Adrian Peterson is the star running back of the Minnesota Vikings. His son (age 2) has passed away after being beaten by his mother's boyfriend in South Dakota.

Police in South Dakota confirmed to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the 2-year-old boy died, days after he was allegedly beaten by his mother’s boyfriend.

Robert Joseph Patterson was arrested on charges of aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault, and the state’s attorney is now reviewing the matter for possible additional charges.

edit: Video was of another son.

Wow. So sad. RIP. I have much respect fo AP for coming back like he did last year after the catastrophic knee injury. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for him right now.

Dude doesn't follow football. Or something....

must have been very angry to forfeit your life like this. Legal means, or Illegal means.

This is fucked up beyond belief.

If someone comes in here and starts making snide comments about athletes having kids out of wedlock can they be promptly shown the door? I only say because I know its going to come up.

I'm a Bears fan, and have met AP before. He's a class act, and I feel so bad for him. I can't imagine what he's going through. My thoughts are with him and his family.

The guy who did this is a piece of garbage. He deserves whatever happens to him in prison.

If AP does play this week (as he said he was going to back when his son was in critical condition), I hope he rushes for 300 yards.

The Peterson/Patterson thing was confusing me much longer than it should have.

I expected the son would be a teen/adult. I'll never understand how someone can willingly hurt a child.

wow, RIP. horrible story.

I would likely have to leave the hospital, go to jail, and ask to be arrested before I do something stupid. jesus...

some more details about the suspect
In the aftermath of Patterson's latest arrest, the Lincoln County prosecutor's office on Friday filed motions to order Patterson to serve two year-long sentences that had been suspended in two prior domestic cases - one for the simple assault case and another for violating an order to stay away from the victim in that case. Those motions will be heard later this month.

Court records show that Patterson has a son with another Sioux Falls woman, and also show that the mother had asked for protection orders twice, claiming he'd choked and punched her, threatened her with a knife and held her in the bedroom against her will.

The mother chose not to pursue permanent protection orders, which ultimately were dropped voluntarily in 2010 and 2011.

In 2012, Patterson was charged with simple assault against the mother, however, and was ordered to undergo family violence training and to stay away from her until completing it.

Patterson's child lives with his mother, who declined to comment Friday morning when reached by The Argus Leader.

Another woman applied for a protection order against Patterson in 2004 in Jackson County, where he attended high school.

Caught this on my google news feed earlier and was hoping that the kid could've possibly pulled through but not meant to be.

Terrible for AP and his family and hopefully the guy who beat the kid gets his due punishment.

Man, this is tough to read. Feel so bad for the kid and AD. I'm sitting here with a picture of my 2 year old staring back at me on my second monitor and I can't even imagine going through this.

This is why stoning, and public beatings were invented. Beat this man to within an inch of his life, let him heal, rinse and repeat for the rest of his life in jail.

Awful, awful, news :(

Poor guy, can't imagine how difficult this must be for him.
No idea how he'll be able to return to football any time soon either.

Tragic tragic situation. I don't really know what else to say, but I'm at a loss for words at how despicable this is.

How Adrian still has faith in God after all the tragedies that have crossed him throughout his life is something I won't understand, but he's a stronger man than I.

Very sad.

I am certain of one thing, if anyone does that to my kid I would torture then kill him. I simply would not be able to control myself. Huge amounts of respect for this guy.
