why do you millenials always have to go with some variation of This Thing/Person I Like Is The Bestest Thing Ever

really shows a lack of perspective. which is fine but one ought really sample a little more than pop (or just music for that matter) before making such a decree

At least Kanye's a Gen Xer. Wait until the next gen of Bieber-ites.

because we are fixing the previous generations fuck ups that has left the country in its current state and our things are superior because they have to be superior to survive

old people should learn to know their place in the world

He's one of the few artists in mainstream hip hop who is willing to push the boundaries of the genre.

Basically this. Musically, especially production wise, in the mainstream he's very much setting trends or breaking boundaries. Whilst I do feel lyrically his old work is considerably more poignant, musically his newer work makes more of an impact. Even the music video's and promo's etc that go with them, down to the art, media, publicity stunts et all.

Very much looking forward to his next project, but I just hope he makes some ground in the fashion world, else his new album also runs the risk of having an overly aggressive, scatty style and personality about it.

I don't have anything against his music, its kind-of-ok. (and thats a good rating coming from a guy who doesn't listen to that kind of music)

But you have to admit that he's acting unhealthy arrogant and that he comes off as the biggest douche in the history, which makes it very hard to like him as a person.

Also; I can't believe that Jimmy Kimmel postponed the best band in the world, the Arctic Monkeys, just because Kanye wouldn't stop talking about his petty hollywood problems...

  • With his persona that is bigger than the industry itself. His character has grown from album to album. Yeezus is the peak of this where he takes a very different approach from his other albums and mixes acid house and industrial sounds, with raw primal vocals.
  • The way he promoted Yeezus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgR-8W5JF10

What does the bolded mean exactly?

How has using a projector to promote an album "revolutionised the industry"?

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is also one of the highest rated hip hop albums of all time, and arguably the best "comeback" album of all time. That year of introspection he had allowed him to change the entire landscape of hip hop, producing tracks like Power and the flawless Runaway.

...right. So, again, how has any of that "revolutionised the industry"?

You cannot be serious.

ITT: A lot of people saying Kanye West has revolutionised the music/hip hop industry. Not one example of the influence he's had on the music/hip hop industry.

You criticize his shenanigans, yet compare Kanye with Beethoven... That comparison is dumber than anything Kanye has said or done.

It's funny how people are so focused on the 'now'--that they forget that 99.9% of the artists of a particular time will be instantly forgotten. Beethoven and Shakespeare are extremely rare. 99.9% of the artists of their time were forgotten too.

But you have to admit that he's acting unhealthy arrogant and that he comes off as the biggest douche in the history, which makes it very hard to like him as a person.

He's a product of the Reality TV generation. Middling talent made up for by being loud, boisterous, and confrontational. Why do you think he married a Kardashian?

There's surprisingly little in the way of music posted in this thread. I thought some of you would back up your posts with some songs.

I don't understand why Kanye fans are so obsessed with telling everyone that he's the greatest shit in human history, maybe they need to compensate the fact that they know they have shitty tastes.

Teenagers are gonna teenagers

You ain't runnin shit, home skillet.

you are free to watch our movies, our tv shows, using computers running our operating systems, buying stocks from our stock market, being obsessed with what my country does on a regular basis run by our politicians and then complain about our music on an American forum and call our musicians names

enjoy your freedom we provided you. If a dictator is about to take over half of europe our armies funded by our taxes will be there to save you again, so sleep well

Sorry to ruin your fantasies but Kanye West has done nothing innovative or original. Your argument's that his music is experimental... Are you kidding me? Compared to artists such as Pink Floyd and Queen his music is trash and in no shape or form innovative!

I usually keep an eye on pop culture even hip hop, but I can't hum or recall a single one of his songs. They must be utterly forgettable and unremarkable.

Today I learned I'm not allowed to criticize Kanye West because I use Windows 7.

His music never caught on in the Netherlands (although Watch the Throne did reach #3 in album sales), his songs never charted highly. It's quite telling that his highest charted one is a song in which he only features. I have never heard one of his own songs on the radio.

On top of that, he violated Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

i can't fuck with mbdtf but all of his earlier work is great along with yeezus but lyrical hes lost his touch

mbdtf is still in my itunes library so I shouldn't try to give it another listen

LMAO holy shit

He's made a lot of great albums but I don't know if I would call him "one of the greatest contemporary artists of all time".

He's cool, but all he does pretty much is take other peoples music or approach to music. When he started out he was basically doing what the RZA did but with backpack rapping, and nowadays with Yeezus, MBTDF, WTT he pretty much just takes other peoples music and 'exec produces' it into something he calls his own. He's less of a composer like Beethoven and more like a conductor or something. I can understand why the average person thinks he's so amazing though.

mbdtf is pretty overrated. It's all been downhill from the college dropout (not that his recent output isn't good, it's just not great), which is a legitimately fantastic album, bloat and all. I don't know about all time but it's easily one of the best albums of the 2000s
