NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

.

2 sketchbook pages from today. I went over the 2nd one a bit in Photoshop... Was trying out a new pencil, the lead was sooo crumbly. Almost charcoal like, very messy.

Still no access to a scanner, sorry. :S

I wanna draw something but I suck. Did you guys just know how to draw or did you practice everyday until you were great?

Some of us practice every day for 20 years and are still not really where we want to be (like me lol), but yeah! Everyone has a different learning curve, but generally, it takes lot and lot of practice and observation and actively working toward a goal.

Even if you know what to do and how you want something to look like, you have to train your hands to make the lines you want.

If you want to start drawing, just do it! Sucky or not right now, if you keep at it, you will get better. I would also suggest to keep all your old drawings because even if they are awful and embarrassing, it will be sweet to look back on in 2-10 years. You also start practicing from tutorials or books, but if that's too boring and you wanna go straight into something, I wouldn't discourage you really. Just know that starting from some kind of foundation of being able to draw geometric shapes and basic contours and shading will always help you in the long run.

Just keep trying. Over and over and over again. Know when to stop when you're spinning your wheels and going no where. Then start again. Rinse and repeat.

Look at others peoples work, read lots of theory and practice the basics. Even if you feel like none of it is going in, just keep at it because it will appear at some point.

Then even after all that you won't be happy with anything you produce.

I'd echo what everyone else says, BUT I would add study. Study hard everyday. Draw from life, practice your values, your perspective and all that. There's loads of resources online that can help explain how to understand these things better as well. But of course, the only true way is to draw all the time.

I have been drawing but again, not stuff that's all that suitable to post on here I don't think. I started taking Halloween themed commissions (thought it would be pretty fun to dress up other peoples characters in cheesy costumes cause why not),

So the idea is people give me whatever character, a small description, and I draw them in a random costume. This was the first one today, which was of a girl who enjoyed fairy tales. It was only fitting I made her a fairy godmother.

4 hours total. I was hoping to get them done within 2 hours , but it took about 3 for the line work, and an extra hour for the flat colours.

I love this sort of work but can never pull it off to my satisfaction.

So glad FiRez gave me shit for using line too much. I am having much more fun now treating my drawing like a sculpt.

Hahaha, no problem, glad to know that. Btw that's how painting feels for me too.

I became aware of the significant improvement in your latest portrait before looking at the spoiler, the rendering of the skin looks better than your previous ones. Keep going!

The screenshot capture function for some reason turned this sketch very blurry.

Thanks man. It is a bit tricky, and i still feel like my line weights are a bit too similar all-round. But as I had a good friend once tell me, fake it till you make it.

Second one done. This took waaay to long for my liking, and there's still a few mistakes here and there but. It's done. I wish I just did them as line works though...they all look way better as line work...

Drew these this week, then dicked around with a gel pen/marker.

Man that looks awesome!

Thanks, tours look great too.

From my new days old Instagram account, just been posting sketches daily at rodneyssss :)

Nice drawings guys, I wish I could get into drawing as I do into painting even when I do sketches I treat them like paintings, it's really hard for me to convey form using lines alone.

Oh well... I hope this iteration is a bit better.

I will start posting this progression and some others that I still have laying around on my tumblr:

Day 50! Quick fanart of the Lumberjack from Don't Starve. Just started playing this game, it's really fun.

This one specifically reminded me of Connie Springer from Attack on Titan

Nice drawings as always! Keep it up!

Thanks! And I have never watched AoT... though I feel like I should at some point, people keep raving about it everywhere. :P

Really digging the style of these commissions. Everything from the tinted lineart to the pale coloring... looking forward to seeing more of 'em. :)

Day 33

Quick painting I did last night, nothing special.

He looks he's going to be happy to impale himself with the axe haha
And yes the game is fun!...Just don't die too much lol

AoT is a good anime, you should give it a chance, I need someone to spam AoT vids too lol

Thanks, tours look great too.

I suppose it's because I've started just with pencil and paper maybe? Haha, anyway, i do enjoy your paintings, its great to see the process over time.

you should be charging way more for these. lovely work.
Haha, perhaps next year. I was a bit weary on the pricing side as people usually opt for my traditional work, and my digital stuff doesn't get as much attention.

So I didn't get to finish this yesterday, so had to finish it up this morning.

Still have a good few left to do. Need to get back on track with my timing and speed though. One thing I miss about america is how celebrated Halloween is for sure. And candy apples :CCCCC

To close the week, Babs!

Limiting myself to sketch in paper and pencils, but recently added the stupid gel/marker to line em - need to stop winging it tho. After I'm done, i'm always fighting the urge to import it to photoshop and fix things.

I guess it's good method for me to see my mistakes and take note.

Getting back into drawing after a long hiatus, this is my first muck around in painter.
Following the amazing work in this thread has inspired me to give it a go.

Thought I wouldn't get this done within the day but here it is :

The character the person gave me basically screamed Dracula. SO. It happened. Only 2 more left to go. Again spent too long on this, at least like 8 with half of it being really really frustrated. Need less self pity and more focus tomorrow.

can peeps help EmptySpace out?

there's a wacom bamboo capture (new) selling for $39 @ ebay, and there's the just-released, newer wacom intuos that costs $79 which one to buy? EmptySpace fears that the older bamboo tablet won't be a good investment and that somehow the rebranded small intuos tablet is better at something. there's also a used wacom bamboo capture pen and touch currently at $0.99 bid.

EmptySpace is also a total beginner when it comes to drawing using computers, so there's that.
