He can't run for president, he is not an American by birth. While it is a kind of silly law, people should be glad it exists in cruze's case.

It isn't silly at all. Why would any other country want someone that is an American running their country for instance?

Because if they don't want them running the country, they don't have to vote for them? But if he/she is the most qualified person for the job that's what should matter?

Just because a guy didn't flop out of his mom in an American hospital doesn't mean the person is incapable of being a great president. As long as they are a citizen, why does the other part matter?

But again, for cruse the law is a blessing.

Cruz was an American at birth, as entitled by his mother's US citizenship. He can be President.

There's a reason that qualification is necessary.

We are not a country that should allow someone who is born to American parents and never lived in America to be a president. That's not something that makes any sense. How can someone who doesn't live in the country run the country?

You can be born outside the country to American parents you just need to live INSIDE America for long enough.

He was born in Canada. Whether or not he can run depends on how you interpret the natural born citizen clause and what they means for citizens by birth in the Constitution. Some Constitutional lawyers would define that if you are a citizen by birth (as Cruz is under the guidelines set by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952) you are indeed a natural-born citizen and thus eligible to run, whereas others say you have to be born in the U.S. or in U.S. governed territories to be considered natural born.

You lost me. I never said anything about people not living in america. I said the law was silly that restricted american citizens from being president just because they weren't born there. People who immigrate, for instance. Divine right of birth requirements is medieval nonsense. Elect the right american to be president regardless of where they came from, as long as they are citizens when they run.

And if people don't like their former foreignness they can protest with their vote.
 
So what are the odds this will be sorted by the deadline? Last night I would have said 60/40 and then I wake up to today's mess with the do nothing GOP. Now I just don't know anymore.

I would be optimistic.

A deal is there, it just has to clear all of the various procedural hoops in Congress. (I.E. Survive a vote in both houses without the Tea Party hijacking it)

Just wanted to point out something, the bill to pass the budget and the bill to raise the debt limit are two separate things. The debt limit bill has to be on its own due to House Resolution 12:
Amending the Rules of the House of Representatives to require that any
extension of the public debt limit only be considered in a standalone
bill.

and anyway, if a non-natural born citizen can be a senator, rep or governor, why can't they be president? Seems like a pretty antiquated rule.
