they made a whole new 2D game out of FFVII, that'd be neat to see.

I'm assuming they'd just port the PS1 or PC version.

People have been hoping for a remake of FF VI for a while. This is not the kind of remake they were hoping for.

Well it's the remake they're getting and the only one that makes sense. They could remake it for the 3DS or Vita, but it would have higher production costs + much lower sales, not a viable option.

Making it for smartphones gives them the biggest market + lower production costs

We all know that the glorious passion that fueled Square during the SNES/PS1 era is long gone, but even for them that's a new low: kicking their own legacy in the ass

I do not care for the company other than some of their western developers and XV which seems to have some of that old Square magic that I loved so much back then

Being JRPG fan must be annoying

FFVI is a sacred cow
Not to me.

Final Fantasy IV is my favourite Final Fantasy game, and has been given this treatment multiple times.

And my other favourite, Final Fantasy IX, hasn't really been touched. But I wouldn't honestly mind if they gave it a mobile game.

Though I don't like touch controls, so a touch-screen only version wouldn't do much to impress me, either.

Holy crap that's bad, they cant even be bothered to get the sprites to tile right. The character sprite looks like a sticker or something on a monitor. Just looks plain cheap and lazy, but they want us to pay 15 bucks in a market saturated with $1-2 games.

Biggest market doesn't have to = least effort. Unfortunately, in Square's case, it does.

Funny, these shitty iOS/Android remakes might actually be what it takes to unite the FF fanbase after all these years. We're all going to have to watch in horror as SE bastardizes each of our favorite FFs in turn. I'm not the biggest fan of VI, but I got nothing but sympathy for those who are. I know my precious VII is next.

I really don't understand these type of posts these days.
No fuck no because your favourite game is not being released on your favourite console?
You think Square Enix will even bother looking at mobiles if it can't see the massive sales potentials there?
Wait till the release of Xbone/PS4 then you'll understand that home consoles are a dying breed and mobiles/tablets are were the profit is these days.

Oh my god, it's like you didn't even read the thread.

Hey look, you can get decent quality higher res sprites if you are willing to pay more than 3 cents per character.

Well that game was $40 new.

People flip out anytime SQEX releases an iOS game over $10. Hard to blame them really. Kotaku front pages a story calling their pricing "insane" every time a new game is announced. I don't know what they expect really.

on the plus side it'll be difficult to make ffvii look worse than it already does

i look forward to their best efforts to do so

I'd rather would pay 40 for a nice remake than a 10 dollar ugly crappy remake.

I didn't play the FFV mobile port, but I played the so-called "RPG Maker" version of FF Dimensions and this type of style looks much, much better on a mobile phone screen than on an iPad.

Personally I would've much rather seen a 3DS or Vita version, but if this gets enough popularity then who knows? The After Years started as a cash grab mobile game and now they're remaking it fully in 3D.

I'm okay with it, and I'll probably buy it. My ONLY complaint is the inconsistency between the overworld sprite and Amano portraits. That was excusable with the SNES limitations, but they need to pick a side and stick to it.
