Gamesindustry: Xbox Live Compute (Cloud Servers) offered free to devs

Fantastic news. The thought of purchasing an Xbox One is becoming more and more palatable; hopefully they'll have a Titanfall bundle somewhere down the line.

It would be a big mistake if they didn't have one.

I seriously hope EA uses dedicated servers for their sports games. IP booters run ramped and destroy competitive sports gaming online.

A game running dedicated severs is better than a game without. Don't suggest otherwise.

Show me a game that runs with dedicated servers on X1 and with P2P on PS4. Right, you can't. Because every game will very likely have dedicated servers on both platforms. I already wrote why this is nonsense from a developement perspective.

Killzone does NOT have dedicated servers. Killzone's dedicated servers seem more like servers that pick which host PS4 is the best one to use.

Killzone is somewhere in-between, they have servers for routing information, but the game is still hosted by one of the players.

edit. Wow, late. :P

Damn that is disappointing. I really thought that KZ:SF of all games would have dedicated servers. Hopefully the mp runs great since that is the 1 game I am buying at launch for the PS4.

One of the other things we've really been trying to push on is games as a service
No thanks.

The physical box, with the chips in it that it has, well there's no easy way to upgrade that. So we do expect that over time we'll see more and more offloading of intensive CPU processing to the cloud

We're sorry. But due to load dependencies we have removed cloud computing for game A. We have offloaded those resources to game A: The Sequel. Press any button to purchase game A: The Sequel.

No thanks. Cloud computing is a version of soft-DRM. Multiplayer is multiplayer so server shutdowns come with the territory. If we talk SP games here then fuck right the shit off. Work that shit on my box so I'm not tied to an internet connection.

It's DRM. Plain and simple. No shit technology moves fast, MS. Don't expect your (or Sony's) box to last 8 years again. Make a box without fluff that gets a new release every 4 years max. Make it easy to develop for. Make it backwards compatible with not just games, but peripherals like Kinect, wheels, etc. Make it at an easy price point. If Apple can do it every few months with a new phone/pad (same goes for Google) then you and Sony can, too.

Show me 5 games that definitively prove your point.

You know they will. It further cements Xbox and Titanfall as being hand in hand and making it the console of choice to play that game just like they do with marketing for COD.

This could happen for self-published indie titles I bet.

I don't think we have architecture or specs for either Xbox Live on the XBO or PSN on the PS4.

Well there is no specs for Sony is there? They don't have anything.

Azure specs are known I'm sure though maybe not the upgraded thunderhead part reserved for XB1.

Remember this isn't about XBL vs PSN, this is Xbox Live Compute vs Nothing.

Of course it's concern for publishers, providing similar services across major platforms equals more sales.

Why would it equals more sales?

If that was the case then publishers wouldn't be quite so happy to give exclusive maps, skins , characters or story to one particular version of a game.

10ms, this is why people need to temper their expectations, your not going to get 10ms thanks to dedicated servers. 10ms ping is reserved for LAN games.

Depends on your distance to the server, I can get 10ms to London servers right now on CS GO and I've seen Swedes with 5-9ms on Stockholm servers.

I would have thought after the reveal COD Ghosts had dedicated servers on both platforms, people had given up on the theory such things are exclusive to one platform.

Even Driveclub has dedicated servers, it's a service all technology companies are investing in, gaming is just one aspect of this. Sony themselves have recently done a deal with Rackspace to increase capacity, it's needed for Gaikai, movie & music streaming etc., as well as more mundane things.

That's not how it works with a cloud setup.
The resources are allocated dynamically.
It doesn't matter what the service is, a certain amount of resources are allocated and guaranteed to every player.

Incredible.

Microsoft: "We will have dedicated severs for every Xbox One game"

Response: "But there must be a catch! It's too good to be true."

Sony: No official comment concerning dedicated servers for all PS4 games.

Response: "Of course they will, it's Sony!"

Why not? Facts not allowed?

Sure, go find me a multiplayer game that runs better without dedicated servers.

Right, we don't know but you said it was clear that Xbox will be better. That was my point. We don't know.

The hardware specs of the consoles themselves are pretty well known and that is what the conclusion that the PS4 is more powerful was based on.

Both might be wrong but I'm just saying, it's not the same like you said.

Apparently Ubisoft gave Sony an extra hour of content for Watch Dogs, and EA gave MS features for some games that will never be on any other platform because they're desperate for parity. It's all about the ching-a-ling.

Bwahaha right, just mention an arbitrary number. It is just common sense. We know it from CoD and BF4. No developer will develop two different network systems for their games if they can avoid it. It costs money to develop two different systems. It costs money to maintain them. It will cost additional money everytime you want to update the system. It is an additional source for errors. This is just nonsense. It won't happen.

Doesn't really matter how you slice it. Either way it translates to "You must have an internet connection to play this game". Not the future I really want.

You sounded so sure of yourself and your "facts". I assumed you had the whitneyhoustonshowmethereceipts.gif.

You seem to be deep in the realm of guessing. Unless you have a source?

Are you questioning how Azure works? Because he's right. That's how Azure works.

Oh cool... so the cloud isn't finite, it's... INFINITE?

Did you even read the part where I said it is soft-DRM? That has nothing to do with allocation and everything to do with MS flipping a switch when they want you to buy the NEXT game they want you to buy.

Games as a service. Cloud computing.

Ahem... D-R-M ?

Incredible.

Microsoft: "We will have dedicated severs for every Xbox One game"

Response: "But there must be a catch! It's too good to be true."

What the fuck are you even talking about. First, I did not say this. I said this is not as big as some people her say it is ("game changer"), because third party devs will have dedicated servers on both platforms.

Sony: No official comment concerning dedicated servers for all PS4 games.

Response: "Of course they will, it's Sony!"

Again, this has nothing to do with Sony but with EA, Activision etc.

Sure, go find me a multiplayer game that runs better without dedicated servers.

I never said anything like that. This was never up for debate.

Albert just posted this in another thread. Should probably be in the OP too.:
http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=86164933

Also to be clear. One of the benefits of publishing games on Xbox One – ALL game developers get Dedicated Servers, Cloud Processing, and “storage” (for save games) free.

If you want to do dedicated servers on other platforms, you have to prop them yourself. But on Xbox One, while developers can choose to use their own methods, we make it available to everyone.

There should be no confusion on this point. We do not charge developers for Dedicated Servers.

This guarantees my Gold subscription renewal is gonna happen when I get an Xbox One.

What? These are completely different things. MS can't do anything about Xbone's specs anymore. Sony can still do something about lack of dedicated servers.

Right, we don't know but you said it was clear that Xbox will be better. That was my point. We don't know.

The PS4 is out what a month today. Sony has nothing. They may have in the future but they have never even hinted at anything other than streaming.

They are practically incapable of matching MS in this area.

Even Driveclub has dedicated servers.

Loads of games have

"dedicated servers"

As a gamer it depends on what the dedicated servers are being used for.
Personally I don't really care if Driveclub has servers dedicated to dealing with community posts, photo/video uploads and leaderboards.

Dedicated servers for users to race on is an entirely different Kettle of fish and this has not been confirmed.

Dedicated servers are becoming this gen's "1080p", being thrown around during interviews when in reality it can mean one of like 5 different things, only 1 of which is of real benefit to people playing online.

It was at first but when I go into a thread looking for info and have to sift through piles of shit like "h4v3 U s33n T1tAnF4LL!!1?!1 LOL!!!1!!" it gets to the point I'd rather head over to IGN's forums to get any semblance of gaming info.

Yikes! Gaf has some rough edges but surely you jest.

Sony has nothing? You mean Sony has said nothing.

And again, what are you basing this on? Practically incapable of matching what? You don't know what either of them will do.
