Space Rangers HD: A War Apart collides with Steam October 17 (Gaming Saved)

For those who know the glory, and those who have yet to taste it...

1C Company is thrilled to announce that Space Rangers HD: A War Apart will be available on Steam worldwide on October 17, 2013.
Space Rangers HD: A War Apart remasters and enhances the world of the cult Space Rangers 2. The game was developed by the SNK-Games team in close cooperation with fans of the series. New story branch, upgrades, equipment, planetary battles and famous text adventures expand the boundaries of the already lush universe of the game in every direction, roughly doubling the game content.

The game has also received a major technical overhaul to for seamless compatibility with modern OSes. Game art was reworked to support display resolutions of up to 1920×1200 and planetary battles employ modern render technologies.

Space Rangers HD: A War Apart takes place in 3300AD. Our galaxy is invaded by the Dominators, combat robots that come under the influence of an alien technology. Players find themselves in a living, breathing world where they can engage in multiple activities: fight in space and hyperspace, trade, accomplish government missions, liberate planets from the Dominators in 3D RTS battles and complete text adventures leading to unique plot twists and rewards. The game ending is not set and players may find a victory of either side at the end – anybody can live the life of a pirate as well as that of a hero. All player actions affect what kind of place the Galaxy will be at the end.

One of PC gaming's most ambitious and unique games gets a facelift. Even if you've played the original and the stunning sequel to death, be fiscally irresponsible and buy another copy - if only to ensure Space Rangers 3 occurs.

Otherwise, we're all doomed.

Hell yes... I heard about this yesterday and cannot wait. Literally one of the best space games ever. I can only equate it to GTA V in space as far as it's openness and randomness.

Since this is happening, is there a chance of Space Rangers and Space Rangers 2 returning to Steam? I own the former but not the latter (I assume the pack wasn't discounted when I picked it up).

Good question. I'm guessing not, but it'd be nice, however redundant - given this is essentially a souped-up, spruced-up SR2.

Pylon thread? Pylon thread

Looks good as does most you recommend
It's not barely good, it's outstanding.
The most believable and convincing case of universe that goes on by itself regardless of the player input (which can be significant and very impactful, anyway).

I think the Metacritic user score, while not a great metric in itself, speaks volumes about how engrossing this game can be: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/space-rangers-2-rise-of-the-dominators

The day they are going to announce a sequel for this game (maybe a Kickstarter?) I'm going to lost it.
My only complain was with those underwhelming RTS sections.
I always fantasized about replacing those with Jagged Alliance-inspired turn based tactical battles to have a "11 out of 10" game.

Agreed on the planetary RTS elements and love the what-if regarding a TBS replacement. Everything else though...just so goddamn awesome.

I wonder if they'll keep that hilarious intro video with that so-bad-it's-mindblowing dub...

I'm listening friend! I'm a sucker for Pylon threads anyway - but this is some serious backing.

Might be time to acquire it. I've considered the original version plenty of times but there's always been something else that has interested me more.

The best game of 2006 that nobody played. It deserved more than just HD remake but I guess its fine for now. I hope more people play this endless experience of space traveling with awesome text based quest.

Yeah, the RTS part is pretty bad, though it is skippable like any part of the game. I'm still doing it though since the reward is usually damned high.

I did a bit of digging and 1C published both Space Rangers as well as Space Rangers 2, so its involvement with Space Rangers HD -- with a different developer, no less -- must mean that it owns the IP. I've sent an e-mail to 1C's European arm and will post the response should I receive one.

Good man. Looking forward to hearing what they say.

I think Elemental Games - the Vladivostok devs of the original SR games - splintered, with the bulk of the staff starting Katauri Interactive, which did the first redux of SR2 in Reloaded.

In any case, I think we'd be getting an SR3 out of Katauri, unless СНК-Games gets the nod from 1C after HD drops.

Everyone should experience a Space Rangers game, but you're right in that the graphics-prone generation might bypass untold amounts of fun because it isn't some over-produced polygon-fest.

Their loss!

Wonder what the price point will be...
Absolutely their loss, but not a pleasant one, since this is a game that the fun keep me entertained even when I'm beat it seven times in one holiday :(
Are we getting the OP?

SR3.....they better keep those text based quests and its day -1 for me!

Space Rangers was medium hit over here and I personally really loved it. Very unique gaming experience and I can play it over and over again. RTS parts were piss poor but you could skip them so there was no problem there.

Man this game. Can't wait for October 17th. If only they made planetary battles turn based, or anything besides an RTS WITHOUT A SAVE FUNCTION!

I received a response recommending to send the enquiry to another e-mail address, and upon sending it to that I received an automated response stating that the person who manages the inbox is on maternity leave, so now I have to send it to a third address. This is getting a little ridiculous. :p

I loved this damn game, but I already barely played the retouched version that came out a couple of years ago, and I'm not seeing anything HD about this.

Yes it's finally coming, have been waiting since spring 2012 when first news about it popped up.

Space Rangers 2 reboot with the unofficial resolution mod was great. And the little details this game has, AI, vast enough universe, different races and classes, different quest types (ugh RTS, even as I like it), good progression and the configurable difficulty setting were so good and amazing.

Hopefully they haven't screwed the balance of the game and the translation this time is better.

I wonder if it's going to be up on GOG some time after Steam release.

I was simply told that the original games are no longer offered, which doesn't really answer the question, though I assume the person misspoke and intended to suggest that the games won't be returning. Oh well. :(

Honestly the translation was part of the charm.

hell yes. always wanted to play Space Rangers 2 and was pretty bummed it got removed from Steam.

I can't count the number of times I have gotten excited over seeing the Star Wolves games in indie bundles. this is always followed by disappointment when I realize it's the Space Rangers series I am actually interested in.

When is this coming out exactly??
Hm, it's not listed on the Soon on Steam tab. The only thing I can find on the store regarding Space Rangers HD is the "A War Apart" trailer, which I'm not able to access, because it's not available in my country according to Steam (tried US, UK and German store front).

Probably at 2pm EST.

So the game is finally up. I have heard good things about the game over the years so I am interested. So I ask GAF is the game worth the 20 bucks they are asking for?

Tell me if it's a good port, chums.

I'm specifically interested in UI scaling or lack thereof.

edit: Oh wait, there's a max resolution of 1920×1200 so I guess it doesn't matter.
