Idiotic white knights like this give a bad rap to actual feminists. This is making my head spin. I can't have a discussion with a person who doesn't have enough conviction in his beliefs to form logical thoughts or arguments. Others in this thread like Stet and Shanshan at least give sound arguments, even though I don't agree with them.

Look, if you have had experience with stuff like this and don't want to share anything with us, that is completely cool and understandable. But there are people on both sides of the argument in this thread who are....trying to argue. Unless you want to get involved in a way that isn't insulting people, which is understandable based on what you or someone you know might have experienced, then please stop. You're not arguing, you're insulting.

We all occasionally make choices in life that require being weighed. Choices that have no "right" answer, but rather a "best" answer depending on the values and beliefs of the individual. That was the case here when these women were presented with an opportunity to raise $20 for breast cancer research and awareness by allowing a youtube guy to motorboat their breasts. Some women undoubtedly said "no thanks", because they found it to be too sexually exploitative, rude, distasteful, embarrassing, or whatever their personal rationale was...but we're unsure how many women said no because that footage wasn't shown. The women who said "yes" ran the pros and cons quickly through their thought process before determining that overall it was worth going through with the motorboat for a $20 donation.

For those that said "no thanks" we should respect their decision. For those girls who agreed to being motorboated, it would be rude and presumptuous to assume they weren't capable of making a decision by assuming these guys coerced them to consent using the facade of a noble cause. These girls weren't drunk from what I could tell, so they were in a proper state of mind to make their own dang decisions. As such, if what was being requested didn't cross their personal line of decency, then they consented.


Are they guaranteed to never regret it? Of course not, some of those girls may regret a tattoo they got, but on the flip side some girls who said "no thanks" may have watched the video and thought "aw man I wish now that I had participated to get that running total higher". It can go both ways!

Yep, I was wrong as hell and im sorry if my support of this assholes offended some people in this thread, this is just a callous attempt to get hits and while I found this method initially okay I could see why it could be problematic to some. The fact that this guys don't see it and try to infantilize the opposing views by essentially saying "People with Cancer shouldn't have morals, just accept our money" shows a complete lack of respect towards survivors, and putting part of blEme towards a "minority" is just them being complete coward little worms and not outright blaming some women.

How does that even happen anyway? It's like they don't care that they are basically shitting on everything feminism is about. They preach equal rights for women, but any time a woman uses those rights to do something they don't personally agree with they treat them like people who need their help, are victims, or are unable to make their own decisions, like children. Do they not realize the irony?

Sorry, but these women don't need help from people like ClasslessPenguin, and even using words like harassment, blackmail, etc. in this situation makes them and their cause look fucking stupid and just cheapens the meaning of the words. Don't like what these guys are doing?...fine. Think it's in poor taste?...fine. But tossing around harassment and blackmail in regards to this just puts you in a special category of ridiculous as far as I'm concerned.

Shouldn't be too hard to figure out that the ploy isn't charity so much as these clowns motorboating and getting hits. I already mentioned this. Not quite sure where the disconnect is unless you're being willfully obtuse.
 
Breast cancer awareness campaigns are often super racy. The 'tasteless' argument doesn't fly here, unless you similarly denounce all awareness campaigns as base and tasteless, for appealing to males in a similar way.

There was the 'fondling breasts of AIDS' campaign, the 'check out my breasts' website, the painted nude model campaign done by the BCF.. the list goes on.

'Tasteless' in this case just doesn't do enough to discount this. The 'blackmail' argument is just trolling.

that type of rhetoric seems like it's conditioning women to be more fragile and vulnerable. it removes agency and power from women.

Simply pickup instantly assumes that the foundation refused the cash due outside pressure despite the cancer ONG previously saying this was an independent choice, partly made by the guys namedropping them without their authorization, essentially making profit using someone else's name. They simply can't fathom that a non-profit has guidelines and should just straight up accept cash no matter the source. This puts the weight of the responsibility to the center and that obscure "minority" and none of it to themselves, the fact that they can't even perciebe how someone might find this wrong is absurd and disrespectful.

But why do you care? The women in the video knew the deal and were fine with it. Women aren't delicate snowflakes that need to be protected, and they can make decisions for themselves.

Honestly if I was a woman I'd be more offended by all the white knights.

I'm asking you how does this project to "cancer patients shouldn't have morals, take our money"?
We completely understand their decision. It's very obvious that the BCRF is refunding the money due to pressure from a minority of people who find the video offensive. We will donate this money (and any additional money in the future) to another charity that funds breast cancer research and awareness.

I similarly denounce all awareness campaigns as "base and tasteless", who's way of getting attention is to objectify a human being's body part. This constant objectification has very real world negative implications (which many in this thread don't experience themselves, or even sympathize with apparently) for half of the world's population. That people misconstrue people arguing against this objectification with being prudes or anti-sex, is also "base and tasteless". At least the foundation, who deals with the issue every day, recognizes this objectification, and has denied the money.

Because as the foundation statement said they "serve the community", its not that hard to imagine that they interact with cancer survivors and probably have a good chunk of them collaborating with the company, its not a big leap to consider they have a pulse on the community and their views are strongly aligned with their's.

Objectification must stop, just because the morons in that video consented (the blackmailed ones turned their face the other way) doesn't mean they can get away with it.

I've been trying to convince myself that my original opinion was wrong, and that there is indeed something uniquely bad about this, but I'm not sure I can.

Basically, what's happening here is one side (simple pickup) is asking another side (women in the video) to agree to undergo an unpleasant experience in exchange for a reward (knowing they were responsible for a $20 donation to cancer research). In the process one side (simple pickup) is rewarded, as well as many viewers on youtube, like most of the male posters in this thread.

Thinking of similar practices that are considered acceptable, I tried making a comparison to reality TV shows like Survivor or Fear Factor. The agreement between the show or network and the contestants is almost the same: they are asked to undergo unpleasant experiences in exchange for a reward. In the process the show/network are rewarded by getting higher ratings, and viewers at home are rewarded by being entertained.

The biggest difference is that in the case of reality TV the reward goes to the individual, whereas in this case the reward goes to a third party. This seems to be where the problem arises. If the producers of Fear Factor were handing out a million dollar check at the end, not to the winners of the competition, but rather to orphanages or homes for the poor, the show/network would be called out by the public for being manipulative.

But the producers of the show could argue that the only reason they had the money to make this donation was because of increased ad revenue due to higher ratings from broadcasting the show in the first place. Since this is technically true, I'm at an impasse.

BCRF made $43,000,000 last year alone through donations.

How many of those other donations did you hear about?
 
I don't see the big deal. It was consentual, the women seem to have enjoyed themselves and so did the guys. It also gave awarness to breast cancer and their channel. It's a win overall.

People complaining about objectification are pretty funny since breast cancer foundations benefit from this greatly. There's a reason they receive a lot more donations and attention than any other cancer foundation.

That this particular foundation does NOT want to be associated with what they did should tell you all you need to know. A little sympathy for the opinions of women in this thread (and elsewhere) who are the constant victims of stranger harassment and objectification... would take our society a loooong way.

They raised 2k for charity, and everyone involved had fun and had a stoopid grin on their faces.

Good on those guys, wish I'd thought about it first. I really do not care what anyone thinks about that, I'm so past taking the reactions seriously anymore.
