MBDTF turns into a shit album halfway through. Did no one ever listen to College Dropout or Late Registration?
I am sure Kanye is ashamed he created such a crap album like "man how come I can't make an album as good as CD or LR anymore?"
Kanye's greatness doesn't have to do much with lyricism at all, though his lyrical content was sort of different in the context of the time he broke out in. Lyrics definitely aren't everything, but they are important. When I think of great Hip Hop artists I think of Rakim the best lyricist of all time imo, Kool G Rap and Polo (Poison in particular was such an incredible track), BDP and LL for being true battling MC's. Run DMC for what they did for the genre, Beastie Boys. These people were trailblazers.
But then, I'm from a different generation. So I'm bound to think this, just as Kanye fans are from a different generation and they think he's a trailblazer. Music changes, but attitudes don't. They repeat from generation to generation and that won't ever change.
Kanyeis one of the greatest, fwiw

my favorite Kanye track
College Dropout is the best debut album of all time
yeah I said it
(Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous and Illmatic would come in as a close second choices)
Illmatic is definitely better
Streetlights might be my favorite Kanye track.
808's and heartbreak created DrakeLoving Fugu's insightful posts.
So I don't know much about Kanye or followed music for so long. I keep hearing he was groundbreaking. Can I get some examples of what music was like before he came on board, some of the music he then released, and the direct influences it caused in the industry afterwards?
This list is perfect, though I would had added 'Last Call" to College DropoutAlright so I compiled a list of my personal favorites from Kanye's albums. I disagree. Kanye is the music. If it wasn't for Kanye the arrogant, brash, impulsive, always unsatisfied, always motivated, information fiend, religiously conflicted and generally savant-esque he is, we never would have had the diversity and consistency his catalog offers, nor the specific lyrical content people gravitated towards in the first place or stayed with him for over the years. It is the same impulsiveness, confidence and arrogance in his personality that allows something like an 808s to exist. Charisma is the reason why people sat through College Dropout, and he is pretty damn eccentric especially in the genre he's in.There is a great inconsistency between artist Kanye and person Kanye, and honestly I see no redeeming qualities of person Kanye, he somehow manages to be pedantic, flamboyant and awkward at the same time, he's not eccentric, he's not anti establishment, he is not interesting, I even dare to say he has some degree of autism by some of the interviews I've seen of him. He has zero charisma.
Just wanted to put this out there.
This list is perfect, though I would had added 'Last Call" to College Dropout
He's a good producer, but I've never heard anything to suggest the guy is anything more than an average rapper lacking in anything resembling personal or artistic depth.
Lost in the World needs to be added under Dark Twisted Fantasy. It's a track that feels over produced as hell but it works very well.
You will cry tears listening to him perform Bound 2 live.Didn't read the OP? We're not discussing his actions, just his music.
Listening through Yeezus thanks to this thread. Can't get enough of Bound 2.
Wait so you think Kanye is a genius? The closest thing to a pop genius that I can think of is the Beatles.
The Beatles remained relevant by consciously subverting what they'd become associated with and by adapting a wide variety of different musical vocabularies into the narrow form of rock music that they were familiar with. While many acts have reinvented themselves, they did so in front of arguably the largest audience in the history of music and they did so in ways that never seemed to lose the attention of that audience.
I am skeptical of referring to them as geniuses even still because the extent of their capitalization of the western ear is nearly total. It is tough to say if their music would stand alone if they weren't driven by the marketing force that they were, especially when their songwriting is as scattershot as it is.
Influence is a difficult measure when discussing pop music because pop music is, to a degree unlike anywhere else in music, directed by money and marketing. It is therefore very difficult to distinguish between a pop artist whose influences can be felt elsewhere because of their sales success and a pop artists whose influences can be felt elsewhere because of their ingenuity. I'm not convinced that it's possible to make that designation in the present and I would be surprised if it were ever truly possible to do so in the future.
You are joking right?
Hell yes, so pumped.Agreed. Got tickets to see Yeezus at the end of month.

:lol :lol perfect. People hate Kanye as a person so much they can't acknowledge how talented he his musically.
Honest and serious question--does he produce his own songs?
You're right, look at that loser Lou Reed buying into the hype, what does he know about music?Kanye fans buying into his own self-proclaimed hype. This is actually the worst part about Kanye.
